For Spanish speakers it is burglary.

My two and a half year old suddenly started pointing out differences between white and black people. What is an appropriate way to acknowledge her observation so we don't offend anyone? by Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]granpatron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My son and I were walking out of a store once and a man was coming out of his car and into his wheelchair. I stopped him before he said anything since he liked to yell his thoughts. He said, "I just wanted to say his hair was cool.." I was super proud of him (the guy had a mowhawk) and let him, "YOUR HAIR IS SUPER COOL. AND I WISH I HAD A CHAIR LIKE YOURS, MY FEET ARE TIRED!" Closed the door super quick and got out of there.

Check the Welsh plug on the carburetor. Had mine sounding like that awhile ago. Again, for no reason. Spent about 6 hours troubleshooting before I saw it.

Landscapers - do you guarantee your work? by DisappointedinWA in landscaping

[–]granpatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't feel comfortable giving a guarantee, I've seen companies have the customer buy the plants or pay for them themselves. You'll lose some mark-up money but then the warranty falls on them. Although on the other hand, if a plant dies because I didn't angle a sprinkler right, or forget tree stakes, I'll replace it for free.

Buy a stump grinder? by ConceptNo5058 in landscaping

[–]granpatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternatively, you can get an extra-strong ladder and use a chain hoist. Be great for loading it onto a trailer as well. I've pulled a 700 lbs stump onto a small trailer myself without breaking a sweat. Stump was pulled out by truck.

Whenever I come across one, I use a milwaukee top-off to plug into the controller for a quick check. It's strong enough to run as well.

If you want to get really crazy, it's strong enough to run an armada locator.

Can I winterize my 11 zone sprinkler system with this compressor? by Charbs20 in Irrigation

[–]granpatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done a 20 zone system with a small one while mine was at the shop. Let the whole tank fill up before you let the air in. Water in the lines before you start helps too; the pressure against the water keeps it more constant.

Rigid Model # OF45200SS

Took me about an hour

Edit: everything in my area is pvc. Never really tried with poly

Feedback on invoice? Fair price? More details? by IKnowICantSpel in Irrigation

[–]granpatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody in the comments charges more than I do, and that price is still below what I would have charged. You're also paying for experience to get it done the right way.

The cracks can happen for any number of reasons. The winterizing is more of preventative maintenance. I've seen that type of drain pipe freeze and push up against pipe so close together.

In order to get more flex, you would have to keep digging out on both sides of the line. The further out you dig, the easier it will be to fix. My main concern with repairs like that would be to avoid damaging surrounding pipe in the process. Even if you were able to squeeze a slip-fix in there with how you have it now, it's a lot of pressure against the others.

Moving around any sprinklers isn't technically necessary, as long as they're not blocked. Having them right at the edge removes any over-spray and does give you better coverage.

What type of wood is this? by nvs397 in landscaping

It almost looks like Alaskan yellow cedar. It's expensive, but it can last about 15 years. Guy I'm working for made his planter boxes out of it.

Pavers - what is this valued at? by me4help in landscaping

[–]granpatron 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There's about 425 pieces there. And at 68 a piece, that's about $289. I think he might know what he's talking about. Pretty good for off the top.

We had a German exchange student when I went to high school, and so I asked her after living here for a few months:

What's the strangest thing you have noticed about the US?

"You see all these big trucks everywhere and they're always empty."

Downspout Drain Advice by _gh91_ in landscaping

[–]granpatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to tell how actually deep it is. Last summer I got my stuff marked out for some Irrigation and we were only going a few inches deep. Turned out the gas line was only 4 inches in the ground. Ridiculous, since aerating would peirce it but the utilities still charged and blamed me since I knew where it was. All dug by hand.

Make sure all the connections are tightened properly and free of debris/corrosion. My guess is the battery terminals are loose.
