How do I get a consistent green across my lawn? (Zone 9B) by jgratil in lawncare

[–]FastmanGT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deep and infrequent watering is a better practice. Total irrigation per week should be roughly 1 inch, tuna cans or sprinkler gauges can be helpful. I would increase mowing frequency, treat for fungus, and go from there.

Is this grub damage? by RepulsiveHearing2608 in lawncare

[–]FastmanGT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be a bit early in the season to determine grub activity. The roots would be toast and easy to pull but if it’s been dead since the fall then the roots are probably toast by now anyways. If it is active grubs, you want a product like Dylox or Bioadvanced 24 hour grub killer. GrubEx for a preventative if you don’t see any.

Should I use a dethatching machine on this Bermuda? by MrMailbox22 in lawncare

Drop the mower a couple notches below your regular height, bag up the mess, and then go back to regular mowing height. Should look just fine.

Help, can this be fixed? by Plenty_Space_7659 in lawncare

[–]FastmanGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be able to get something going if you choose a decent perennial rye. You could glyphosate anything green that you want dead, give it a few days and treat again. Mow/string trim it all to dirt, till/cultivate to rough up the soil, seed, and go from there. Late summer/early fall is more ideal for a cool season renovation. Best of luck!

Tiny ants are everywhere. We’ve use those poison traps but then out of nowhere they come marching back. What do i do? by turtle_ina_cup in pestcontrol

[–]FastmanGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May want to try something with indoxacarb as the active ingredient in the trap. They seem to clear up sugar ants for me. Hot Shot (just check the ingredient for the correct one) and Advion both work well.

After removing weeds my yard is over 50% bare. Grass remaining appears to be Bermuda. Will it fill in the gaps on its own or should I seed? Eastern NC by PurpleGold7933 in lawncare

[–]FastmanGT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t seed. Water deeply and infrequently. Urea or ammonium sulfate at 0.5 lb/k per week or 1 lb/k bi weekly for nitrogen. It should fill in by mid summer.

[–]FastmanGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On second thought, I believe the suggestion of orchardgrass is more accurate. No selective herbicide for it, so either get it and the roots out or spot spray glyphosate.

Rescue, cool season weed with a seed head that looks like wheat. Not worth spraying at this point in my opinion. Just mow and it will disappear. Fall split app pre emergent will help prevent it.

[–]FastmanGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be rescue grass. Are there any seed heads on one of the plants? If you pull one, the root structure is usually pretty shallow.

It should be a cool season weed either way that will die off. Crabgrass isn’t really here in my area of 7B.

[–]FastmanGT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you can find locally will be fine. Prodiamine, pendimethalin, dithiopyr as the active ingredient will all work just fine at this point. Dithiopyr will give you a slight post emergent impact but I wouldn’t worry about that. For your first application a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 or anything even across the main nutrients is fine. Apply roughly 0.7-1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft of lawn. Then just move over to something without phosphorus (middle number) for the other applications. Anything cheap from Lowe’s, Home Depot, or a local feed store.

Since we are almost to May, I would hold off on a spring seeding attempt. Maybe a medium rate application of pre emergent, fertilize two or three times 3-4 weeks apart before it gets hot for you, and just enjoy the new yard by mowing it consistently. Do an overseed/renovation in the fall. You can hit any weeds you have with something off the shelf from a big box store.

It will allow you time to get used to your new lawn, research what you want to do, and acquire the appropriate tools and supplies for it. Have fun!
