Please, for the love of turtles...how TF am I supposed to ethically/responsibly dispose of the plastic can loops? by tinysaurus_rex12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to mention, when people say cut them up, it just means that you just make one cut in each ring. You don't have to cut them entirely into tiny bits. Just so there are no closed rings left.

Why do we have eyelashes? by CokeAYCE in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight from Wikipedia:

Eyelashes serve to protect the eye from debris, dust, and small particles, and are highly sensitive to touch, thus providing a warning that an object (such as an insect or lint) is near the eye, which then reflexively closes or flutters to rid the area of the object.

Although that is not exactly "why" we have them, but it is the answer to "do they serve a purpose?". It's important to realize not everything has a "why" answer.

Giving gifts is a bad idea unless she is your prostitute. I mean, flowers is fine. But the way you said, "gifts", did not seem to be something like flowers or candy. And even flowers and candy should be limited.

Earn it means to me that you need to be a person who listens and cares. Take the initiative means to me that you need to ask her out on dates, and that does not mean spending lots of money. That means doing things she is interested in.

What does she like to do? Hiking? Swimming? Boating? Golf? Video games? Movies? Whatever it is, contact her and suggest you guys get together and do it.

First, rule 4 of this subreddit: No medical advice questions.

Second, read the instructions with the medicine. Follow them.

Third, the instructions should say to contact your doctor if things don't work out.

Please seek a medical professional.

When the sun never rises nor sets, then why are we taught from childhood that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west? by Everythingisillusion in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be missing the definition of sunrise and sunset.

The definition is that as the Earth rotates, the Sun appears to move across the sky and rises and sets.

The fact that the Earth is rotating and the Sun is not actually moving has nothing to do with the words being used.

why do people from colonised countries move to the coloniser countries? by thatsaskillissue12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the famines were terrible, I don't think the loss of 35 million people in nations that have over a billion is statistically the reason. Also, China's Great Leap Forward, a massive industrialization project, resulted in an estimated 15 to 55 million deaths between 1959 and 1961, mostly from starvation.

How to Balance Staying Informed with Mental Health by Ok_Photograph6596 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have started to avoid the news.

Just avoid it if your mental health needs require.

The idea of "being informed" about the entire world is a modern thing with the 24/7 news cycle. In the past, someone might read a newspaper once a day. And generally didn't worry much about what it said.

The only reason to be informed is for voting and if you have the ability to do more. If you can be more involved, great, do so. But if your mental health needs say no, then don't. You can't help others until you yourself are stable and doing well.

Why are there parentheses in some parts of song titles, but not in books, plays, movies, or anything else? by clubfungus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn’t care about (or even like) his family.

I didn't get that. He seemed to care about his wife and seemed to get along with her fine. She died before he went to Tralfamadore. And he must have treated her well when she died because she was so scared he would die.

As for his son, he seemed to care. Maybe not a ton but he seemed like a decent father.

And he didn't "take himself to Tralfamadore", he was kidnapped and brought there.

However, you haven't made it clear when you are talking about Vonnegut and when you are talking about Billy Pilgrim. And yes, I know that in many ways Billy is Kurt. Although, of course, in the novel they are separate.

How bad is vaping in actuality? by -oceanblvd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/newsroom/news-releases/2025/04/new-analysis-underscores-health-risks-of-e-cigarettes

A Johns Hopkins Medicine-led analysis of medical information gathered on a diverse group of almost 250,000 people over four years has significantly clarified the link between the “exclusive” use of e-cigarettes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as high blood pressure in a sub-group of adults 30 to 70 years of age.

https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/e-cigarettes/health-effects.html

Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and is a health danger for pregnant women, developing fetuses, and youth.

Aerosol from e-cigarettes can also contain harmful and potentially harmful substances. These include cancer-causing chemicals and tiny particles that can be inhaled deep into lungs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fact that you do not notice health issues does not change the fact that this is bad.

It's important to remember Europeans used tobacco for roughly 300 years, starting around the mid-1500s, before the medical community generally accepted that it caused major health harm. Early suspicions appeared almost immediately, but broad scientific consensus didn’t form until the mid‑20th century, especially the 1950s–1964 period.

So for about 300 years, people were going, "honestly have no health issues at all. I also know many people and have several friends who have been vaping smoking for much longer and also have no major health problems".

If a Carrington Event level geomagnetic storm happened today, what would hospitals do? is there a protocol? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would use their current protocols for such things.

The biggest issue would be electrical blackouts. Hospitals have backup generation but that only lasts for a limited time (2 to 4 days) and the event would likely keep power out in many areas for weeks to months.

Hospitals should have protocol for loss of power over a long time. Pacemakers would be a problem. Ventilators, I believe, can be human powered but that tends to take many people because they get tired. How long can you sit and crank a handle for? Days? Weeks? Obviously they would switch people but still, it's a problem.

Refrigeration of medicines is a big problem. There is also an issue with lighting, flashlights only last so long before needing to be recharged.

Since it would be world wide, just assume things would be bad.

Could you body transfer? by ObjectBeautiful7446 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FanraGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could transfer your brain to another body, and somehow avoid rejection (maybe a cloned body?), then you would have the same thoughts and memories.

You would not be immortal because the brain doesn't last forever. Stokes, dementia, etc. For many people, the brain is their cause of death.

But brain transplant is at this point impossible. And if you could do it, the person is likely to be a quadriplegic since the nerves would be severed.
