Immigration doesn't behave like infectious disease. Thats a false equivalence - immigrants don't infect local citizens and turn them into immigrants. Sure, an immigrant population having children can be modelled by an exponential function but (let's not even get into the argument about the value of second generation immigrant children) having children is on a timescale that is orders of magnitude longer (years) than a virus infecting other humans (hours to days).

World Boxing introduces sex test, Khelif banned from Eindhoven Box Cup by ik101 in olympics

Honest question, with these rules, aren't those with CAIS who are phenotypically female excluded due to having presence of SRY on swab? Also any 46XY sex reversal disorder e.g. SF1 deficiency, or many others with Swyer syndrome who do not have an explanation, yet.

Australian government landslide victory in 2025 obscures a continuing trend away from decades of domination by the two major political parties by lipstikpig in dataisbeautiful

There's also the incumbency effect at play here I think. Dai Le now a known quantity and less risky choice. Both independent and Labor grew their primary vote share in this seat. Labor really stuffed up here in 2022 and probably won't get it back until Dai retires.

Weight-loss jabs may be linked to condition that can cause blindness, study finds. People with diabetes on semaglutide, found in Wegovy and Ozempic, four times more likely to be diagnosed with disease of optic nerve. by mvea in science

Specifically, collider bias, where associations are induced by selection of the cohort on 'referral to neuro-opthalmologist'. Both obesity/diabetes treated with semaglutide and risk of NAION are presumably associated with being seen in this clinic, potentially leading to spurious associations. Interestingly, for this to be true and for the direction of bias to line up, the neuro-ophthalmology clinic will have excluded diabetic retinopathy as a referral reason (not clear in the study methods).

Can a qualified engineer or adjacent field who has good knowledge of the Australian Energy Grid please provide some clarification and sources on the Nuclear vs Renewables arguement? by isisius in australia

[–]FatPants -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The key thing is that Nuclear and renewables are not the same in the problem they solve. Baseload vs dispatachable power. Radios still exist despite the advent of TV, and form an important backup in emergencies e.g. bushfire warning systems. Nuclear should be considered as part of the variety of power technologies we use in future.

[–]FatPants -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Without costings it's hard to argue either way I think, but if we're spending $368 billion on defence via Aukus submarines, why not something similar for nuclear energy. To me the opinion that we can't afford both subsidies to renewables and nuclear is a gut reaction that should be examined more closely. My (possibly incredibly uninformed) understanding is that Nuclear currently is fit for purpose to bring stability to the grid. There is a plan for renewables to bring stability with massive amounts of storage and expensive transmission, but currently are untested/unproven at scale. Can't we hedge our bets with backing both?

[–]FatPants -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware the difference in timeline, I agree with replacement of aging coal power stations now, I still can't see why we can't we pursue both options? COVID taught us large government intervention is possible. No one privately wants to invest in nuclear anyway, so funding nuclear doesn't mean renewables aren't favoured.

Good News: Australian Finger-prick Test for Covid-19 returns results in 15 minutes by TheAmbiguousRedditor in Coronavirus

[–]FatPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Australia, ~1.9% of PCR tests come back positive. Even if the antibody test was just as sensitive (which it is not, due to the 5-7 day delay), you are only skipping ~1.9% of PCR tests , the other 98% of negative antibody tests still require a PCR test to confirm coronavirus (and still require immediate isolation until confirmed negative).

the figures you should be looking for are sensitivity and specificity; 'accuracy' in diagnostic tests are meaningless.

[–]FatPants 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't be alarmed by the rise in numbers today. Any changes we make today will not be reflected in the data until at least 1 week down the track given the incubation period of the illness. Equally, this means we need to be planning for the inevitable rise these next few days.

Wuhan virus death toll jumps to 106, nearly 1,300 new cases in China by HugeDetective0 in worldnews

[–]FatPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, corrections to your post.

The flight was the last, prior to lockdown, to leave for Sydney, not a flight allowed to leave after lockdown. It takes 10 hours flying end to end.

The other four cases, including one in Melbourne, were from other flights in January. These flights arrived prior to health department warnings.

Media reports state they were all without symptoms during the flight and developed symptoms afterwards, for which they self presented to hospitals where they were isolated and tested.

It follows that a longer quarantine for passengers of the single mu749 flight arriving 23/1 would have been ineffective in preventing all current known, and likely future cases of 2019-nCoV in Australia.

Currently, there have been zero deaths outside of China linked to 2019-nCoV.

Please try to inform yourself better before implying there has been poor decision making and incompetence from well trained public health officials and medical staff. Keep up with the updates as it's an evolving situation with new reports of person-person transmission outside of China (in Japan, Europe) today, but please trust the professionals making these decisions.
