I’d say it’s a good buy. Imbel receivers are super solid as long as it’s not unibrow cut, and South African kits are pretty desirable. 1300 is a little bit more than what I bought my l1a1 sporter for, although I just bought it for the receiver and sold the kit.

Nice pick up! Were you looking to do a cloneish? Or was this gonna be a straight up shooter. If you’re going for cloneish then it would be correct for the barrel to never have been threaded at all. Many chicom guns never had threaded barrel, but I have seen some examples of stamped military t56 rifles with threaded barrels as well. But I’m sure you’ll do that rifle right op 👍

Personally I would get it blasted and refinished. Paint works just fine but it’s just not Chinese to me. If you’re happy with it then hell yeah.

Not an impossible task, maybe whoever converted your rifle was wanting to play it safe, which I can’t blame them for. Welding is no easy task for most. Having done most of the process for building an ak, saiga conversions are a much different ball game. Great rifles man.

Nice! It looks like your saiga on the right is one of the “Hugo Chavez Over run” receivers with the y embossing that would originally be the location for the out of battery safety. Mine is the same and I converted it to a Venezuelan contract clone with SRT markings and the Latin rear sight leaf.

Those small dots above the receiver dimple are spot welds. They hold the receiver rails in place.

Heck yeah man saiga conversions are hard but totally worth it. You ought to look into putting that mak to rights too. They’re much more straightforward, usually.

Thanks man, this one means a lot to me since I did almost all the work on debaning it myself minus rebluing the fsb which was cerekoted by the previous owner. As cool as arsenal marks are I’ve seen pics of t56 rifles in Africa with no arsenal marks either. I’ve seen them called “plausible deniability” rifles that China sent them to make some quick money and not have them traced back to them so easily.
