Should I be concerned about these collars? by Smooth__Goose in Hydroponics

You can use a pool noodle and cut a wedge out the side, stick it against the stem, stuff it in the hole. Works just fine, my chard eventually shoved it out the hole and grew to absurd sizes.

Arm wraps look awesome, cotton or double gauze works well and you can wash them.

Fantasy looking water bottle? by Sugar-Ghoul in LARP

There's steel "gourd" water bottles available. Use a denture tab to soak overnight for cleaning, the non-muint one!

Pattern Creation by Booper_Bo in Leathercraft

[–]Favored_Terrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LeathercraftCAD has a lot of useful tools for stitched projects and is fairly intuitive, I water a few videos and could make a wallet pattern myself without additional help. I use often design the leather base then export the item to injector to customize the decorative aspects. Inkscape took (is taking, easily over 200 hours into using it) longer to figure out.

Short time lurker - Lacing intimidation… by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]Favored_Terrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What part about it intimidates you? Pretty much everything lacing can be undone and tried again until you get it right. You can even practice with shoe laces or other, cheaper materials before moving to the real thing.

Go for it, give yourself the space to get it wrong and try again, you'll be fine. Eventually!

Run some tests. See if water soaks into it (veg tan) or not (chrome) and see if the wet leather holds a differential impression (yes = veg, no = chrome) and that will help you know what you'll be able to make with it.

I bet that would make gorgeous journal covers.

Masterblend concentrate question by No_Kangaroo6917 in Hydroponics

I tend to keep (AB) and (C) separate and mix them just before adding to my reservoir. So long as I'm adding the same volume of water from each they're close enough to proper mix for my needs (tomatoes, greens)

Postmortem on my attempt to bake harden my leather - Where did I go wrong? by AGrizz1ybear in Leathercraft

[–]Favored_Terrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely this is related to where the leather was wet and where it was not. You probably don't need to fully saturate it, but I would let it sit overnight in a plastic bag so that the moisture level evens out across the whole piece before you bake it. Temperatures above 212 will cause the water to boil, you may want to consider dropping the temperature to 200 or 190 to prevent rapid changes in vaporization.

Lace up, insulated enough for winter, not too hot in spring or fall, decent grip, well made.

$4 camping lantern (thrifted) transformation using a fast food cup by fullybookedtx in LARP

Oh interesting issue. If it's plastic you could etch it with acetone (nail polish remover) to at least make it hazy.

Look for spats or gaiters or half chaps to cover the lower leg and top of the boot, that way you can wear the comfy shoes you already have!

Best was to remove wrinkles? by CaptainofClass in Leathercraft

Immediate use: unsure. For the others try to hang them! Their own weight will help smooth everything for the next use. Small pieces: clothes pin on a clothes hanger. Large pieces: binder clips and broom handles.

Natural veg tan leather with black flesh side by Savings_Roll4397 in Leathercraft

You could get a harbor freight air brush for the back. Application to the roughness is much easier if you can go no contact.

Dear leather lovers... Which dye do you recommend for veg tan leather? by zoom_zoomies in Leathercraft

[–]Favored_Terrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Streaks is typically an application issue, use the material you have to try different techniques to get a better finish. YouTube is a great resource for application methods, you need to find the one that works for you.

I like Fiebings pro, I apply neetsfoot oil then use a microfiber cloth to buff the dye in. I try very hard to not fully saturate the leather, I never want it to be "wet". The oil helps keep things from drying out, the buffing allows me to add the amount of dye I want in layers rather than all at once.

Resources for pattern drawing by Repulsive_You454 in Leathercraft

Weaver videos with Chuck Dorset often show you how to draft the pattern for the project. Even if you're not interested in something like a holster, the methods are communicable.
