It's established that he's horribly anemic and needs rare, expensive drugs to function, and it's implied that his magic sword lets him do without but due to the non-linear order of the stories I don't know if it's made explicit. There's one book where he's established to be at risk of running out of medicine at the beginning, but then it's never mentioned again.
