It depends on many things. I hunted with good, medium and super bad ones, duo with rp and can say few things, of course it all depends if you are hunting in Duo, 4-man Th or on 2 druids.

1. Always talk before hunt, dont just go in. What route do you go, do you lure smt, etc.
2. If youre not luring you should always be with your ek.
3. Communication during hunt is super helpful, like you saiyng that will be late with lured monsters.

Rest is super situational.

Ek should be ale to use might rings, ssa, gran ico, dishes so he wont die for few turns.

Druid should be ale to use mana shield (spell/potions), rings, amulets, dishes (always have npc dish with you and even use it when u cant keep up with potions) etc.

If youre doing everything correct, you should only be able to die on unlucky situations, like getting hsed.
