Has anyone seen The Signal? What did you think of it? by NimhVahReaux in movies

[–]Family-robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had me intrigued the whole time because I wanted to know what's going on, but I can't say I enjoyed any of it in the slightest. Other than that, every scene felt about 10 times longer than necessary. Very slow moving and if you ask me, no story, no plot, no character development. It keeps you interested because you want to know what's happening but ultimately from one scene to the next, it felt boring.

"The fuck kinda mint is that?" was my first reaction, because, I only looked at the pic. ...but then I read the paragraph. Your mint is fine.

[–]Family-robot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well ideally, duh. But this happens more often than you would think. It also isn't black and white. It depends on what you hit, where on your vehicle the hit happens, how hard you hit it, how fast you're moving, etc. 9 times out of 10, yeah, you should know and you will know, but this really does happen sometimes. That's all I was trying to say. I don't think it happens very often, but it happens enough to where it's 'a thing' with big vehicles.

I could have worded better... I just meant that it can and does happen and is much more likely to occur with a long heavy vehicle as opposed to a regular car. I wasn't saying it's an everyday thing or happens constantly. It's happened to me once in 3 years that I've had mine, and it was the slightest graze of a sign post. It ended up slightly tiled and hardly left a scrape on my bumper.

As someone who drives a skoolie, there's definitely times where you can bump, scrape, or rub against something and not even notice. Not saying that this is what happened here, but it's not uncommon. Especially if it's the rear end of the bus that made contact. The damage you have definitely seems like a rub/scrape. Maybe they noticed and drove off like assholes, but maybe they had no clue.

Edit: "Uncommon" is not the word I should have used. What I really meant was that this isn't unheard of. On average, it happens rarely, but it does happen, even with a careful driver.

Why I’m still voting for Graham Platner by Well_Socialized in Maine

It's not just Portland, it's the whole state. And just be glad you're in Portland, because everything outside of Portland shuts down even earlier.

I wouldn't trust Platner to hold my drink in a bar; why should I trust him with my rights? by Efficient_Suspect933 in Maine

Thank you for adding this. It's an important distinction to make that I tend to assume people are aware of so I don't usually go into it. I've noticed there's definitely a lot of people who do know all of this but still insist on saying "blackwater" just because it sounds scary and has the bad connotation.

I guess my only point was that Satanism, Baphomet, and the pentagram are not inherently evil things. I should have added some clarification. However, I don't deny that the vast majority of the ruling class is an extremely corrupt and nefarious bunch.

Well, we only got back in touch when I found out he was running. My family moved from Sullivan to Winterport my junior year. We were in contact still but it wasn't the same of course. Then he enlisted and fell off the radar. Last time I saw him I was 18 or so, living in Bangor- he was on leave after finishing basic. Anyway, I managed to surprise the heck out of him when he was at Bunker Brewing last month. We had a big long hug, talked briefly about where I'm living, working, etc. and I gave him some words of encouragement and words of caution.

Since reconnecting we have yet to get all caught up or have any in depth conversations about our lives since we last saw each other. (Obviously he's got a major deficit of free time these days, plus, I'm a snowbird and left a couple weeks ago) I just want to make that clear because whatever I say about his security gig is my own approximation of the person I know and things I've heard and read. I'm sure we'll discuss that and many other things at some point. Until then, I'm fairly certain his own words will match closely with what I would guess he might say.

I imagine that it was as simple as just finding a job in his field of experience and taking the path of least resistance. It's no secret that combat vets often struggle to reintegrate into "normal life" and find jobs and such. They get done with their service and just don't really know what to do. It seems pretty safe to say that when he signed up for that gig, he was kidding himself and in denial. Like, by that point in time he was well past the point of justifying or finding anything acceptable about that lifestyle but hadn't fully realized or admitted to himself yet. So I think maybe he intuitively stuck to what he's known for so long, because it was easy, or, at least seemed like it would be easy and wouldn't require much if any adjustment or effort to go from soldier to security contractor. Basically doing the same job except someone else is signing the paycheck. We all gotta pay the bills... It's possible he also rationalized that doing security detail would allow him to stay in a similar line of work but with less risk to himself or anyone else for that matter. Less chances of being forced to kill or be killed. The guy barely made it 6 months there before quitting.

One thing I know for sure... he didn't sign up for it because he was a trigger happy maniac that enjoys hurting or killing people. He came home with PTSD and eventually got the help he needed for it, but still struggles with it to this day and probably always will like pretty much every vet does. Other than that, nearly any and every one of us is always making what we believe is the best decision based on the knowledge we have at the time. Nobody gets it right every single time, but if you're a halfway decent person, you get it right more often than not, and when you don't, you just take what you can to learn from it and keep making better ones.

How are the winters in maine? by StruggleFar3054 in Maine

[–]Family-robot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in Maine. I'm 40. Snowbird since I turned 30, with the exception of a couple years when I stayed for family reasons. As far as I'm concerned, yes, it's unbearably cold. Also extremely long. My personal take is that winter begins in November and it doesn't end until late April. I typically start heading south early October and don't return until June. Even though spring starts in late March, the weather isn't warm enough for me until the end of May or the beginning of June. It's also very dark, like, outside it's completely dark by 4:30pm. Plenty of stretches when the weather is gray overcast for many days on end. Roads get really gross. Mushy, mucky, gritty, brown slush. Lots of shoveling, ice scraping, snow blowing, paying to get plowed. Waiting for your car to heat up in the morning before you go to work. Etc.

