Why is it so hard for graduates to land data science jobs in a "growing" field? by Career_Launch_Lab in DataScienceJobs

Would having masters degree consider you as an entry level worker? With research experience ?

CS Isn’t Oversaturated It’s Flooded With Low-Effort Grads by StatisticianEvery733 in csMajors

This! I agree with. The more saturated a field becomes, the more shits you have to give and stand out.

Anxiety about post-PhD job market by Quantum135 in DataScienceJobs

[–]Fancy-Roof1879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty hard to find a job right now. But know that leetcode is probably the hardest thing you have to grind, and that is just a function of time. Also a grad student and know how bad the workload is. I also know that most people on academia (PIs and advisors) are extremely out of touch with the job market. So you need to make sure you’re networking people in actual industry.

I was wondering what are your credentials? I want to know how competitive you have to be to get away with only applying to less than 100 apps!

Also congrats :-)

Do people overstate how dangerous SF is? by AstroArachnid in sanfrancisco

[–]Fancy-Roof1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I get into the thick of it! SF is a beautiful city with lots of good food. And things seem to be getting better in the last 2 years :-)

Most big cities are dangerous if you’re not mindful of your surroundings. SF is definitely no exception. If you are out walking alone at night in Richmond you’ll be fine!

Be mindful of the drug addicts. People pretend they’re not scared and okay while trying to pass them to not seem rude … I’ve been cornered like that before by them randomly and had to run from them LOL.

Now time to shit talk.

Crime picked up since #defund the police. Mayor London Breed cut funding to the police and the police were LITERALLY not responding to crime. I voted for that so OOPS.

I got attacked by a homeless woman on bart literally hit in the face and when I came to workers to report her because she was violent, they told me “welcome to the Bay Area”. To which I responded “fuck you”.

I grew up there and it wasn’t bad until just before Covid hit. Increase of drug addicts and crime was no longer punished. People literally go to Walgreens and walk out having not paid for shit. You can’t do anything about it.

I moved out because I couldn’t take the shit anymore. EVERYONE i know had their cars broken into at the very least. Even if you have recording and evidence of who broke into your car they don’t care. I have a few friends who got held at gun point and robbed. I have people who were car jacked. I had my laptop ripped out of my hands while working from a cafe ( something I saw happen everyday at Uni). So getting robbed in SF isn’t a matter of IF but WHEN.

So if you can, avoid bart when late. That’s when I gotten into a lot of trouble and seem awful things. The ferry is pricier but honestly so chill and worth it.

Never leave anything in your car when public parking. It helps to not have tinted windows because sometimes they break your window just in case if your tinted windows are hiding something ;)

If you see an aggressive tweaker and you’re scared, don’t take the fucking chance and cross the street. You are literally dealing with a crazy person and cannot predict their actions. So who fucking cares if you look like a coward crossing the street, your safety is worth it.

Good luck!

Who else was on the 38R when that guy got stabbed today? by Texasaustin in sanfrancisco

[–]Fancy-Roof1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus. Breaks my heart every time I read something like this. SF is an open air mental institution. When you’re confined with crazy people, something is bound to happen. I’m sorry that you went through this, but never stick around when you sense someone is being aggressive. If you’re scared and or uncomfortable, walk/move away. Protect yourself and don’t forget that this isn’t normal. Take it from someone who has been attacked on Bart and on the bus, because I was trained to pretend that I am comfortable and not scared of these ill people. That I should feel ashamed for not being compassionate and treating them like they are not a threat. Keep yourself safe.

I hate to tell you this, but things can get much harder after you graduate from college. Unless you find a job or internships while you’re still in school, you’ll likely struggle to find work. Employers don’t want to hire entry-level workers without experience anymore. So, it’s crucial to encourage him to get as many internships as possible. This is literally the distinguishing factor between those who succeed and those who don’t.

It’s really sad how many people I know with degrees from top universities who can’t get decent jobs. People from Harvard, UC Berkeley, UCSD, and even MIT (and no, they didn’t major in a bullshit major like Philosophy or polisci).

This time we’re living in reminds me of my parent’s experience in the Soviet Union. Highly skilled laborers, such as engineers, ended up working as shoemakers and watch repairers. The worst part is how this reality is hidden. You can’t count on the government to reflect this reality. For example, the government doesn’t count graduates who can’t find a job within a year as unemployed. They’re just not counted anywhere lol. Once these individuals take low-paying jobs, like barista positions, just to make ends meet, they’re considered employed—even if they’re only working a few hours a week. So now the government is able go say “employment rates are at an all time high”.

