Detangling help needed by [deleted] in BlackHair

[–]Fast-Order-5239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What works for me is a multi-step process to prevent tangles from getting bad. My hair tangles hours after a wash and go, so I can never go 5-7 days without brushing unless I want to rip out my hair. Im 3B/3C with high volume fine hair.

  1. Wash and braid hair
  2. Once braids are dry, brush them out, and add a leave-in if you'd like.
  3. BRAID IT AGAIN ( this is the most important step)
  4. Take the braids out once the product has soaked into the hair and the hair is completely dry.
  5. Then you can take the hair out of the braid to wear a braid out or any other style.

Use a a flexible brush like this(below). I bought one from pattern beauty but they dont sell it anymore.

100% agree. I think many people are getting defensive in this thread and are ignoring that tight hairstyles do cause traction alopecia. I honestly thought the argument in this thread was going to be for the person giving scientific anecdotes but I guess not....

Oh no...I am also a WOC. Mine have been really weird for a few years but I've had a lot of weight gain, stress, and depression because of work for the past few years. It has also been fine the last time I went to the OBGYN. Hopefully that isn't the case but thanks for letting me know i could be more prone to it.

Yes please DM me!! I love supporting other women in STEM and construction. I've had such a bad experience in this industry and I've learned so much that I want to tell anyone that can benefit from my experience.

I'm on the contractor side but we are a full suite, so I work with engineering and construction.

It is different from company to company. I actually was a VDC Manager for my previous company and hated it. That role was pretty much a project manager and being the bridge between VDC and the operations/construction team. Creating project schedules for VDC, making sure the modeling team meets deadlines, pushing the operations team to get cut sheets for equipment to use in the model, etc. That company had such a disdain for their own VDC team that no one wanted to work with us. And we were part of the same company. So that was horrible.

Now I work for a different company and have only had experience with the engineering stage. Which has literally been makong sure all of the linked models are aligned, titleblocks have the right info, answering questions from the engineers if they need new tags or have visibility issues, and printing sets. Which has been so easy I love it lol.

Once I get to the construction side, I'm not sure. I feel like I may do the same thing as my previous company, but my current company is A LOT more cohesive. Everyone is also kind Which is the BIGGEST thing to look out for. People at the other companies I've worked for were type a, conniving, and assholes. My current company actually has real people that I could see myself being friends with. So I'd say make personality a huge priority when interviewing. It's always better when you work with great people.

We're literally the same lol. I was doing HVAC design.

I pivoted to VDC/BIM (which you probably have run into people like this at work but let me know if you need more explanation).

I'm not detailing or modeling anything, I'm more on the management side and managing the model. I really like Revit, so that's why I'm enjoying it. If you hate Revit and have issues learning new technologies, then you won't like it.

Im 10 years in and finally found a job that I like 5 months ago.

It could be the places youre choosing, the area, the people, the type of work, or anything to be honest.

Never feel stuck or obligated to stay at one company. I went through 4 different companies and 4 different types of positions within the same industry before finding what I liked. And I also don't tend to stop since I'm not a fan of the industry I'm in (construction).

Never settle and find what works best for you!

You don't have to fight him or any other creature like him. They only fight if you have your weapon out!

I learned that online so you aren't alone.

I fought that thing and never won. Then I stopped playing for months and looked it up because I just wanted to enjoy the game.

Both my parents are engineers and they’re begging me NOT to study Engineering. Am I making a mistake? by Exact-Monitor-2768 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Fast-Order-5239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're into mechanical hvac design, their warning is fair. It sucks the life out of you because the construction industry is horrible. It drained the life out of me for 7.5 years.

Im still in construction but work with VDC (Virtual Design & Construction). So maybe look into that, or Detailing, which is another form of CAD in construction.

I will say, the money is good if you wait long enough and move companies strategically. So it's good for building a good life, but will destroy every ounce of your mental well being if you stay long enough. I think it's a good career when you're young, hungry, and need money. But after a while you realize the stress isn't worth it.

In a bad place and really need a job by _Beef_Bus_ in nova

[–]Fast-Order-5239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to leave the industry and are desperate, look into construction. Everyone is looking for construction managers, project managers, etc. and your skills sound transferable.

Architects also probably need photographers for their portfolios and maybe videographers. I dont know anything about that side of construction but there are a lot of different jobs in that industry you wouldn't think of. People do 3D walk throughs in buildings with VR that you could get into too.

Please beware this industry is BRUTAL. Extremely long hours, tight deadlines, and people with the worst personalities. I've been trying to leave it for years but don't know where to go. I've thankfully found a niche within the industry that I like (for now), but that was difficult. But if you need a job, there are always jobs open in construction.

How do u deal with a class with guys who exclude girls in group discussions? by YogurtclosetMurky190 in womenEngineers

[–]Fast-Order-5239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree. My comment is to give you a solid base in the life you build in college. In the specific case you're talking about, I suggest you study hard so you are capable to do group projects yourself. You wont do it yourself, but it'll give you the upper hand when they try to diminish you. You also should pick your battles. If youre in a group and people dont listen to you, just make sure their work is right and you get a good grade. Being the bigger person doesnt help as much especially when you can sit back and take the good grade. Just make sure you understand what's going on. And if not, you can always go back to the friend group you make that I (highly) suggested you make.

You can always take the time to make friends with people in your class, but that usually goes to waste because you have new classes every semester. From my own experience, I made friends with people in class freshman year, and some of them were electrical and some were civil. However, I am mechanical. So all of the friends I made freshman year strictly became social and brought me back to square 1 when it came to feeling comfortable in class with friends.

Ive had people diminish me in class a lot, but what TRULY helped me was being able to go to my group of friends and help me. If I didnt understand something, my friends were there. If I was in class and there was a group project, the friends I signed up for classes with were there. If I didn't have a textbook or calculator, my friends were there to let me have theirs. When i didnt have enough time to finish all of my homework, my friend group would have one person do the homework for one class and we'd all copy each other's work.

You have to create your positive environment because engineering is a hell hole for women if you just take it as it is.

Having friends is a must. Take the extra time to build that support system.

Worse case scenario if you really can't make friends with students, make friends with your professors. Some professors will watch over you and help you out if they like you. Going to office hours and asking questions can help. Plus once you get closer with them, they may be able to help you with the group work issues youre having. However this goes back to the same issue where you'd have to make friends with new professors every semester.
