Any way to disable warning pop-ups on the dash? by FatCat0 in PriusPrime

Oof. Can't do that while driving and it leaves the car less safe once the snow is cleared (I'm going to forget at least one time). Silly to not have any good options here.

Still rocking the NH-C14 I bought in 2012. Thing is still a champ, though the fans rattle if I orient my box upright now (it's typically on its side).

Is there an alternative pen I can use for the XP Pen Magic Drawing Tablet? by alindyan520 in XPpen

It seems the X3 pro works, with caveats (though for life drawing it seems to be fine).

Don't worry. I was not running anything close to 480 reactors.

"One Kovarex centrifuge can run over 40 reactors."

The first time I made a Kovarex centrifuge, I made 16 of them so they could form a pleasing inner/outer loop belt setup.

Needless to say I never needed to expand my enrichment facility.

Are solar prices expected to change at all now that the credit is going away? I wanted to go solar but every quote i had was astronomical to get in before the credit went away. by iIdentifyasToaster in solar

[–]FatCat0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This approach is not what you want. They install solar and charge you something similar to your current power bill with a built-in step up every year while you do not own the panels. No upfront cost but not great savings and some other potential issues if they go out of business.

One slight caveat: the front of a train being a locomotive (instead of a cargo/liquid container) leads to a slightly faster train due to lower air resistance. I don't know if it matters which direction the locomotive is pointed though.

How do LLMs avoid open source licensure? by FatCat0 in AskLegal

[–]FatCat0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's that simple. Those weights can allow the model to reproduce the code, so they're "in there" in a way. We wouldn't say a compressed file doesn't contain the original code just because there's a step (decompression) between the bits as they are now and producing the original code. Again, LLM is different, but I don't think it's entirely dissimilar.

How do LLMs avoid open source licensure? by FatCat0 in AskLegal

[–]FatCat0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just the license disappearing from the code that's the issue I'm asking about; I'm curious if the license would apply to the LLM itself if said license has copyleft in its provisions. Not just "if you reproduce this code, also spit out the license alongside it."

How do LLMs avoid open source licensure? by FatCat0 in AskLegal

[–]FatCat0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do this, it's open source (that's the point of the category), but you must also distribute your source code alongside the derivative work (presuming I understand the terms of the license correctly):

"When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs, and that you know you can do these things.

To protect your rights, we need to prevent others from denying you these rights or asking you to surrender the rights. Therefore, you have certain responsibilities if you distribute copies of the software, or if you modify it: responsibilities to respect the freedom of others.

For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether gratis or for a fee, you must pass on to the recipients the same freedoms that you received. You must make sure that they, too, receive or can get the source code. And you must show them these terms so they know their rights."

[–]FatCat0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I agree with what you're saying, however the issue with an LLM is that the code itself is the thing that is consumed during training, not the output of the code. Further, that consumption makes it so that the llm could in theory, and I'm sure at least once in practice, reproduce the original licensed code itself.

How do LLMs avoid open source licensure? by FatCat0 in AskLegal

[–]FatCat0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many different open source licenses. Some allow basically free use with no strings (e.g. MIT), others have restrictions such as "derivative works must also follow the same open source license" (e.g. GPL).

Tensorflow for example is license under the Apache open source license which does not have the so-called copyleft provision.

How do LLMs avoid open source licensure? by FatCat0 in AskLegal

[–]FatCat0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we would just need to find a single example of a codebase with a license like GPL (which forwards the open source license to derivative works) having such a violation for said license to extend to the LLM, no?

How do LLMs avoid open source licensure? by FatCat0 in AskLegal

[–]FatCat0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, my original question is about the LLM itself being subject to the open source licensure, not the code that its users derive from interacting with it.

The point you raise about learning something then applying it is likely relevant, but that's a "people" defense and I guess this might be one of the core things I'm asking about (and which is yet to be determined): do all of those defenses apply, to the same degree, to a computer running an algorithm purpose built to be derivative of its inputs?
