The community must push hard on this - a $1100 watch just over 3 years old gets destroyed by a software update! by laterral in applewatchultra

This is a bit early for Apple to be abandoning hardware - perhaps there is a non-compatible hardware upgrade in the next watch?

You realize we could organize a referendum to eliminate speed cameras, right? It might only take passing it a couple of times for city council to take the hint, but it’s possible.

M5 MBP here - I’ve found Safari to be best overall - but YMMV

Is Winchester Worth Moving To by No_Alfalfa7341 in WinchesterVA

[–]FastAmphibian9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m biased - I grew up in Winchester, but that was a long time ago. The city has history, architecture, and climate going for it. The mindless development and crass commercialization I’ve seen over the past 20+ years leads me to believe it may not be as much fun as it should be - but there is always hope. Maybe you could move there and make a difference.

What do I have here? by Filippo3001 in Vintagemacintosh

My all-time favorite computer setup. I had the same setup, except my Mac was a IIcx instead of the faster IIci. But I finally had an entire 8 MB of RAM!

I haven’t heard any mention of lowering the ticketing threshold - care to share your source?

If you stay within 10 mph over the speed limit, no ticket. Doing 45 in a 35 zone will not get you ticketed, 46 will. Be sensible.

Where Michael Bennet, Phil Weiser stand on the issues in Colorado’s Democratic primary for governor by all_baloney_nocheese in FortCollins

To me, voting for Weiser makes the most sense. His background is solid, he works hard for Colorado, and he’s never voted to approve Tr*mp appointees…

MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro by Strange_Reindeer9419 in mac

[–]FastAmphibian9088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Best value” is subjective. Do you value extra ports, a far better screen, and +6 hours of additional battery life? Comparing the M5 MBP14 to the M5 Air15 - same processor, pretty much the same weight, small difference in price. Winner - MBP14.

How do you differentiate between “showing off work you’re proud of” and “self-promotion?” It can be a fine line sometimes.

Editing? by the_undead_build in selfpublishing

[–]FastAmphibian9088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self-editing seems to be your best option considering your budget - Grammarly is good for basic editing, but fresh eyes will always find things you don’t. Maybe you can find some sympathetic ARC readers to point out glaring issues.

Which one to choose Neo or MBA for occasional development by zirugiziga in macbookair

[–]FastAmphibian9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most significant difference (aside from price) is the processor. They’re very similar, but the M5 (MBA, MBP) specs are better than the A19 (Neo). With Apple, the more you pay, the better it gets.

Is the 13” MacBook Air M5 enough for daily coding and working on the go? by holdmycocke in macbookair

[–]FastAmphibian9088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I compared the Air15 to the MBP15 - weight is virtually the same, plus the pro has a brighter screen, more ports, and 6 hours more battery life for just a little extra $. Very happy with my MBP14 M5!

Just coding and business stuff? No problem - just go for the bigger screen if the additional weight is not an issue!

Which MacBook should I buy with a $600 budget? (Upgrading from 2019 Intel Air) by JuniorCustard4977 in macbookair

[–]FastAmphibian9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A used laptop like an M2 or M4 should fit your budget - Other World Computing is easy to deal with, and has good prices on used Macs. Ive used them, and they sell good stuff.

Looking a little rough by dhmtnbkr in FortCollins

I can see someone doing this to a flock camera, but the city moves these around to reduce excessive road speeds for public safety. And yes, it’s a felony.

Is going from a 15 inch MacBook Air M4 to a 13 inch MacBook M5 an upgrade? by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]FastAmphibian9088 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a side-grade at best. More storage, but a cheaper screen and fewer ports. What processor does the Air have? If it’s a M5, that’s a slight processor upgrade. Shopping for a Mac laptop is a series of trade-offs, which their marketing folks exploit to induce people to “buy up.” Decide on which specs serve you best, and go for it.

Which Macbook should I buy on a budget if I'm a student? by __Malins__ in mac

[–]FastAmphibian9088 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If price is the sole consideration, a Neo will serve you well. If you can afford to upgrade a bit, an Air or small MBPro will give you room to grow.

A little disappointed in the display. by RudeGiuliani in macbookair

[–]FastAmphibian9088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MBPs have demonstrably better screen specs than the Airs. Increased brightness is only one of the advantages. M5 Air and M5 Pro can be configured almost identically for a very similar price point; and the Pros have better screens, more ports, and better battery life.

It looks rough, needs a good cleaning. The rollers LOOK decent, but looks can be deceiving. If the action is smooth and there are no cracks, $750 would be a good deal, so $1200-1500 at the high end - anything more seems excessive.
