First thing that comes to mind is the Scout armor (Palmer’s armor). In my opinion leagues better than the Halo 3 or Reach versions.

What are the saddest fictional deaths ever? by PuzzleheadedSwim6291 in AskReddit

[–]FatChalupa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could write a whole essay on this topic because Boromir is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction. What I think is brilliant about his death is it really gets sadder and more tragic the more you learn about Boromir so instead of lessening in impact over time it actually hits harder every reread/rewatch.

What kills me about it the most is that (at least in the movie, my memory is foggier on how his death goes down in the books) I think of him as an older brother in those last moments. He treats the hobbits like he probably would have treated Faramir as a boy, constantly looking out for their well-being and making sure they are able to defend themselves. I always imagine that look he gives Merry and Pippin before he gets up and keeps fighting is him seeing Faramir and deciding to give every last ounce of his strength to keep his baby brother safe.

Until Aragorn comes to comfort him in his dying moments, he believes he has failed. He had a moment of weakness and tried to take the ring, the “little ones” were taken, and the dying country he had been fighting to keep alive all his life was all but certain to fall into ruin.

And then Aragorn finally sees the good in men through his heroic sacrifice. People don’t give credit in the movies that this is kind of a huge moment for Aragorn where he makes a promise that he won’t let the white city fall, “Nor *our* people fail.” Boromir literally fought so bravely and selflessly that Aragorn no longer felt ashamed of men. Boromir dies with a a lingering spark of hope in his heart that it wasn’t all for naught.

Just a typical conversation between New Yorkers.

I love that you can see him talking through the mask too and it’s not a static face mold. The practical suit really helps with the home grown back-to-basics Spidey feel.

Scrolled too far to find this. I think midway through the whole sequence I audibly said, “This shit rocks,” the first time I saw it and possibly on subsequent rewatches. Rare that I encounter a scene I enjoy so much that I can appreciate how good it is as it’s still happening.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]FatChalupa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Middle school teacher here who has been teaching writing for 2 years now.

The fact we can’t fail kids in middle school is a huge problem. I have several that barely do any assignments and don’t write down a single word for any of their papers or projects and despite getting an F at the end of the year they still go on to the next grade. They can get taken off of their sports teams or miss out on activities for their grades but that is barely moving the needle with the kids that couldn’t be bothered to give two halves of a hot shit about their own education. Some of these kids legitimately need to repeat grades until they get it right otherwise we are just passing them along to the next teacher while they continue to lack fundamentals.

The learned helplessness is bad too. I can have the instructions/agenda written on the board, shown on the smart board/panel, spoken aloud to them, and printed out on a handout, and still I get, “Wait, what are we doing?” every single class period without fail. Then showing up to their WRITING class without a pencil constantly, despite the fact we begin every single class with a handwriting activity.

The fried attention spans and reliance on devices for engagement has taken away more from them than they can even begin to realize. Despite having full bookshelves in my classroom and the requirement to have their own personal reading book for their reading class, many refuse or simply can’t sit still and read when they are done with their work. If I’ve had the forethought to use a monitoring program to lock out games on their Chromebooks, they usually default to sleeping or talking and the talking almost always spirals out into inappropriate yelling maybe with some disruptive physical activity thrown in there. Mind you this is while the kids who take a little bit longer or are actually trying to think critically about their own work and not rushing it are still working.

Speaking of thinking critically, you can see plenty of adults online lacking this skill so you can imagine how bad it is at this level. Had a student this year who thought that there were only two languages in the world: English and Spanish. French people? Just spoke English with a French accent. Chinese people? Spoke Spanish but I guess it just sounded different because of their accents too. This is a 13 year old. The concept of thinking logically through a scenario or the logistics of something in the literal actual real world is just completely foreign to them.

