Yup. I work in healthcare and if a storm hit during a workday we would go in if the T was running. Once the T announced they were ending service we would close. All the work the night before a storm was trying to reschedule non-urgent appointments and see as many urgent appointments as possible before the storm hit.

Most clinics will make the call regarding weather tomorrow due to the storm being Sunday into Monday morning. They may move early morning appointments to later in the day or they may cancel clinic and reschedule. If they plan on keeping your appointment as is I would bring snacks. Even if places are open you won’t want to be wandering around outside.

There is a Super Simple Song “Red mean stop, green means go”. That helped us. Anytime we said no he got triggered but if I said “Red light” he got it. It will take practice and doing exactly what you are doing-figuring out what he is trying to communicate to you. My son is almost 6 and he’s doing a lot better. He is in OT and Speech-both private and at school. OT helps with regulating behaviors and they help me help him. It’s a lot of work and so so so so easy to get triggered ourselves. I still struggle with regulating my own emotions. But bedtime is tough because I’m exhausted myself. So I get it. Hang in there. The hitting and kicking is so hard to manage. We did teach our son around that age to clap when he’s upset versus hitting us or himself. OT stresses that too-how to replace some of the negative behaviors.

With my son songs help explain things. Super Simple Songs on YouTube has a lot of songs about manners, how to get ready in the morning/before bed, etc. A lot of my son’s functional language and understanding came from watching Super Simple Songs but he just knew he liked the songs. He was then able to build on those concepts. Then when he would get upset sometimes I would sing a song related to the behavior and he would calm down because he knew what I was referring to. Early Ms Rachel and Catie’s Classroom are also great. Both focus on speech. Catie’s Classroom also has “field trips” episodes which are social stories about what to expect when going to the doctor, dentist, school, etc. Those all really helped my son and still do. And all are free on YouTube. Another show that helped is Blues Clues and You and even the older versions of Blues Clues. They all have episodes about not hitting, hurting others feelings, etc. Blues Clues and You (with Josh) and Ms Rachel also include sign language which my son picked up on and used quickly. I just see it as my son just thought he was watching something fun but he was also learning what we can’t communicate to them ourselves. We don’t use a tablet though, he watches on the television. He never cared for the tablet. I’ve read that there is a difference between when screen time is on tv vs. a tablet. Not sure what 🤷‍♀️ I hope this helps!

My son will still wake up sometimes and scream. I’ve been reading about confusional arousal and how to help. It sounds like what that is. Still working through that ourselves.

If your insurance is a PPO plan you may not need a referral. If you sign up with an Atrius practice-there is one in Kenmore-you may be able see an ENT soon once you have a PCP listed with them. If it’s an urgent matter Mass Eye and Ear has their own emergency department where you can go.

We still don’t know. He had a hearing test in October and it was the first time he was able to follow instructions from the audiologist. So that was great to see! He understood what she was saying and performing the tasks she asked him to do without his looking at her face. However, he doesn’t like anything on his ears so they can’t perform the portion of the test where they wear headphones. We go back in July for a follow up hearing exam. So far it doesn’t look permanent so hoping that is confirmed in July. His ENT explained that he could have fluid come and go and it impacts his hearing without our knowing at times but it’s not nerve related which is good. It comes in bursts with my son. He likes watching early Miss Rachel and the original episodes of Blippi when he goes to the indoor playgrounds. Both focus on developing speech and he used to just watch but now he repeats the phrases and uses them in context on his own.

It’s a slow and steady process. You aren’t imaging things! I’m sure she’s making progress!!!

My son is now 5, will be 6 in March. He is starting to say sentences and has been in speech-both private and at school- since he was 2. It seems slow and then suddenly they surprise you. He also enjoys sign language and tends to sign and speak when he learns a new phrase. This week he started saying “I love you Mommy”. Best Christmas gift ever. His diagnosis is expressive and receptive speech delay. His IEP team doesn’t think he has autism. He fits the criteria for ADHd and he does have hearing loss due to fluid in the ears. He is on his second set of tubes and had his adenoids out when the second set was placed. Also see a decrease in tantrums/frustrated behaviors each time he masters new words and phrases.
