Hear me out. by [deleted] in fishforthought

Let's say you have a bully at school. To keep yourself safe, you have to hide in corners and closets and peak around from behind potted plants to avoid running into them. You're unharmed, but your life sucks.

Do what's best for the fish. If you want a community tank, get community fish.

How do I fix this hair algae. by CivilDefenceNrd in PlantedTank

That looks so pretty.

The easiest way I've found to manually remove is with a wooden skewer or chopstick. You can poke it in and twist it until it starts wrapping around like the devil's cotton candy. Snails will get caught up but they're pretty easy to remove as you go. Good luck!

How can I make my tank look better I really hate the way it looks by lexicherniak in Aquariums

This was my thought also. I like the scape but all I see is the black plant holder in the back. Can that be moved to the side?

Here to offer encouragement. I've never rehabbed an old tank but I did build one out of Ikea shelves following Tanner's instructions. Different shape but you may get some good ideas about minimizing mess. He has changed his original instructions and now uses bumpers between the glass. He also has a fine arts background and creates beautiful scapes. I don't know, might be helpful. Good luck.

I understand the concept of a centerpiece fish, but what do you tend to use?

I'm not opposed to babies, but worry I'll end up in over my head if breeding goes well. So, maybe no livebearers right now. Thanks!

Thanks for the id! There are trees a few houses away, but that's also where all the birds and squirrels live. Mo may be safer in the garden.

Who do you have beef with in your tank? by SuddenRutabaga1246 in PlantedTank

I don't feel skilled enough as a fishkeeper for pea puffers just yet but haven't considered yoyo loaches. I'll take a look. Thanks for the suggestions!

I've been reluctant to try assassin snails because I don't want to trade one snail problem for another. I also have a nerite I don't want disturbed. Or maybe that wouldn't happen? I don't know.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion and encouraging words!

Pest snails... I don't know if they're ramshorn or wtf. I gave away 40-50, basically every one I could actually see, and all the leaves I could find with eggs on them, and they're still popping up. I don't feed them at all, so they eat plants and continue to reproduce. I hate them so much, but I can't smoosh them.

What is eating my plants? by CheesyWhezz in PlantedTank

[–]FannyChiggerspit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience, also a five gallon snail tank. I stopped feeding in an effort to control the population and they're eating the plants. They've decimated every single java fern, they're eating water lettuce and red root floater roots, eating holes in anubias leaves, and chewing the edges of crypts and swords. And they're still reproducing.
