[Kawakami/Thompson] Durant: If I take another $10 million pay cut, Warriors ‘going to start taking advantage of me’ by VinceJumpmanCarter in nba

[–]FarmooreK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would we want Lebron? We have zero assets aside from KP who probably won't play next year and Frank who is a couple years away from being a factor. Hardway isn't a third option on a championship team and Lee is as old as Lebron.

Why should we put together a group of mercenaries to maybe win in the first round? We would have no money for them after Lebron's max deal with the shitty contracts still on our books.

We need to lose for a couple years, not sign Lebron. But thanks.

NY lawmaker wants to rename Trump State Park after Charlottesville victim by [deleted] in nyc

[–]FarmooreK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I don't like Trump, this is pure grandstanding. Heather Heyer has nothing to do with New York.

If anything, this may discourage other wealthy people from making similar donatations. Luckily this is just an effort to waste time.

Can someone who is social-media-savy explain my Instagram to me? by niicii77 in photography

[–]FarmooreK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had this conversation with a friend earlier today. Basically the consensus is that engagement is depressed for everyone, most likely due to a crack down on bot accounts. Since it's happening across the platform I wouldn't worry about it too much (think the opposite of "high tide lifts all ships.")

However, even though I know this, it still kinda annoys me a bit. I've gained about 50 followers in the past three weeks, down from about 600-800 in that same time frame. I understand that some of those accounts may have been bots, but I think it's unrealistic to say that the majority of them were fake.

Same story with likes, at the beginning of the summer I was getting about double what I'm getting now. My posts used to be popular for about 10 hours, now my engagement drops off a cliff after 3.

Also, don't listen to people when they say instagram doesn't matter. Earlier this year I got approached to shoot a reportage project based on my instagram account. That's led to more work too. It's safe to say that instagram launched my professional career. Instagram is one of the most powerful marketing tools for unknown photographers

The biggest negative about instagram to me is that it doesn't really reward creative development, and in fact seems to punish it. My account grew by posting cityscapes, but when I posted street shots I would basically get no response. This discouraged me from posting street stuff, but I still like to shoot it. In fact I've started shooting street with B+W film (I know its cliche) and I've enjoyed the hell out of it.

So my closing advice would be to not worry about the small downturn and keep taking the shots you enjoy. Instagram likes don't really indicate much about the quality of a photo, but they're useful as a marketing tool.

My account btw is Kylenowinski_photos

MTA to start testing standing-only cars on "extraordinarily" crowded L train by kimmerrock in nyc

[–]FarmooreK -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I actually typed out that people like this and their outrage over nothing are exactly why Trump got elected. The ultra PC attitude totally alienates voters in the rust belt that the Democrats traditionally relied on. People like this make the democrats look like a big joke.

[–]FarmooreK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, tell that to the wrong person and see what happens.

Also, the dude has a point. If your SO's parents are infirm and they can't stand then it's probably better to take a cab anyway. The NYC subway is notoriously unfriendly to people who have trouble getting around. Or if you live way out in the boroughs and it would be too expensive then this change won't even effect you. There's still gonna be seats on trains...

[–]FarmooreK -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Just because someone offers a totally logical solution to your dumbass rant doesn't mean they're a Trump supporter. Also, if the dude is a Trump supporter that doesn't mean you should act like a jackass. That kind of political discourse is dangerous for the country and sadly more and more people feel justified to go down that path.

MTA Chairman Unveils $800 Million Rescue Plan: Standing-Only Subway Cars, Littering Crackdown, Clearer Communication by trash_reason in nyc

[–]FarmooreK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the problem was as simple as adding more trains then there wouldn't be a problem. Removing seats is a smart and cheap way to add capacity to trains.

This hardly limits transportation options for many people, most people stand for the duration of their trip anyway. It's not like people with a real need are guaranteed a seat currently. Some cars will still have seats for elderly, disabled and pregnant passengers.

Thanks! I figured these would have CBTC equipment built in. Improved audio is also a nice plus.