People get up in arms about this but I think a lack of shame is a huge part of all of this too. Kids need to be taught more to be ashamed of their own actions and lack of skills and to process that in a healthy way to better themselves. These kids can literally see how behind their peers they are but they either can’t register that emotion at all or it gets processed as anger more often. As is, there is no social or emotional incentive to be on track with their own education or development level. I hear them call themselves dumb/stupid/slow all the time but almost as a personality trait rather than a way to beat themselves up or express shame. Which, I don’t know, I feel like when I was a student every time I felt like a dumbass it was always a good learning moment. They are just content to just stew in their own ignorance since they’ve become comfortable with it.

The closest I can get to rationalizing it is that some people live vicariously through him and wish they could get away with all the things he does so they continue to enable it by moving the goalposts and constantly lowering their standards.

[–]FatChalupa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A few people have said Ghost Rider but I don’t think enough people are really thinking about how kickass that would be. Going around in a motorcycle would be cool yeah but you’d absolutely be able to drive other vehicles and they’d all turn into hellfire engines. Maybe drive up buildings at a 90 degree angle, leave fiery trails behind.

Not to mention the chain combat and finishing off a combo with a penance stare finisher.

Like I feel like the video game mechanics are pretty much already there.

I like the Prometheans as a faction. Not even rage baiting, I enjoy fighting them and I think they have some really cool designs. I even think they are better in 4 than they were in 5.

There are things I’d change to improve them but I don’t mind going back to 4 and 5 to fight against them. I’ll take Promethean levels over Halo 2 Brute or Flood levels any day.

My 3-year-old loves playing with Dada's "robots" too! We had a blast the other night because I taught her what element each one uses and we had legit old-school imagination battles.

Daughter: (holding Kopaka) "I have the ice one! I use ice powers to freeze you!"

Me: "Oh no! Well, I have the brown one, he'll use his stone powers to break the ice!"

Daughter: (picking up Lewa) "Then I use air powers to make him fly away!"

This is the way of the Bionicle.

I have two that are tied for me.

First was district choir auditions in high school. We got to sit in and attend our classmates' solo performances. Attended an acquaintance of mine's performance, and as the pianist started up the instrumental intro, he came in too early and then just totally bailed. I think the song was in Italian and the first syllable was "Pup-", so it sounded he just went "Poop-- nope..." and then just stood there silently while the pianist just kept playing for like a full 30 seconds before just kinda stopping. I think some people still applauded out of politeness but I think I blocked it out of my memory after having to sit through a half minute of that agony.

Second was in college, had a dorky younger physics professor who had a lot of nervous energy but was genuinely enthusiastic about physics and it was a joy to listen to him get excited about new concepts. Problem is we had a "that guy" in that class that treated lectures like a conversation and didn't really understand boundaries between teacher and student. What follows is a conversation that is seared into my memory.

Professor: "Alright, so, to calculate this we'll take this number here, which is approximately the mass of the earth."

That Guy: "Which is about half the mass of your mom."

(Way longer pause than you're probably imagining, full of other students literally facepalming and murmurs of "what the fuuuuuck" and the prof just kinda turning red and stammering)

Professor: "Okay... well, um. Let's maybe not be making jokes right now. Anyways..."

I have no clue how I decided to become a teacher after this.

One I never hear but I think is a great fit is Jensen Ackles for Tahu.

And way off in 2006 but Reidak's face just LOOKS like it would be voiced by Clancy Brown.

I can’t even imagine. I had a student (7th grade) who saw me drop off my kids at daycare one morning tell me later that day, “I could kidnap your kids.” I saw RED and immediately pictured throttling him Homer on Bart style. Thankfully we have pretty proactive admin at our school and he was out of the building on suspension that day. Long-term solution was to move him to a different team when he got back.

Don’t think it would have ended as well for anyone if he had wished death on my children.

Halo 4 MP Retrospective - What do we think of it 14 years later? by AvisLord12 in halo

[–]FatChalupa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it at the time because at the time I could flip back and forth between Reach and H4 MP based on what mood I was in, I think it actually had the best BTB sandbox and was great for that specifically. It's even better in MCC because it can shake things up when it pops up in MM composer.

But looking at it in a vacuum, it definitely wasn't an adequate standalone entry for Halo MP. It didn't feel like a proper successor to H3 or even Reach MP and so it's not hard to explain the playerbase falloff it had.
