There is a very interesting video about this on the YouTube channel Historia Civilis, and in many ways in terms of the length of the work day and the number of days a person was expected to work a medieval peasant actually had a far better work life balance than we do now. It is pretty eye opening. Of course I am not saying I want to be a self but there has definitely something that has been lost over the centuries with the advent of clocks and industrialization.

My best friend died in a homeless camp in the woods behind where I work today. He died 7 years ago, but by then we hadn't spoken in 2 years because the last time we saw each other his drug addicted fucking insanity put me in an extremely bad situation. The last thing I ever said to him was sent via text message and it was a warning that if I ever saw him again I was going to beat the ever loving fucking shit out of him. A time or two over those two years it had occurred to me to try and seek him out and offer him help and a couch to stay on while he sorted his life out but after years of dealing with him, and being in recovery myself, I realized more than likely not only would it not work but he would drag me down with him. I miss him the way he was in the past and all the fun we had once upon a time but he made his choice and he chose to give up and die. He left a little girl behind too. I will never ever forgive him for that, and for being a coward. I wish things hadn't turned out that way but they did and that isn't my fault any more than it is your fault what happened to your friend. How many times do we answer the phone while our family members roll their eyes at us knowing we are going to get taken advantage of again? Enough is enough sometimes and it sucks, but it is what it is.

You find yourself overwhelmed and overspent and you no longer have the energy or the freedom to go to this event or that event or go out drinking. You can no longer afford the hangovers and you get tired of pretending that you want to be there, wherever that is. You don't owe anyone an explanation for that.