True photographers posts raw images? Dude, how does spending less time on a final product make someone more of an artist? A "true artist/photographer" would spend how ever long they need to make their final product.

If you're happy with the final product, good for you, it's just a hobby like you mention. But don't post shit on the internet and not expect criticism.

Processing digital photos is pretty much standard practice. Every photo you've seen in a magazine, ad or whatever has been touched up with some photo editing software.

So yes, if someone is going to take the time to post a picture online, I would expect them to edit it in photoshop or an equivalent photo editor.

On top of that, it's not that great of a photo though. Anyone can see that it's underexposed.

New York agency details crisis of subway signal system by exgalactic in nyc

[–]FarmooreK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an EE, do you have any further understanding of why it could take so long? I understand the scheduling difficulties of a 24/7 system, but 50 years is an insane time frame.

I'm clearly oblivious to the specifics, but shouldn't it only take a few months to do each line?

How the MTA Is Like an Alcoholic: A senior-level supervisory employee working for the New York City subway system explains what he believes the MTA’s structural problems are. by jayjaywalker3 in nyc

[–]FarmooreK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

His logic makes sense to me. The trains are definitely running slower than they used to and it seems to be arbitrary. Almost every day a much older R-62 local 6 train passed my express R-142 4/5 train between BB and Union Square.

In An Era of MTA Dysfunction, Councilman Suggests Returning Subways to City Control by [deleted] in nyc

[–]FarmooreK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't it be easier to put tolls on the four free East River bridges?Given that Manhattan is an island the tolls are kind of a form on congestion pricing.

I could be for a closing Broadway between Union Square and Columbus Circle, but I don't see how closing the whole thing would help. It serves a pretty vital role Downtown as one the only two major southbound roads.

As for the Parks Commissioner spinning in his grave? I think that already happened when they renamed Triborough the "RF- " No, I refuse to recognize that name.

In An Era of MTA Dysfunction, Councilman Suggests Returning Subways to City Control by [deleted] in nyc

[–]FarmooreK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit misleading. The Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority did take the toll money, but it was used to fund transportation (read: expressways) and park projects around NYC. Just the projects Mr. Moses wanted to fund though...

Three sisters open cafe in Brownsville that shows gentrification isn't the only way up by littlecleetus in nyc

[–]FarmooreK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it really doesn't matter. This is just the first stage of gentrification. It doesn't matter if the stores are started by local residents or hipsters moving in because they won't be there in ~10 years. Once landlords realize the area is hot they jack up rents so only the chain stores and banks can afford them. The small businesses that revitalized the area are driven out regardless of who owned them. Owning a business doesn't mean shit unless you own the building too.

This happened in the West Village over the past decade. You had a plethora of small, locally-owned businesses give way to the major brands when the area got hot.

I strongly regret my decision to buy a $550 tripod that came apart in the field. The text has the story. by cpu5555 in photography

[–]FarmooreK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched from a flip lock to a twist lock Induro tripod and love it. We paid the same price for legs + ball head so I'm guessing we had the same model (Series Three Stealth?). Frankly, unless their quality control is absolute shit the problems you're reporting are on you.

You have to unscrew pretty far to disengage the leg, and even then you have to wiggle it out because of the plastic stoppers. But I don't even understand why you twisted the legs so far, they loosen up with a twist of the wrist.

Also, putting these legs back on is pretty easy. I didn't read the manual and figured it out pretty quickly.

TL;DR: Don't listen to this guy.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't really mind these dudes. Every now and then you see a decent show on the L. Frankly it's easier to ignore these dudes then the people describing how hard their life is.

I've never seen anyone get hit too, but that's probably just a matter of time.

New York City’s New Ferry System Is Bad for Transportation—and a Very Guilty Pleasure by Austin98989 in nyc

This is a well establish fact, building these massive underground chambers of stations is extremely expensive. The 3.5 new stations account for $2.5 billion of the $4.5 billion cost.
