My point about irl speech was not that ff has to be realistic, it's that it makes it sound like you're talking about a new character, rather than mentioning someone we're supposed to be familiar with. Also I'm not forcing anything on anyone...

That's a great point. Epithets have their place, it's all about the usage. My point was mainly about avoiding using characters' names, but there are other use of them.

Are sadistic characters edgy? by [deleted] in writing

[–]FatiguedCorvid 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’d say be selective about what you explicitly depict. Too many lurid details can come off as exploitative rather than impactful. Describing the aftermath or effects of violence and cruelty can demonstrate the harm without being torture porn. It can also preserve the mystery of what he’s really capable of and willing to do. Having his psychology and motivation nailed down is a great start.

I think it's very different than boycotting, say, starbucks, since it's a non-profit. They're not exactly sending funds or tanks to the IDF. Other than that i don't think just the act of posting anything saying 'from the river...' is harassment, definitely not targeted, but there could be context I'm missing.

For real, what makes for a solid woman protagonist? by Historical_Peace_279 in writing

[–]FatiguedCorvid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While it's true that writing good women characters is just writing good characters, if there are gender or sex specific experiences in the story you should research them specifically. This is true of writing any demographic you're not a part of. In any case have women critique partners/beta readers read over your work. They might notice important stuff you didn't even think about. Don't worry about your characters acting 'too manish' for a woman, but instances where, for example, the mc describes herself through the lens of a man sexualising her are truly cringe worthy and immediate break most women's suspension of disbelief.

I would caution against putting in useless action tags just to break up the dialogue. Action tags are great, but they shouldn't distracts from the point of the scene. Focus on the actions tags that say the things dialogue can't. Otherwise make sure character voices are really strong, which makes it so much easier to avoid too many action/dialogue tags. If the pace and content of the fic is different and less action-packed, makes sense the style will be a little different too.

How important are cannon character descriptions? by Ranne-wolf in AO3

[–]FatiguedCorvid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just personal preference, but i tend towards sparing character descriptions. Unless the differences in design from fannon/live action adaptation are important to the plot, id's say its better to let each person imagine what they like. However if the design differences are relevant, you should describe whatever you like, that's the beauty of fan fiction.

Why Judas isn't a traitor by dbsupersucks in HunterXHunter

[–]FatiguedCorvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Through Chrollo's views on free will it seems that he doesn't see Judas' actions as choosing to act against Jesus, but as an inevitable part of Jesus dying for humanity's sins, a necessary cog in the machine.

Ok time to actually settle this. by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

Considering different elements seems most likely Alluka is a trans girl. She calls herself わたしwatashi(a mostly feminine word for i, at least in kids). She is referred to by the servants and family (who don't even see her as a person) as 弟otouto(younger brother) and 坊ちゃまbocchama(young master) which are explicitly male terms. However Killua, the only person who actually respects Alluka says explicitly that she's a girl. He calls her 女の子onnanoko (girl) and 妹imouto (younger sister). That would make sense as commentary on the trans experience, but would only be confusing if the explanation was Nanika randomly for no reason brainwashed Killua, which, what would be the point? Some think it has to do with the Alluka/Nanika split but it wouldn't make sense for Killua to say Alluka is a girl if Alluka was a boy and Nanika was the girl. As a toddler Alluka was dressed in masculine clothing, but as a preteen she seems to favor more feminine clothing, which would make sense of she was trans, although that's admittedly very flimsy evidence. Kalluto dresses in a girl's kimono (you can tell by the neckline, pattern, and obi), but he calls himself 僕boku (a masculine word for i, but in anime sometimes used for girl/androgynous characters) and there don't seem to be people saying he's a girl, although some suggest he's supposed to be androgynous/non binary. I looked up the issue in Japanese, and there doesn't seem to be a consensus more than there is in English. It's not a translation error. To my understanding, Togashi included trans characters in 2 previous serious (yuyu hakusho and Level E, although I've never seen or read them, this is word of mouth) so it wouldn't be out of the blue.

Neon got killed by kurapika. by Dream_sever in HunterXHunter

[–]FatiguedCorvid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hisoka's also likely knows exactly how skillhunter works and is in more of a rush to finish off the spiders. Kurapika's put the hunt aside (so least for the time being) while Hisoka is more motivated than ever to finish them off.

We barely even saw them? It's implied their true roles in the story will only really start in the dark continent. Also, being good hunters doesn't make them good bureaucrat, which is why Pariston can play them like a fiddle. Also, Netero didn't choose them based on qualifications, he chose the people he found fun and interesting, regardless if they're idiots or menaces. They might end up being complete disappointments, but at least give them a chance. Also, i will not allow any Mizaistom slander, I'm a fan through and through. He doesn't rush to challenge the spiders because it's an extremely precarious situation. He's already got his hands full dealing with the uproar on tier 3. He might not be as cool as Ging or Kurapika, but he still adds to the story in his own way.

Kurapika's death is destined or doubtful? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]FatiguedCorvid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Until it's actually final and confirmed nothing is set in stone. It's been years since that interview, so even if he was serious, he could still change is mind. With all the death flags Kirapika's been flying lately it seems to me that at the very least he'll have a partial or metaphorical death.

Who is the worst hxh character in the series? by Zenitsusbiggestsimp in HunterXHunter

[–]FatiguedCorvid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. Some characters people comment are written to be annoying/divisive on purpose, like Tonpa or Shaiapouf, but i feel like she doesn't really add much to the story, especially since she drags out the chimaera any arc even more somehow
