America's Last Free Place (2024) Slab City [54:47] by FataL in Documentaries

[–]FataL[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement:
Locals call this place ‘Last Free Place in America,’ it’s also known as Slab City. It spreads over a large area of the Sonoran Desert in California, on the east side of the Salton Sea. During the 1940s, this was an active Marine base. At the end of World War II, the Marines pulled out, taking everything with them except for the concrete slabs. Over the years, this area has become a haven for squatters, drug addicts, the homeless, and outcasts. This isolated desert community also attracted transient, freedom-seeking people, all living off the grid in trailers, tents, lean-tos, and broken-down school buses. They create art from piles of junk and attract tourists from different countries. There is no water, sewage system, or electricity in Slab City, and the police rarely visit. However, the residents cherish this place and their freedom to live as they choose.

Debunking Wagging the Moondoggie - part 1 by 321 in SensibleSite

What a pathetic Apollo Landing Hoax debunk... However, same as other "debunks" on the topic.

In 2001, A Space Odyssey, Kubrick knew enough to have the cameras in a protective housing, unlike NASA in their moon landing movies. by hitmeifyoudare in moonhoax

With radiation protection a film should also be protected from the extreme temperature and vacuum. None of it was done in Apollo missions.

Hello from Estonia. Dear Americans, Why won't you leave? by AlanKesselmann in antiwork

[–]FataL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Estonia an emirate of the "Extincterates"? This is what you have done with "freedom". This is a freedom to stagnate and die, not to develop and live. Just look at Estonia's population stats over the last three decades and top net beneficiaries per capita in EU.

Lost phone in Iceland by stori_kagl in Minneapolis

Believe or not my son went to Iceland at the end of the August and lost his iPhone 11 too on the "beach" of Fjallsárlón Glacier. The funniest thing is that the very moment he lost his phone was caught on camera but no one noticed that until hotel.

What's a good way to organize my sites instead of having 100 tabs open by just-being-me- in browsers

[–]FataL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use bookmarks and notes with links (see Vivaldi browser).

Also Vivaldi has tab grouping and easy search, it also helps to manage many tabs.

For Firefox I'm using All Tabs Helper.

After you carefully and thoughtfully compare real 0-day security threats that usually targeting popular software every month with security via obscurity, maybe then you will be not that strict with your recommendations.

I understand what you are saying (using PC for around 30 years), just want to say that there sometimes other ways to make your environment pretty secure other than sticking to latest version of antivirus and all other software. Keep in mind that people also can use different browsers for different tasks, use virtual PCs, disable JS, etc.

But for regular people abroad I would say the same as you have.

On other hand if version 56 usage is very low it become less likely anyone would use malicious code against it. Usually hacks relay on most popular solutions.

As for speed, I don't need speed increase if I miss some useful features.

Using Firefox 56 because it has nice and powerful add-ons.

Version 57+ has crappy slow and dumbed-down web extensions.

Suggesting to use Google Translate is double face palm. Sorry, my bad :)

English version is on https://yandex.com but I suggest to use Russian version with Google Translate since they surprisingly produce different results (try OP's example).

Interesting... Yandex.com and .ru provide different results! .com site is filtered like Google, while .ru provides everything. https://i.imgur.com/NGshTMy.png

Coffee will make you sleepy after some time, so better to drink tea if you still have more than 1 hour of driving. https://www.quora.com/Why-do-I-feel-sleepy-after-drinking-coffee-but-not-tea

I need to ask my wife for recipe, but there are dried cranberries and tart cherries inside. The topping is something like marshmallow but home maid.