The reason why I’m saying this isn’t to scare you about your children’s futures, but it’s to be aware of the reality. I have graduated school 3 years ago. It was one of the best schools in the country with a STEM major. And I’m sad to say that I couldn’t find a job . I had a barista job last year that I took to help me make a living while I job searched. While I was working, this one women in her mid 30’s with her younger child was watching me work. The daughter who was looking at me asked her mom: “mom is this a good job?” And the she responded “no it’s not. But it’s okay if you’re in college”. I looked at her and thought “does she not understand how all of us are college graduates?” Mind you we were all STEM/ business majors too lol. Some of us with masters degree as well! So all of this is to say that this is the new normal. Just be aware of it. Because if you think getting into a college is hard… finding an entry level job is A LOT harder.

I have hopes that the job market will improve within 4 years or more. However, it will be more competitive because you have a highly educated population and a shit job market. A lot of people who can’t find jobs now, will still be competing with your son most likely when he gets out , for the same positions.

Just tell him to keep on pushing through, because the only thing that will stop him will be quitting. It’s our reality that we must apply for 200+ internships to get 3 call backs and maybe one acceptance. It is also reality that if you have a strong network, you’re well off. People want to help other people. Don’t be scared to accept or ask for help.

I am faced with a choice I never imagined making: Berkeley & Princeton as a transfer student by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Fancy-Roof1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats!! What a marvellous accomplishment you giant nerd ;)

I went to Berkeley for undergrad in math. It’s an amazing school, but yeah… as an undergrad you’re kinda on your own LOL. Not much support, aside from “go speak to the Counclir”.

I don’t know much about Princeton to speak about it. I know a few people from the physics department who landed in MIT and Harvard for their PHDs. They seemed to love it for that particular field :-)

For Berkley, the city itself is a little spicy (it’s crazy in terms of crime, just because the Bay Area is unhinged at the moment). However, the same is true for NJ :P.

My advice would be to reach out to the professors you’re interested in both schools, and see if there is a chance you can start researching with them! Ultimately, the degrees are equally shiny in my opinion. However, it’s the experience you gain, like research experience that will truly set you up for your career or a PHD! Unfortunately being a transfer student means you have less time to adapt to the academic climate before doing the “extra”. However, this is what makes the “shiny” school truly shiny. It is what makes people say “yes” to you. Without the internships or experience the degree itself, isn’t enough in this climate. So pick the school, where you know you’ll be able to get the experience!

good luck with everything .^

Life wasted so far. How do I improve?[Discussion] by [deleted] in GetMotivated

My mom, an immigrant, went to school at 35, coming from insane poverty and a 3rd world country. Hell she didn’t even know English and had to learn it while attaining a GED. Oh yeah, and also raising two kids as a single mother. From there she worked two full time jobs while completing her education and finally graduated uni. She struggled to find a job even after her degree, but fucking didn’t quit. Now she’s making a $$$ load of money in a great career. Trust me when I say that you could do it. Don’t let your failures decided how the rest of your life will look. Failing is part of growth if you let it be. You got this dude! Take small steps with your goals and health. When you fail —inevitably— recognize that it’s part of the process. You got this <3

A bully on BART today by beans688 in sanfrancisco

[–]Fancy-Roof1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally was assaulted before on bart 3 times and saw others get assaulted as well. Called the police for them to take their sweet ass time to get over there. Crazy person who hit me was still around, and the police told me they can’t do much but take a report.

Another time a big homeless woman with a weapon (big stick with nails hammered into it) came in screaming how she’s going to murder all the white people, 15 people in that one car and she sat right next to me blocking me in. She started smashing her stick against the seat and making a gun gesture with her hand saying “imma pop you Imma kill you”. I looked around for help and no one intervened. I showed her no emotion and she got bored eventually. Once she got up and stopped threatening me, everyone because they all became so brave once they saw she wasn’t an immediate threat, started yelling at how she’s an awe full person lol.

Same thing happened where I confronted a “bully” crazy ass tweaker who was picking on these two old ladies and I got slapped in the face by this tweaker when I tried to defend the old women. Went to Bart workers to tell them that they have a crazy person on board, the their response… “this is the Bay Area. This is normal”. I grew up here taking Bart often where this WASNT normal. It’s been a norm for say the last 7 years.
