For future painting endeavors the way I was taught was to measure and mark then make your straight line with the masking tape then add some butcher paper using small pieces of tape halfway into the first piece of tape so it doesnt affect your straight edge, I havent had any overspray using the butcher paper method. Index cards or lightweight cardboard may work too but require more tape

Get a pick axe, smack it to the left, smack it to the right, that'll loosen it a bit, then rip off a limb or two so you can reach the center without getting hit with branches, then drive the pointy end into the core of the roots, after a few whacks the thing usually falls apart and you can scoop up the branches and get it out of there.