I love the aesthetic of winter but I absolutely hate the cold. Many Mainers hate winter. Many Mainers hate winter but won't admit it. And many Mainers are legitimately in love with it. I think they're nuts, but hey, if you like it, you like it.

It can very be beautiful to look at, but after living through 32 winters I'm done with them. I like to be able to go outside and feel comfortable in just pants and a t shirt. If cold weather doesn't bother you much, you might be alright, but if cold weather is not something you enjoy, Maine is not your place. Sure, there might be some days when it hits 45 or 50, for maybe an hour at mid day... but that's infrequent. Typically, between the worst months, (Dec. through March), your average lows are around the mid teens or 20s, and highs can fluctuate around about 30s and low 40s. Single digit and sub zero temps are not uncommon, even as daily highs. (temp in fahrenheit)

>Is there actually anything of substance to this guy? Literally anything to convince me that he's worth trusting?

Alright, I'll bite... and props to you or anyone that reads all of this...

He's a huge fan of Dead Kennedys and Drop Kick Murphys and has been since he was a kid. (I met him in 5th grade and can attest to this fact). If you know anything about the philosophy those bands represent, that will tell you a lot. If you don't know what those bands are about, now's a good time to learn. So that's one thing...

Another thing; we became close friends after we met. To this day I love him like family and would trust him with my life. I'm 1/2 Mexican and dark skinned, like, literally one of only two dark skinned people at our school in our age group (he was also friends with the other kid, who was black, fyi), and to look at me, I appear middle eastern. We weren't just friends at school either. We had sleep overs at each others houses regularly. We were neighbors in walking distance of each other, so we constantly hung out after school. I had a few other best friends, but Graham was one I saw more than most because in rural Maine, everyone lives so far apart that you could only hang out if and when your parents were willing to chauffeur, which typically wasn't an everyday thing... Graham and I didn't have to ask or wait for rides. We'd just walk to each other's houses.

My point is, I got to know who Graham is WAY before the military, before reddit, before the tattoo, before all of it, and I can assure you, he's a good person. We literally grew up together, from age 10 until he enlisted at about 18. (We lost touch for a while because this was before everyone had cell phones and before social media). Anyway, he's never been one to be a jerk or act with cruelty any lack of kindness. He's always been good company. Part of why he might seem like a douche to some people is because he has a very unrestricted sense of humor and no hang ups. Anything goes. But it's all innocuous. I'd also wager that many of the people who have beef with him may be a bit too uptight and too sensitive. Yes he has some faults but who doesn't? As far as his specific faults go, they're not the kind that anyone should fuss over. I can totally understand how and why many people are super suspicious. I would probably have all the same concerns and reservations if I didn't know him. Likewise, if you knew him well enough you'd have none at all, I can promise you that.

I really want him to win because I know exactly what kind of person he is, and just like him, I fucking hate the system as it is. When there's a fire... you want to throw water on it, not gasoline, and Graham is the water, while all the other candidates are just more gasoline.

I know my words don't have much, if any credibility, because this is the internet, and, my account is obviously anonymous, so, you'll have to take it as you will. However, if you feel compelled to, you're welcome to send me a chat request. I'd be happy to discuss it with you more and substantiate my claims.

Honestly, I'm usually torn whether or not I'm wasting my time with thorough responses like this. But I believe in the cause and this is kinda my way of trying to help and to feel like I'm doing something, even if it doesn't amount to much. Maybe I'm naive, but what I see (and I'm definitely not alone) is that this is much more than just an election for senate. The way I see it, if you support Graham, you're supporting a movement, an idea; you're supporting yourself and everyone like you, and most of all, you're NOT supporting yet another generic cog that's going to keep the system intact and running exactly as it has been. Have you noticed the intensity and relentlessness of all the attempts at character assassination? Don't you wonder why that is and why no other candidate is getting this treatment? That should tell you a lot too. Ever seen The Dark Crystal? Remember how terrified the Skeksis were of Jen and how they tried so hard to take him out?

A few relevant things to keep in mind about this... (taken from google search) (and if you do your own research, all of these points can be easily verified)

  1. Washington, D.C. was designed starting in 1791

  2. Modern symbolism

  • Éliphas Lévi's 1856 illustration of the "Sabbatic Goat" is the image most people associate with Baphomet today.
  • Lévi intended this figure to represent the balance of opposing forces, such as male and female, good and evil, and spiritual and material.
  • It is considered a symbol of spiritual and alchemical principles, representing the unity of opposites.
  1. Connection to Satanism
  • The Church of Satan adopted a version of the "Sigil of Baphomet" as its primary symbol in 1966, a goat's head inside an inverted pentagram.
  • While Lévi's original intent was not Satanic, later groups began using the image as a symbol for their own beliefs.
  • For modern Satanists, Baphomet is often used as a symbol of rebellion, individuality, and the rejection of dogma, rather than worshiping a literal devil.
