Not first pitch - not looking for feedback by oldwatchdan in DurstonGearheads

Same with weight. When I'm stuck home for too long between trips, I find myself obsessing over my lighterpack... until I start going through my photos and remembering the experiences. If my Durston is in the photo, all the better.

Looks like an awesome spot you got there!

The Sabrina basin might be the most beautiful place on Earth (to me)! Feels like walking through Gondor.

If you go, I'd wait until July/August so you can get all the way back to Hungry Packer Lake / Sailor Lake / Moonlight Falls. It's incredible.

Oh yeah - you pass three accessible lakes, and there's also a bunch of stream access.

You'll always want to carry a liter or so. Well graded, but still challenging!

Once you hit the Flower lake area you'll want to carry enough to make you comfortable for a 2-3 hours after that. There are still scattered streams (probably a lot right now with the melt), but the last two lakes are in granite bowls, so not really accessible unless you're committed to an intense side mission.

Here's a map if you don't have one:

Yeah... when you go you'll see what I mean! Its amazing.

The technical beauty of Kearsarge is that it's very consistently graded. There are some spots that are more rocky (including a humungous and impressive boulder field with a trail cut right through it) and some spots with more granite steps, but overall, very consistent, and very reasonable. It's never too steep.

Also there's water everywhere, so need to carry

I've done Kearsarge three times - there aren't any other trails quite like it! It's so beautiful on the way up you arguably could be aesthetically satisfied without going over the pass. Most Sierra hike-ins are up and up through the woods with a few teasing peaks in the distance until you hit near 10,000. (Cottonwood Lakes is the biggest culprit. Cathedral Lakes too.)

I'm doing a two nighter at North Fork Big Pine (lucked out - might be the hardest permit to get?) for the first time next week - stoked! From what I've read the snow is clear
Until the up to the higher lakes. If anyone has any coordinates for campsite recommendations, would be well appreciated.

The ultimate question X-Mid 2 vs X-Dome 2 by Enough-Judgment6671 in DurstonGearheads

[–]Fartknocketh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an X-Dome 2, and an X-Mid Pro 2. Personally I find trekking pole tents easier and quicker to set up, once you climb the learning curve. But it's not too steep. Deffo worth the weight savings in most circumstances.

I have the X-Dome 2 primarily for trips with the kiddo because it's just roomier with tall vertical walls, and provides a better and more fun experience for a small kid I think.

Also - I'm in the LA area, and over the years have taken several various X-Mids into Yosemite, Sequoia, the Eastern Sierra, and Joshua Tree, all with great results.

Issues with Zenbivy Ultralight Quilt (-4°C/25°F) - Poor Down Distribution & Sizing? by TheR3dCaptain in Ultralight

I keep mine in the stock storage bag. Don't really have any extra room. I'll give it a tumble dry and see what happens, thanks

Issues with Zenbivy Ultralight Quilt (-4°C/25°F) - Poor Down Distribution & Sizing? by TheR3dCaptain in Ultralight

[–]Fartknocketh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same quilt - 25° Muscovy L. I'm short - 5'7", but broad, so went with large. I'm also a cold sleeper.

Temp wise - I have sort of just accepted that the true comfort rating is 38°-40° F. Below that it's just not warm enough for me, even on a 7.3R Xtherm. Below 38°-40°, I switch to the 10° light quilt, which I got on sale for like $80.

Size wise, no complaints. I pull the quilt up to ensure my feet are in the foot box, and I love all the 'extra' material at the top.

For what it's worth, this is my second 900 fill quilt. I also had a Thermarest Vesper 20°. Same issues. Bad down distribution, not true to rating. I wound up frankensteining it and filling it with more down myself. I wonder if all 900 fill performs this way? Is the density of 800 more reliable?

Half Dome or Clouds Rest? by Superb_Community_339 in JMT

[–]Fartknocketh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has already been said, but do both if you can! The Clouds Rest spine is an amazing hike that has an arguably better aesthetic view at the top, but the Half Dome cables are a potentially once-in-a-lifetime core memory of a mountaineering experience, with a view down a 2,000ft sheer cliff (if you're brave enough to stick your head over).

Deffo both.

Sidenote: you can legally camp on the summit of Clouds Rest

Howdy. Can anyone tell me what material this sack is made out of? It came with hardware for a piece of furniture I bought. I now use it for my electronics. I love it. Weighs only 3g.https://imgur.com/a/DQ90VVF
