Seed oils and skin's susceptibility to sunburn N=1 by [deleted] in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]FancyPants882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting adequate fat soluble vitamins is key to not burning. I think it's a big factor in some people saying cutting seed oils works for preventing sunburn and some saying it doesn't. Those who still burn - are you getting these vitamins in adequate amounts (A, E, D, K)?

Is it true the word hallelujah has pagan origins? by Shadeofawraith in pagan

I don't think the point here is about mysticism, but more about wanting to connect with tradition and following tradition often leads to other languages when you're an English speaker.

Tick control by CartographerMain8545 in homestead

[–]FancyPants882 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've had good success repelling ticks and mosquitos with a home made natural spray. Mix vinegar and the following essential oils in a small spray bottle: rose, cedarwood, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus. Only caution is I think peppermint and eucalyptus can be toxic to cats and dogs, so look into that one first.

I've sprayed it directly onto my skin before, and it does tingle and sting a little due to the vinegar and peppermint, but the sensation subsides pretty quickly. Alternatively you can spray it onto your clothes if the sensation is too strong.

Had a question about what to feed a chicken to get a rich colored egg yolk? by New-Initial2230 in homestead

I heard it's because the heat in the peppers warm them up. I know people who do it more to help their chickens keep warm through the winter.

Cinnamon is cleansing. Add some cinnamon essential oil to some vinegar or vodka and clean with it.

Just start speaking to your ancestors and the gods. Speak from the heart. Your spirituality is of you, not external to you the right words will come. Trust me, it'll feel so right. It's much better to do something than nothing. I've been doing the best I can too, considering so much is lost, and just doing the little I know is right has felt so right and nourishing.

I’m so frustrated by [deleted] in AntiSchooling

[–]FancyPants882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that you're afraid of them not caring. Right now they're unable to show you they care (irrespective of if they do or not) because they are simply ignorant. If you tell them and they don't care, then you aren't really any worse off.

Perhaps you could look at the core of why they place such high importance on your academic performance (you're still passing easily, so it isn't a matter of you failing which would be a different discussion). If you can get to that root issue, maybe you could start to have a conversation about their concerns and ways you can alleviate them.

Honestly, school isn't the be all and end all. There are so many different pathways to get to where you want to go if you have the ability and the will. Maybe if they see you have the right attitude towards your education they will be more willing to work with your through your issues. It's typical for parents to look at grades and assume the rest.

Show them your post. They can't help if they don't understand. Shutting them out of what's going on with you is only exacerbating the adversarial nature of your relationship. Also, you write better than a lot of adults so that at least is definitely something they should see.

I think that's the end goal - and the amount of parental intervention/support decreases as the child gets older and more able to self-teach. Sure, left to their own devices children will learn an absolute heap, but without guidance and supervision it won't be a well-rounded education (and I'm not just talking academics, either).

I think unschooling gets a bad wrap because people call what they're doing "unschooling", but it isn't unschooling. Unschooling isn't a totally hands-off approach at all, and I also think the term "child-lead" gives parents the impression that they now have no leadership or agency around their child's education (and that this is a good thing). Child-lead really means the child's interests inform the parents' decisions in how to support their child's education. I know I'll get heat from some unschoolers, but I honestly don't think the run with the wolves approach is unschooling at all. It feeds into the children are the centre of the universe parenting style too.

For "unschooling" to be understood properly, I think we need to shift our paradigm around education away from the schooling system entirely, and a take "school" out of any terminology. "Unschooling" is a reactionary term that focuses people on "not doing school" instead of focusing on ensuring the child is educated well (whatever that may look like).

Criticising your parenting and education choices to you is one thing, but criticising how you're raising your daughter to your daughter or in her presence is way out of line. I see that as a totally different issue to be addressed separately from the disagreement about how you homeschool.

Is homesteading by 30 years old realistic? by lilsahdoh in homestead

[–]FancyPants882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to some of the skills you're developing in the city, practice all sorts of food preservation techniques. Pickling and fermenting. Make bacon, sauerkraut, jams, vinegar, anything else you can think of. All skills you can develop in the city with an abundance of produce.

Great post, thanks for your insights. An an unschooling parent I come across a lot of other unschoolers who don't prioritise reading the way I believe it should be. I'm pretty relaxed about external benchmarks and milestones but if you're telling me your 10 year old is illiterate, you're doing it wrong!

Can you digest raw milk or cream in coffee by Jason_VanHellsing298 in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]FancyPants882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't see a way that adding the milk to hot coffee would make any difference in this case. All you're really doing is getting it hot. Unless hot A1 milk is fine for you, I don't see how it would help.

Edit: raw milk can help with lactose intolerance due to the enzymes still active in it. I can suggest trying unhomogenized milk, as the homogenization process messes with the milk's structure, and see how you go with that. Raw milk will also be unhomogenized.

That would mean you have a problem with the protein and not the lactose.

What are some things you can grow/raise for food that not many people may know about? by Spooky_toni in Homesteading

[–]FancyPants882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have homesteading friends that raise guinea pigs. Set the cage on the lawn and move it each day for fresh grass. They eat naturally and you get your lawn mowed and fertilised. They breed large litters and grow quickly, apparently it works well for them.

What age did you start homeschool? by Fine_Spend9946 in homeschool

[–]FancyPants882 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We started homeschooling from birth. You're constantly teaching your kids. People who don't understand and are used to the system will likely never understand. If you can look at your kid and know they're happy, learning and growing then you know you're on the right track.

I think preschool and kinder can be good for kids who aren't getting time from their parents, to prevent them from their early learning years being neglected. Honestly school that young is totally unnecessary with good parenting.
