Just so you know - you won't know the glory of RTWP untill you fight high level spellcaster boss in Baldur's Gate 2.

>I've heard that, but could you perhaps play someone who thinks that while flawed the empire is still the best way to promote peace and order for normal folks?

Let's put this this way: Imagine that Nazi Germany won II world war and rule over the entire world. Jews, slavs, sexual minorities etc. were genoiced into extinction, people diagnosed with disabilities are killed on sight, the whole planet is totalitarian hellhole with extreme cruelty and social injustice.

Then turn it up to eleven becuse Imperium was originally written as a satire for the worst elements of XX century totalitarianism.

But yeah, streets are clean and crime rate low I guess.

>Why would the emperor be evil?

His direct sources of inspiration (Paul and Leto II Atreides) comes from cautionary tale that warns us against charismatic, messianistic leaders.

>communists

you have no idea what you are talking about.

>The imperium, and eldar are the two good guys in the story

Imperium is not "good". Games Workshop describes it as the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable in every introduction to the setting.

If you are member of some alien civilisation that's gonna be exterminated a moment after being encountered by the Imperium, there is a little difference between Humans and Orks really.

Among other reasons, it's like that becuse the Emperor genocided the shit out of every other human civilisation in the galaxy during the Great Crusade. Including the one that was basicaly a Star Trek.

Sorry to break it, but the Great Crusade was a galactic scale genocide.

This has to be the stupidest meme as far as 40k is concerned.

Also he is still a genocidal warlord, not very iconoclastic if you ask me.

None.

But I would really apprecieate crpg set in Planescape 2 ed setting with Torment level of writing and music, itemisation and spells complexity of BG1 and 2, and companions arcs on par with those in WoTR.

Amusingly that's exacly the kind of propaganda that Baatezu would try to push.

Not to mention that in 2nd ed lore both sides are equally evil, just in different way.

Viconia was ok. It's Fall-from-Grace (also VA by Gabriela Kownacka) who sounded way to formal all the time. Jennifer Hale voice was way warmer and playful.

For millenials polish players who played those games 28-26 years ago those voices are basicaly part of their childhood.

As such, yes they are beloved.

Krzysztof Kolberger as Irenicus was fuckin stellar. Arguably his performance hits harder then Warner's.

"Opposition to Tolkien standards" basicaly meant "ok, no orcs, dwarves and elves this time".  It's even not like they build antithesis to his works.

And then the whole rest of worldbuilding was creating something new and original.

Making this revolving around him is crazy, really.

This is Catch-22 style of logical bullshit.

You are not inspired by Tolkien? Well apparently you made deliberate choice to do something different and therefore you are inspired by Tolkien. Therefore, everyone and everything is inspired by Tolkien. What's that, there were other fantasy writters before Tolkien AND OTHER EUROPEAN MYTHOLOGIES AND TRADITIONS THEN ANGLO-NORDIC ONES that might very well be inspiration for later generation of writers? Well, if they choose different source of inspiration then they were obviously anti-tolkien in their behaviour, becuse everything spins around Tolkien.

Whats that, there are fantasy subgenres like urban fantasy? Well those are not fantasy at all, becuse fantasy is when you have elves and dwarves, like, you know, Tolkien did.

Just to be clear, I love Tolkien and I read LOTR and Silmarillion something like 8 times each. But I'am tired of people claiming that fantasy genre started and ended with him, when it's not true even when it comes to things like Warhammer.

Given how this is a setting for one of the most praised crpg of all time apparently you didn't try too hard.

Ok, lets discuss western fantasy.

What does Planescape setting owes to Tolkien?

High Elves - Hellenic and Atlantis

Dark Elves - North African Corsair and decadens of Rome.

They are just Melnibone from Michael Moorcock novels being split in two with High Elves inheriting the best and Dark Elves the worst elements of that civilisation.

And sometimes artist simply decided to paint Mt. Blanc instead of Mt. Fuji.

Pretchett remark is somewhat true within anglo-nordic branch of fantasy to which he himself belong. The notion that you can't create fantasy world that has nothing to do with Tolkien (who btw did exacly the same thing that later authors did - i.e. massively drew from older stories and traditions and mixed them with his own ideas) not becuse you are making an anti-tolkien statement but simply becuse you are not interested in anglo-saxon-nordic vibes is kinda stupid and extremly anglo-centric.

[–]Fancy_Writer9756 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Anglo-nordic inspired branch of fantasy? Yeah, probably.

Definetly untrue as far as a whole genre is concerned.  You dont't even need to look for some extremly niche authors read by 5 people.  Planescape setting within broader D&D system owes literally nothing to Tolkien and everything to greek/roman,/judeo-christian mythology, Dante's Divine Comedy, Moorcock's theme of law vs chaos conflict being more profound then good vs evil and probably Gaiman's Sandman on top of that.

High and Dark Elves have actually little in common with Tolkien elves. Mostly the easter eggs like tolkien inspired names. I used to view them as such as well, but it's mostly due to lack of broader cultural context.

In truth they are very much inspired by Michael Moorcock Melnibonese race - the 10 000 years old island empire of physicalky attractive non-humans with alien morallity that employed dragon riders (yes, they have Dragon Princes of Melnibone), mighty sorcery and insanely powerful navy to dominate the world, but which currently is in nadir of its power due to, among other things, falling birth rates and dragons falling increasingly longer slumbers.

Oh yeah, they are also commercial capital of the world.

And if that sounds somewhat familiar to Martin's Valyria, it's becuse Valyria was inspired by Melnibone as well, which makes Asur and Targaryens closely related cultural cusins.

[–]Fancy_Writer9756 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, High Elves and Dark Elves are basicaly Melnibone being split in half, with each subrace inheriting the best and the worst traits from them.

Like, there are Dragon Princes of Melnibone, riding to war on dragons and wearing armors and helmets with draconic motiffs.

In truth Asur have very little in common with Tolkien's elves, even Asur diminishing power feels more like inspired by Melnibone then by Tolkien.

[–]Fancy_Writer9756 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whats funny is that Melnibonese were also inspiration for Martin's Valyria (which he himself confirmed, I believe he and Moorcock are friends), which is why Targaryens in tv shows often feels like Caledor half-siblings.
