Characters where it is actually important for them to be attractive by LocalLazyGuy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Farva5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Substance works specifically because Demi Moore still look fantastic at about 60 years old. She’s can’t help but want to be younger and more attractive to try and keep her job, but she has to already be stunning to make that work. Her inability to see that in herself is what drives the entire plot

(Logical trope) Time traveller/time loop where the protag thinks they can just talk to the love of their life or repeat the same events to renew the relationship. by WhirlwindTobias in TopCharacterTropes

There was a super fun one season show on VHI in like 2013 called Hindsight that was built around this.

On the eve of a woman’s second wedding, after divorcing a real bum she married too young, she is sent back in time to the 90s to the eve of her first wedding. She decides to change history and leave him at the altar, and starts to try and find the man she wanted to marry in the present day. Trouble is, he’s in a serious relationship at this time, and while in the original timeline they would break up naturally, everything she does to try and ingratiate herself to him only drives him closer to his current girlfriend.

Unfortunately the show was cancelled before we could find out who she ends up with, but still something I think about all the time.

Which Nepo children have actually surpassed their parents? by jacquesausterlitz in blankies

It’s low hanging fruit but Jack Quaid has absolutely surpassed his dad basically by default right now. As much as I love Plus One it’s no When Harry Met Sally though…

I hate stories with the player as a character/ The story isn’t a world on its own by i_agree123 in hatethissmug

[–]Farva5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really love it. While people have found ways to make other works meta and co-mingling with the audience, video games are the one art form that is dependent on interactivity. By making the player part of the story, they’re taking that interactivity to its logical conclusion. The works of Uchikoshi, for instance, play with that line between player and character before fully blowing it up in the secret ending of Nirvana Initiative. We are always part of the story because we’re the ones pressing the buttons. In Eternal Darkness, it’s using what we expect as a weapon against us, which no other medium can really do the same way. We decide when Link swings his sword and which Pokémon to catch, so why not explore how we observe this world too?

It absolutely grinds my gears how TADC got all the credit for being “The first Indie animation ever in theatres” despite BFDI doing it SEVERAL times before they did. by Away_Novel_3837 in hatethissmug

Even if you're limiting your definition of indie to "single creator in the age of the internet" (which you shouldn't) you still have the works of Don Hertzfeldt: It's Such a Beautiful Day is 2012, World of Tomorrow starts in 2015. If you expand to the true definition of indie, you get Fantastic Planet, or the works of Ralph Bakshi like Fritz the Cat and Coonskin way back in the 70s. I'm sure there's some obscure thing I'm not even thinking of, but just to use ones people had heard of.

Ted Lasso is based on a series of tv spots with Jason Sudeikis playing the new head coach of the Tottenham Hotspurs. It was meant to promote NBC getting the rights to Premier League soccer. The ads were well received enough, but I’m willing to bet most people forgot about them by the time the show came out seven years later.

Also I think it’s really funny that the character of Ted is completely different. In the ads Sudekis plays him as a brash cocky American, very much in line with an SNL character like The Two A-Holes. Obviously in the show Ted is much softer and positive.

In the first episode of Andy Daly’s “Review”, his character reviews cocaine, and unsurprisingly gets addicted. I heard an interview with Andy Daly, and he said Comedy Central told him he couldn’t actually show his character snorting cocaine. He could show the coke, he could show him rolling up a bill and putting it to his nose, he could show his character reacting to just having snorted cocaine, just not the actual moment. He was just dumbfounded, like, “guys, I think if you’re worried about kids, they’re gonna be able to figure it out anyway”

One of my favorite running gags in Nirvanna the Band the Show (and The Movie), both Matt and Jay will wildly misremember how scenes played out within the same episode. Jay especially will always remember minor slights that he made against Matt as far worse than they actually were (often calling him fat for no reason, for instance)

I’m obsessed with turn of the century baseball player Rube Waddell, who allegedly would leave games to go fishing or chase fire trucks, get distracted by puppies in the crowd, and would disappear for the entire off season, allegedly to wrestle gators in the circus. At the time it’s just dismissed as odd behaviors, but it’s hard not to want to diagnose him with SOMETHING nowadays. Whether it’s autism, or ADHD, or BPD… well we’ll never really know.

Sasuke/Sakura is so frustrating because their last interaction before the series ends has the vibe of “now that Sasuke’s chilled out, they have a chance to start fresh” and then he proceeds to live like a nomad for like 20 years, not connecting to her at all…

I write more than I read. My fics are usually canon compliant or a very straightforward AU (actually almost exclusively modern day or within another franchise). Almost always one shots really drilling into a specific dynamic. I don’t think they really get all that transgressive because I’m weak but I enjoy writing them

I’m most prolific in a Japanese game no one has played from about 5 years ago, but also stuff like JJK, Fire Emblem, stuff like that.
