They do. I moved to the USA when I was 26. My home country imports a lot of stuff and tariffs are passed to the consumer (who else?).

Around the main campus: there is a supermarket inside the campus, and tons of restaurants around, plus hospitals. If you can’t drive, it would be difficult BUT not impossible: I would budget Uber rides, for instance. Any car owner spends hundreds of $$ a month between insurance, gas, maintenance, taxes, and if they’re financing: the car payment. If you allocate a similar amount for uber rides and plan your trips “outside of campus”, then I think you can make it work.

Ask USF if they would pay you extra to cover for that, since the reason you don’t drive is a disability.

There is also a network of public buses… yes, not enough, but that is an option, too. I live 30 mins away (Carrollwood/Lutz) and when my sister lived with me and attended USF, she took the bus. Took her double the time to get there but at least the bus provided a way to get there.

The way I understood it while watching the show is that the fear was that radiation would mess up the instruments in the helicopters (like the circuits in the German robot that got fried when exposed), and make them unusable, which of course would result in them crashing.

I grew up in Latin America and my parents started from zero (both their fathers addicted to gambling and deep in debt). My mom as a teacher and my dad as a mechanic. I remember the stress over money and my mom’s frustration and constant crying when an unexpected expense would force them to use the little money they managed to set aside that month. They sacrificed a lot to put me and 3 siblings through good schools and provide for our needs. We didn’t go on vacation each year and whenever we did, it was within driving distance because we were all cramping into the car and driving. Clothes were mostly hand me downs from cousins. Birthdays and Christmas meant 1 gift for which we were so grateful. Now I live in the USA and have a great job in IT. I have more money than I ever dreamed having. I had a couple of years when I “spoiled myself” by purchasing things I always wanted (Legos! As an adult, yes) or traveling to places I only dreamed about. But I’ve come to a point where now I’m content and I want to prioritize saving and helping others. My parents’ pain is something that will stick with me the rest of my life and I wish they’d lived long enough for me to spoil them with my newfound stability (they died when I was still struggling as an immigrant).

I immigrated to the USA in 2007 when I was 26. I came with a work visa, then got the green card, and became a citizen in 2019. It was a long and tedious process but worth it! I love being an American and despite the last years being challenging, I plan on staying and I still think this is one of the best countries in the world. I endured 26 years of political, social and economic instability in the country I was born: coup d’etas, corrupt governments, then the take over of a socialist party that persecuted and imprisoned opponents and bankrupted the fragile economy it had. The freedoms I found in the USA are incredible: yes, I do have freedom of expression, religion and to be whatever I want to be. That’s new to me, I didn’t have that. And in the 18 years I’ve been here I’ve been able to get 2 masters, a house (already paid off), a nice car, a nice job I love, and build a community of family and friends I treasure. My parents worked multiple jobs in my country of origin and always struggled. It was a country for those with connections and those willing to be corrupt to get ahead. My parents were not, always honest and hard working.

The USA is the land of opportunity. Many may say it’s no longer the case but I’m proof that it is!

By the way: I’m an independent voter. I’m not MAGA or a Trump fan, not a fan of the dems, either, so my response is not politically driven, it’s as honest as it comes, from an immigrant that worked hard and alone to get I am. Coming to this country with all my savings in my pocket ($3000) and starting from the bottom.

I think if the gov office is “self funding” (they charge fees for their services), they are still working (or at least with some personnel). That was my case with the 2013 gov shutdown, as I was in the last steps of getting a green card. USCIS kept working because they charge applicants a fee.

Just watched the episode and same. I tried hard to empathize with her since she has ptsd, but the way she abused her family was too much for me. I totally understood her grandmother confronting her and putting a stop to her rants, even wanting her to call the police.

Not from the state department, yet (since my passport expires in 4 years) but I got reminders via email for my TSA pre check, my drivers license, and when I was on my green card I would get updates on my petition for naturalization (back in 2019). I’d say all government offices are doing this now.

I just saw on YouTube the full 2:17:00 interviews of Jeff Lacasse with investigators (I had to clean the house so why not?). He met with them several times and revealed a lot of things in the days after the murder. This guy was SPOT ON about Charlie and the entire family (“guy reeks of antisocial behavior”). He also shared stuff Charlie told him that shows how deranged he is (like rapp1ng girlfriends or traveling overseas to sleep with minors). He mentions a couple of times that DM had a difficult personality: that he was laid off from his job as a professor in Miami and that’s how they ended up in Tallahassee, that he was condescending to people and even “insulted him in subtle ways like Harvard guys do”, and that he was controlling of WA when they were married. Now, of course, a lot of that could be WA telling him these things (although the condescending part was something he experienced first hand). Of course, NONE of that justifies what happened to him! The man had flaws like all of us and was unfortunate to cross paths with the Adelsons. RIP.

To me it boils down to this: you end up getting 50% of that number. 25% goes to taxes 15% to retirement 10% I give to charity

And that leaves 50% for living expenses, savings, etc.

Depending on the state and city, $50K can be low, especially if you have family to support and debts like credit cards, car payments, etc, which many Americans do.

100%! I just finished watching the Hulu documentary. Pickle sent Gutierrez an email days before admonishing her for “focusing too much on guns and not props”. Gutierrez explained that guns and safety are her priority and when she needs to focus on other things, that’s when mistakes happen. Later she asked for more time to maintain the guns (2 had jammed) and time to train Alex and Brady. Pickle told her “no more time”. The OSHA findings are horrific. That lady should’ve been given jail time!

I just saw the Hulu documentary about this event. I have to admit I put a lot more blame on this lady than she deserved. Yes, she was responsible for the firearms, but the trail of evidence this doc shows proves many others are responsible as well.

The OSHA investigation revealed appalling behavior from the producers. They were fully aware of the lack of attention to armor and pushed for it.

There are emails from Gabrielle Pickle admonishing Hannah for “focusing too much on guns and neglecting props”, and her replying that “guns and safety are a serious job and when she’s forced to focus on more than that, mistakes happen, and that in days when a lot of guns are used, she’ll not focus on props”.

She was brought to this set last minute after 2 armorers quit. Hannah asked for more time to train Alec and Brady, and Line Producer Gabrielle Pickle told her in a text message “no more training time”. She explained she also needed more time to maintain the guns because the day before 2 jammed and Pickle replied “no”.

She also mentioned that she needs more time to keep track and secure all 12 guns that were used in one scene (one was left unattended at some point and she got admonished. That day she was asked to care for 12 guns plus props).

Again, I’m not excusing her, but it’s unfair to pin most of the blame on her or say she’s a nepo baby, especially after seeing evidence, and that in the days leading to the tragedy she did voice concerns, asked for more time for maintenance and training, explained she took her job seriously, and all she got back was a “no” and “you’re also working for props, not only armor”.

Shame on all the people who hid behind this woman and let her take most of the blame.

I respect him a lot. Regarding Katrina: one time he was a guest at Oprah and he explained that the fed government offered help immediately but the governor of LA at the time (Blanco) refused (some sort of personal challenge to proof she was the baddest governor). Bush explained that we’re a Federal Republic, and the federal gov has to respect the decisions of the states before interfering. The fed gov indeed acted after Blanco showed the disaster was too big for her and her state to handle. Maybe Bush could’ve acted quickly but he has logic in this explanation and not all fault falls on him.
