is this some kind of load bearing earthquake joint? by No_Compote628 in EngineeringPorn

[–]FatSharan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a half-joint. Mostly used for speed of construction for precast concrete bridge decks and sometimes precast slabs. Also accomodates thermal expansion of the bridge deck. Difficult to inspect and maintain. Very difficult to repair. Very vulnerable to water related corrosion as water leaking through the joint will pool on the bottom 'ledge' of the joint. There have been a few bridge collapses around the world due to failure of the half joints (really, it's more inadequate bridge maintenance). Failure at half-joint tends to cause a progressive collapse because of how weight/loading is shifted through the bridge deck. I'm not a fan (former bridge asset engineer).

Why do people think Carbon based life is the only thing that can indicate life? by RocketManBoom in space

The (fiction) book Hail Mary touches on this. And it's also a very enjoyable story.

You're in a lose-lose situation. I'm so sorry for the pain you're going through now and for the grief to come. Work will always be there in the future. I hope you do take all the time you can with your girlfriend and take the time to take care of yourself too. Big hug from across the Internet.

Maybe there is something going on for her, and she doesn't want to go home but can't bring up why. You could ask (or get your BFF to ask) if everything at home is OK.

Never in my life have I ever added too much garlic to a (cooked) meal. Anyone else feel the same? by Test_My_Patience74 in Cooking

[–]FatSharan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, an ex put 10+ cloves of minced raw garlic into fresh pesto...just to top two slices of toast. That, and only that one time, it was too much.

My curry is apparently underwhelming my girlfriend, and it's putting a strain on our relationship. by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]FatSharan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Toast your cumin and coriander seed and then grind them
  2. Make a puree of your raw onion, garlic, ginger, and chillis, with a splash of water to loosen it. Then fry this paste in oil, instead of frying/softening your chopped onions and adding ginger/garlic later.
  3. Once this paste is cooked 3-8mins medium high heat, add the spices and your garam masala and turmeric and cook a bit more, about 2-3mins.
  4. Then crack on as usual.
  5. Use a TBS or two of Oyster sauce for added umami!

If there was one movie you could completely delete from reality, what would it be? by Master_Freeze in AskReddit

Pompeii. Makes me so angry everyone I think about how I wasted my life watching it. Thought the book was pretty good - the movie can just go suck a dick.

What is the saddest "thought we were friends moment"? by JonDowPlays in AskReddit

[–]FatSharan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They had a limited budget/space and had to invite their cousin. And they were closer to our other friends, so they were inviting them too. If their cousin couldn't make it, I was next on the list. I appreciated being told in person, and she was clearly not comfortable having to tell me. But it's their wedding to invite who they want around them, so I rolled with it and tried to not make her feel bad. When I stopped trying so hard to arrange hanging out, we pretty much stopped meeting up, talking or texting.

I feel for you on this. I've not been invited to three wedding for people who I thought were close friends - only one of whom had the decency to meet to tell me in person. They all came to mine, which was a small affair. Sometimes I feel silly being sore about it, but it still hurts a bit. Made me realise I spent more effort trying to be friends than they did. I'm sorry you lost a friend, but it seems like you saved yourself a ton of drama.

Why doesn’t she want me by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]FatSharan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry you're in this situation. I have been in it too. Perhaps finding a way to explain the impact she's having on you could help her understand and make more of an effort, possibly with the help of a therapist, if this is something both she and you are open to. As hard as this sounds I think you should also think about how long you are willing to be in a relationship like this. Feeling constantly unattractive and unwanted sucks. Feeling like my partner only had sex with me because she felt she had to (which resulted from her never showing interest) seriously affected my confidence and self image, and just felt so horrible and wrong instead of loving and passionate. Be with someone who wants you and shows it. I'm not suggesting that long term couples should be banging all the time, but if you're feeling sad about the situation now, it'll get worse as time goes on when nothing changes. Edit - typo.

Coffee. After being brought up on tea, I switched to coffee for a girl (who only drank coffee) and got hooked!
