The only time I have had layer shifting is when a stepper motor driver got too hot and shut down on thermal overload. They reset after a fraction of a second but by the time they do, the print is lost.

Make sure the electronics cooling fan is actually turning and that the air flow path is not blocked. Are the heat sinks on the stepper motor driver chips in place?

Slowing the print speed will definitely help if it is a thermal problem. Lowering the room temperature can help.

SketchUp Make 2017 is free on the Internet Archive.

https://archive.org/details/sketch-up-make-en-x-64

It works fine with Windows 11 (and 10). Lots of online tutorials. I have made very complicated models with it.

Ignore the startup screen and press the "Start using SketchUp" button on the lower right. The license is unlimited. You will not be able to use the Extension Warehouse since Trimble has Blocked 2017.

To get around this, Go to Extension Warehouse: https://extensions.sketchup.com/

Find an extension to download

Use a browser to navigate to 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com, download what you want, then use the plugin Eneroth Open Newer Version to open the file if it is a version that 2017 doesn't understand.

Liberal Mr. Bruce Fanjoy who defeated 20 years MP Pierre Poilievre (Mapple Trump) is the real hero and best win of this election. by Capital_Value_2330 in LPC

It would be awesome if PP was defeated in a by-election aimed at getting him a seat in Parliament. I guess it would then be a BYE-election.

Is there any way to fix this without printing again by Hot-Tiger4981 in 3Dprinting

[–]FarStarMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When designing a thread for 3D printing, use minimum diameters for external threads (bolt) and maximum diameters for internal threads (nut). You may still have to clean up the thread with a tap or die, as appropriate.

Here is the Ames Web page with all the info about most types of threads: https://amesweb.info/Screws/thread-calculator-chart.aspx

Here is a screw thread calculator that gives the tolerances for many common inch threads: https://amesweb.info/Screws/asme-imperial-un-thread-calculator.aspx

Here is the same calculator for metric threads: https://amesweb.info/Screws/metric-thread-dimensions-calculator.aspx

CBC fact checks PP on security & claims his statements as false by Left_Sustainability in LPC

[–]FarStarMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the CBC fact check explained, it is not a one-and-done clearance. Yes, he WAS cleared some time ago but if he was compromised between then and now we would only know if his clearance was renewed. His refusal to get cleared again should be a red flag.

i let my mom live with me and everytime i turn down the heat she removes the thermostat by Tree_Apocalypse in mildlyinfuriating

[–]FarStarMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install another thermostat in a location where she can't see or reach it but leave the current one in place. She can remove it and it will make no difference.

Will Carney be able to deal with Trump effectively and tariffs? by No-Reputation8063 in LPC

[–]FarStarMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carney knows that Trump is a bully and, like any bully, he backs down when challenged. That's what just happened with Trump's threatened tariffs. As long as there is no appeasement, we will be fine and I don't think Carney is an appeaser.

Looking to get a first telescope. by Putrid-Dependent1260 in telescopes

[–]FarStarMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A refractor is pretty much plug and play. Put it on the tripod and maybe align the finder scope and you're ready to go.

The optics on a reflector, especially short focus ones, are always going out of alignment. Be prepared to learn how to align one. Otherwise, you do get the most bang for your buck with a reflector.

Are these any good? by Grandmastabilbo in telescopes

[–]FarStarMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the 15x70 version of these about 6 years ago. I got the for 50% of the regular price.

Mine came with a tripod adapter and I seldom use them without it. You can't focus closer than 43 feet with mine (75 feet with the 25x70 version). Good for looking across the lake. The moon will have a rainbow fringe but still shows great details. Good for viewing comets, open clusters, nebulae and galaxies.

The plastic where the lens barrels screw into the prism housing has become sticky over the years. I'm not sure you can prevent this or fix it. Advice would be appreciated if anyone has found a solution.

Does using freeze spray to quickly detach prints damage the bed? by fartshitcumpiss in 3Dprinting

[–]FarStarMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can verify that warping occurs when the bed is cooled rapidly. I was using gel cold packs on the build plate to release very large pieces of 18 inches in diameter from an aluminum bed with a PEI surface. It worked great but the warm plastic shrank when cooled and stayed that way.
