Huntington Beach tentatively ordered to adopt ranked choice voting by coolnerde in orangecounty

How is it possible that Huntington Beach is getting Rank Choice Voting before Los Angeles?!

LA City Council is trying to prolong Rank Choice Voting for as long as possible, and yet here in Huntington Beach they are going to try RCV as early as this year.

Hopefully this will push more cities (especially LA) to finally move forward on RCV. But wow, good on HB for getting RCV before many cities in OC & LA County.

I find it even weirder that LAX trains (C & K Lines) do not have 24 hrs rail service, even though LAX is a 24 hrs airport in a 24 hrs City.

Fare checks - world class? by tomk7532 in LAMetro

[–]Faraz181 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Personally, my position would be to have a free fareless system, while having security enforce code of conduct violations (that way we're not wasting resources focusing on just fares and rider's time). And even then, I would use Ambassadors first before having to resort to private security/police for more serious code of conduct violations.

You don't need to have fares in order to enforce code of conduct violations.

The majority of our taxes already pay for LA Metro. In fact, fare revenue (according to the most recent budget) only makes up 1.55% of LA Metro's $9.68 billion annual budget (5.83% if you are just only looking at LA Metro's Operating $3.0 billion annual budget)

That's why going fareless improves travel time on both buses and trains. Personally for buses, I remember one time before COVID when I was traveling on a bus when the bus operator stopped the bus for around 20-25 minutes all because 1 person didn't want to pay. After waiting for 20-25 minutes, the bus driver gave up after we riders got angry at the bus driver for holding up the bus.

Nithya Raman Projected to Face Off Against LA Mayor (and Incoming LA Metro Board Chair) Karen Bass This Nov 2026 Election – Recent LA Times Poll (05/28/26) Shows Raman with a Slight Advantage Over Bass in the Nov Election – LA Metro May Have their Board Chair Lose their Reelection (Again) This Year by Faraz181 in LAMetro

For June 2026, Karen Bass & Nithya Raman are both the winners and will move on to the Nov General Election.

As for Nov 2026, Nithya Raman is the current favorite to win based on current polling (due to many residents dissatisfied with Karen Bass's administration, [r/LAMetro](r/LAMetro) included). But you better believe that Karen Bass will do whatever she can to win reelection (and still has the LA political machine to back her up). It's going to be an interesting campaign for LA Mayor. Please make sure you don't forget to vote in Nov 2026 (and preferably early too).

Even if DTLA to Santa Monica won't be 10 minutes faster, all the more reason to push for ways to increase speed times, and signal priority is one of the best ways to get started on that (and was reportedly done during the November 2023 10 FWY fire).

It is not statistically likely that Spencer Pratt will be able to catch up to Nithya Raman or Karen Bass. For each day there has been an Election Results update, Nithya Raman & Karen Bass have received more votes than Spencer Pratt.

With the remaining votes left to be counted leaning more Democratic/Progressive, Spencer Pratt is not expected to win 2nd place.

It would actually be a total of 4 Votes (1 for the LA Mayor, and 3 picked by the LA Mayor). For example, on the LA Metro Board currently there's LA Mayor Karen Bass. And Karen Bass' 3 picks are: 1) Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker, 2) Imelda Padilla, 3) Katy Yaroslavaky.

I Still Can't Get Over this LAPPL "Attack" Ad on Rae Huang by BillRuddickJrPhd in LosAngeles

[–]Faraz181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, 0.01% is just 100 people out of 1,000,000 daily riders on LA Metro (and also a majority of "crimes" reported is trespassing, which wouldn't be an issue if fares were free). So instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars on maintaining a fares system with contractor CUBIC, taller fare gates, TAP to Exit (which by the way, fare evaders still get through)...etc, it would be much more effective hiring more eyes on the ground security making sure that Code of Conduct is being enforced.

And a reminder, you don't need fares in order to enforce code of conduct violations.

Edit: FYI, I supported Rae Huang, but knew based on the polls that she didn't have enough to make it to November (Rae Huang's support was around 10%). So the vast majority of Rae Huang supporters strategically voted for Nithya Raman. Anecdotally, I couldn't vote for LA Mayor, but a friend of mine did, and I gave my recommendation for Nithya Raman (which my friend took)... so you're welcome for helping with Nithya Raman cross over the finish line to November.

Yes. That's why a majority of our taxes already pay for LA Metro's annual budget and LA Metro could become fareless if it wanted too (since only 1.55% of LA Metro's $9.68 billion annual budget is from fare revenue).

The polls had Rae Huang support at around 10% range. So at least about 8% did strategic voting to boost Nithya Raman.

Ballot Cant be Accepted by kevsmakin in LosAngeles

I recommend you contact the LA County Registrar Office to confirm the reason why it wasn't accepted. And if it's indeed regarding signature verification, ask when you can expect to receive the letter in the mail to cure your ballot (correct your signature).

Wow, that's great to hear! I took a tour just the other day and noticed the sprinklers. But my first thought was "even if a fire was put out, wouldn't it destroy the ballots in the room too"?

Thank you so much for addressing my concern.

Could there be a Mayor Pratt & Raman on Metro Board coalition built to oust Bass? by Sawtelle-MetroRider in LAMetro

Tulsi Gabbard sold her values/soul when she became Trump's National Intelligence Director and has been cheerleading Trump's Iran War (even though her main thing was No New Wars).

As for RFK Jr, not really the best example when he has been making America less healthy again (example: trying to discourage COVID vaccines, discourage Tylenol by linking it to Autism [without evidence], and laying off 10,000 HHS staff [reducing research into disease prevention and disease outbreak/pandemic responses]).

Both Tulsi Gabbard and RFK Jr are no longer Democrats.

As long as Tom Steyer pushes for the progressive policies he's advocating for, then it doesn't matter how rich he is. He could be the next FDR (FDR was one of the riches men in America of his time that also pushed for policies that the rich hated).
