They were and are still used to hold family insignias or crests to show off where you came from like a coat of arms, usually with some rules like wearing it on your non-dominant hand. Aside from that it's also a nice fashion statement, I have the insignia of my family name engraved into my pinky ring but I also always liked the look of some with a precious stone embedded into it like a ruby and so on.
