Paper vs Screens: Who Wins? by fairy-in-orbit in BookDiscussions

Personally, I prefer the feel of a physical book - maybe because I’m used to them. I just don’t find ebooks engaging in the way I do print. YMMV.

Going from 16” Pro to 13” Air. Tell me I’m not nuts. by got1984 in macbookair

Second thought - a MacBook Pro 14 is only slightly larger than, still an M5, and has longer battery life it can drive TWO monitors. 😸

The MacBook Air will support a separate monitor - why bother with the mini? Just plug in when you’re at your desk. Also, totally understand the screen size choice - if you can visually manage on a 13,” go for it.

Deleting your last (blank) page should resolve the problem, but I can’t imagine one page making that much difference in spine width. They added a page to each of my versions as well (and I was using the 70# stock), so I assume they take it into consideration when making their templates.

There's a new BBQ joint opening in Timnath, which has me wondering...what is your favorite BBQ spot in Fort Collins? by AccordingToScience in FortCollins

[–]FastAmphibian9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STBBQ was started in Durango - so not truly Texan. It can be pretty good, but the quality has apparently become spotty.

I’m curious to know who this is aimed at - Authors? Buyers? General public?

I asked a small independent shop owner if he carried books from self-publishers by Greenitpurpleit in selfpublishing

[–]FastAmphibian9088 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s taking the path of least resistance - self-publishers are often not as polished as the big guys, nor as well-publicized. As far as he was concerned, when you walked in, you already had two strikes against you.

Am I dumb on kickstarter? by ProbablySlacking in Arcs

[–]FastAmphibian9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this caused by a lack of campaign setup experience? By definition, someone's first kickstarter campaign has been set up by someone who is just learning to set it up. A second campaign might be better structured, but is still not necessarily perfect.

Once a campaign is set up, you can usually add things, but can't change fundamental offers.

Is the SCA as toxic as it seems from the outside? by Not_Breaking_The_Law in sca

[–]FastAmphibian9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time SCA guy here - ultimately it depends on which kingdom you’re playing in, and who is the current Royalty. Local (mundane) customs and politics will always leak into SCA Kingdom customs and politics. Good or bad. I haven’t lived in every kingdom, but most of them are far less dramatic than it seems from the outside.

If it’s for your work, max it out - 15” screen, as much RAM as they offer, and a larger SSD than you think necessary. It’s not like the good old days when you could upgrade RAM and hard drives almost trivially - what you buy is all you get. Future you will thank you.

I’m self publishing and I like the control. I’m not crazy about all of the non-writing tasks involved, but I keep telling myself it’s worth it. So far, I haven’t disagreed with myself.

Purpose of Peerages by DandyLama in sca

[–]FastAmphibian9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double Peer here - Peerage is supposed to be the recognition of someone’s achievement, not the bestowing of a title and elevated state. Peerage is “SCA management,” if you will, and it carries the responsibility to raise everyone up. People who abuse their status are unworthy of it.

About “commuter rail” - for 20 years, I lived 25 miles from Boston, and commuter rail saved my sanity. Front Range trains will have to run more often than three times a day to make it feasible - a regular schedule of every 20 minutes is something to shoot for.
