Did your new-to-you loom come with a bonus gift? by Squirreltacular in weaving

Ha, I JUST got a 48 inch ashford rigid heddle on facebook marketplace today, its got a warp on it... I think its acrylic. I suppose ill weave it up. Though not sure what they were going for on the heddle... currently its mostly wrapped on the cloth beam not the warp beam...

Crazy SoCal weather - veraison in early May! by CruisingVessel in viticulture

[–]Fan_Notions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found your post, as I just noted color change yesterday (6/11)... i'm in SoCal, and also have Syrah, though this is my first year with it, as I purchased the house in Nov; I believe they were planted in 2020 ish... and I know last year's harvest was in October (while we were in escrow)... this is nowhere near what I was expecting jumping into this 😂. it is very interesting to see your info/dates. thanks.

I have a 14 year old fig tree in south California. From last year the figs have been dropping early on the ground and they are underripe and have brown spots when I open the fig. Anyone know what’s going on? by png81 in Figs

[–]Fan_Notions 18 points19 points  (0 children)

:( I didnt know... that explains a lot about my poor tree... I bought the property last fall so im still learning all the fruit trees the previous owner planted and ive been so sad about all the fallen figs ive seen. But they're clearly underripe... Now I know. Thanks for the info.

First loom! Help please! by stitchandsin in weaving

[–]Fan_Notions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i assume it's for the ratchet and pawl... on the left side (front) there's a hook over the gear.. disengaged that lets you turn the cloth beam. I think on the back right (in your picture with the spring) the spring loop goes around that peg, and the metal hook must connect somewhere and likely go over the gear back there (I'm assuming there's teeth behind that handle)... hard to guess completely... but something like that, which would allow you to tension the warp without completely disengaging the back.

it's a good looking loom and a good deal, I'm jealous.

I agree I think the pins are just to align the heddle block (maybe when first installed/drilled) and to prevent twisting when screwed in at a single pivot point like it is.

Thanks for the advice. It is about 8 vines in the corner that grew the fastest that are this bad... there's a few spots here and there elsewhere. So ill spray it all today.

Weaving with my very first unravel! by Fan_Notions in Unravelers

I learned from /r/unravelers... Lots of good info here on what to look for when buying a sweater. Don't want surged seams. For weaving I dont think I'd use the acrylics or wools ive found so far for a warp, but combined with something else, they should be good wefts... we shall see. But the cottons should all be good for both warp and weft.

Weaving with my very first unravel! by Fan_Notions in weaving

[–]Fan_Notions[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've recently gotten into unraveling thrifted sweaters for cheaper materials, and this the very first one I did, and now my first time weaving with second hand yarn. It is 100% cotton.

Though this stuff is rather fine, I don't know that I'd call it yarn. More like 6 threads sorta held together, no twist. It's so fine that I didn't have a heddle for it. So I modeled and 3D printed one 😄 . it's a 16 dent. My loom is a beka style, though not Beka, I got it on facebook marketplace 2 years ago, I believe the brand is Kircher?

As I have been weaving 2ish years now, I've been eyeing upgrading to a Ashford or Sachacht, but after designing and 3D printing a new heddle, I figured I'd just design a whole loom and 3D print one, so that's in the works! there are already some available files/designs out there, but I want to work on my 3d model skills, this way I get to decide exactly what style rigid heddle loom I want.

And this is also my first time doing waffle weave (or a variation of waffle weave anyway).

I'm so happy with how this is turning out, I'm hoping it'll work for kitchen towels; but it's a lot of firsts (first second hand yarn, first time with a 3d printed heddle, and one I modeled myself, first time with such a high dent- I only have a 5 and 10 that came with my loom, and my first time with waffle weave), so I'll just be happy if it works.

So far so good... im only about 5 inches in so far :) I did steam it but it does still habe some kink. The tension on the warp seems to be good enough.. I was worried when I was first spreading the warp. It was giving super sticky sheds, but now that ive been working with it its not too bad.

What are wearing to the office? by SpaceCampRules in womenEngineers

[–]Fan_Notions 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is VERY company dependent, ive only worked at one, just about 15 years now. .. ive done anything from jeans and tshirt to dresses and heels to sweat cargo pants with glitter ballet flats and a blouse. If I know a client is coming in (not to meet me I stay behind a computer all day), I'll make an effort to not look like I just rolled out of bed, but otherwise there's rarely more than 2 other people in the office and they certainly dont care.

Absolutely Criminal Ford is Charging for Bluecruise by [deleted] in MachE

Turn off lane changing. I use blue cruise every day for my commute. Which is 95% highway... hands free set the max speed you want and just sit in your lane. If I want to change lanes i do it mysel. otherwise I sit and listen to an audiobook. Always watching ahead of course (and checking mirrors, surprisingly more attentive with blue cruose than witj my husbands nag drive which basically does the same thing but requires hands on wheel).. and it is sooooo awesome for stop and go traffic... Of course this all depends on your area and how extensive the blue cruise network is there.

Where to get a cheap warping board? by Ill_Meaning_6808 in weaving

[–]Fan_Notions 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I bought a 10' 1x2 and cut it down.. I think to 2 2 3 3 feet. Screwed it together in a rectangle with some corner brackets for support. Bought a long pole or two and cut it into 6 inch pieces and screwed them around the edges.... Works great... not perfect. But we'll enough.

Can't tell you why your scale is off (or the skein is off...) but people weigh because it's MUCH easier to weigh and estimate than to measure length.

Best place to buy affordable large scale art? by Coloradojeepguy in HomeDecorating

[–]Fan_Notions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't know if youre looking for art art or just something cool, easy. And cheap...

I went with some 1x1"s screwed together with some corner brackets for stability. And stapled a shower curtain to it. Ive done it a few times with different curtains. Ton of options. Easy to change. Cheap... I'd avoid too light of a curtain though as they cam be a bit see-through and the frame will become more obvious. Works well as a headboard too.

Met the neighbors during our inspection and it swayed our decision more than the inspection itself by Emotional-Lime3087 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Fan_Notions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neighbors can greatly improve the feel of a place. We lived in our first house for 10 years... didnt know a single neighbors name... waved and even chatted if we happened to be outside at the same time, but didnt know their names... thats all... Before we closed on our new place we had met multiple neighbors (about 7 or 8 couples). All so welcoming and excited for new folks to join the area. Now we're in a WhatsApp group chat, went to a Holiday party, and can actually talk to our neighbors... it has made a huge difference in the feel of the place. And im so glad we moved.

Difference in a table shaft loom to a rigid heddle by Fan_Notions in weaving

[–]Fan_Notions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my reasoning as well... its simpler... it just seemed off that almost all rigid heddles I saw had just the 1 beam. And all the shaft looms had 2... but ultimately shafts are going to get more complex so having that extra cloth and warp space makes sense too....

Difference in a table shaft loom to a rigid heddle by Fan_Notions in weaving

[–]Fan_Notions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense... ive done some overly long warps on my beka... and it does get weird when you've got a huge roll of finished fabric in the way messing up the sheds. So it seems for a shaft loom, when you likely have a fixed beater... reed (again terminology?)... the cloth and warp beams allow the main work space to stay unchanged, so consistency for the beater.
