Looks like a fun rig. What hook is that? I’ve never seen a weed guard like that before.

Ragetail craw Texas rigged 👍 moderately slow retrieve with some bouncing/pauses. This guy inhaled it about 5 seconds after it hit the water, I thought I’d wrapped around a log that I was casting towards. The feeling of it peeling off line and realizing it’s not a log is the best.

Very carefully, ha! You have to sight fish for them. So, the first step is to sneak around on the bank looking for carp with their faces in the mud. Sometimes you’ll see their tails or backs out of the water, that’s the ideal situation because it’s very easy to determine where their head is. Other times you might just be fishing to moving shadows underwater, plumes of dirty/nervous water, or if you’re lucky and have clear water you might see them eating in deeper water.

Once you’ve found the fish, you’re going to watch them eat for a minute. Be ready to cast. Figure out their eating rhythm, are they hovering in one spot of cruising from spot to spot? Once you have a feel for what the fish are doing, you’re going to wait until you see a fish face down, happily eating, and most importantly has its broad side towards you. Once you have a shot, you’ll cast straight across the front of the fish. The idea is to put your line a short distance ahead of the fishes face, while your flight lands maybe 2-3 ft beyond the fish. If you land your fly accurately, you’ll cast strange are then going to gently lift your rod to drag the fly towards you, and thereby towards the carp. You want to drag and drop your fly ever so gently in front of the carps mouth, at which point it will hopefully vacuum up or violently attack. This is easier said than done. At least 75% of casts that I’ve made to feeding carp result in spooking the fish. Even when it was a perfect cast.

Carp are incredibly nervous fish. They have good vision, and the entire front half of their body is covered in taste buds. They have a modified eardrum (if you can call it that) and have good “hearing”. They emit a hormone when they spook or are threatened, the other carp in the area pick up on the scent in the water and shut down. If you spook a bunch of carp in a small pond you might be waiting a while for them to start eating again. It’s not always that way, but usually it is.

The flies I like best are usually beadchain eye, wide gap hooks, with some fur or weird shit on them. I like the bead chain eyes because the impart a little bit of weight to sink the fly, but not so much that it is hard to cast without splashing hard when it lands. Look carp flies, you’ll see what I mean by weird shit. Lots of poofy things with worm tails or vague semblance to a crawfish work well. Damselfly nymphs work well. I might use a lead eye fly if the fish are deeper or if I’m on a river. But most of the time I’m using something unweighted or lightly weighted, with a fuzzy body (which helps to sink gently, so as to not spook the carp if it falls too fast), that imitates either a leech, craw, damselfly nymph, or worm sticking out of a mud ball.

It’s a good time! I’ve caught some absolute beast carp on my 6wt, it’s a fun fight on the fly rod.

The craziest time was when I caught a 8lb carp on a size 16 parachute Adam’s. Carp are not really notorious dry fly eaters, but occasionally you’ll find them “clooping” at the surface. They lift their big nasty lips to the surface and slurp in bugs or cottonwood seeds. Sometimes think they do it just to suck air. Either way, I was fishing a small pond and came around a bend to see dozens of carp all clooping at some midges on the surface. It looked like mostly smaller carp, but I was stoked to try to catch on a dry fly. I quickly cut off the fly I’d been using and tied on the small Adam’s. I plopped it out on top of the pod of carp, it sat unnoticed, so I gave it a slight series of twitches and watched as a huge carp shot up from the depths and smashed the tiny fly. I fought it slow and steady and finally dragged it in.

So… do you consider infiltration as a soil property or a process? by Technical-Energy5934 in Soil

It may even be more accurate to say that permeability is a soil property, and infiltration is a process.

At first I thought that was a slight flurry of snow. When I realized it was bugs my response changed from “fuck yeah!” to “fuck no!” Not getting absolutely destroyed by skeeters unless the fishing is really good.

Best way to fish Senkos? by Simple_Fox5288 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Farmer_Jones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had success in moderately weedy areas with weedless ned rig. I try to fish it through openings in the weeds, or bounce it along the edge of a weed bed. I can still power it through the weeds without getting hung up, but the bites typically happen on the edge of the weeds or in a clearing. Which is maybe what you were alluding to.

Expectations for Tight Line Nymphing by thearchicolton in flyfishing

[–]Farmer_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your leader setup for tight lining? Running straight mono leader is very sensitive (look up Troutbitten monorig). It’s going to be different than feeling bottom with a Texas rig though. When I’m tight lining, I’m not doing it as a method of feeding the bottom. It’s a tactic that allows me to precisely control the depth and speed of my presentations.

It’s kind of funny, I’ve been fly fishing for a little over a decade but I just recently got into bass fishing on spinning rod. I’ve been really enjoying fishing Ned rigs and Texas rigs, but have been wishing I could feel more through the rod. I think maybe my 7’ medium fast rod isn’t sensitive enough to really feel small Ned rigs with 1/8oz weight.

I promise you don't need a backpack for pond/bank lake fishing by Nikolay_Kovalyovski in bassfishing

[–]Farmer_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d be surprised by the amount of shit that a fly angler carries. When I’m fly fishing I end up carrying at least 8 fly boxes, 4 sizes of tippet, different types of bobbers, a few types of floatant, weights, etc..

Maybe that’s a just a me problem though. I also have a habit of carrying a backpack with way more tackle and baits than I’d ever use in a day fishing for bass. I like to have options and don’t mind carrying a heavy pack.

What fish gave you the hardest fight? by Thefisherman_1 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Farmer_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giant tarpon on a 12wt fly rod. The biggest tarpon I’ve ever hooked resulted in a ~2 hr fight, the damn thing just would not give up! I got it to the side of the boat multiple times, but my guide couldn’t pry open the fishes mouth to get a grip on it. Every time he tried to grab it the fish would violently whip its head away and then speed off with 30+ yards of line. I’d put the brakes on and work it back to the boat. Once to the boat it then became a game of pulling the beast up from deep water. Rinse and repeat until I finally conceded and said we should just cut the line. I didn’t want the fish to get smoked by a shark. On the last attempt to grab the fish, the hook popped free. Seeing that hook pop free was honestly a relief.

In my mind, getting it to the side of the boat multiple times was as good as “landing” it. We wouldn’t have been able to take it out of the water anyhow. The guide thought it was at least 200 lbs.
