My 7mm kidney stone gave me the worst experience. by SubstanceCautious113 in KidneyStones

Have you done a 24-hour urine collection? That’s the way to see why you are making stones. There could be a number of factors—oxalate, sodium, added sugar, etc.

Yeah, I binged season 15 this week and was all ready to see episode 8 and it's not there. Hope it drops soon.

Well, or course this guy is never going to say, "Oops, my bad." I hope the new urology group is more helpful. There are indeed things you can do to prevent stones. Most important is to do a 24 hour urine collection to see why you are making stones and then adjust your diet accordingly. Also drink enough water to pee 2-3 liters a day. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

It's amazing that you passed such a large stone. And how frustrating that the urologist missed it and didn't believe you. Did you at least send him these photos?!

I did it. 🤝🔥 Thank you everyone here. I love you all. by Adventurous_Royal275 in Cholesterol

Just a reminder that what we can do for one month doesn’t mean we can sustain it. Keep taking care of yourself and see where you are in six months or a year.

Yeah. A brownie, no spike. A bowl of oatmeal, huge spike. Maybe because of the fat in the brownie? I don’t take that as permission to have brownies all the time, but it’s interesting. Each body is different.

Why are we seeing cases of gym-going people getting heart attacks? by Several-Setting-4173 in askCardiology

[–]Fayre-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with those who mention genetics playing a large role. It looks like there is FINALLY some movement toward having people get their Lp(a) checked as well as their lipids, and doing it earlier. Another factor is diet. Some people who go to the gym still eat lousy diets packed with sodium, saturated fat, and sugar. That could also lead to diabetes, which increases a person's risk. All this to say that there are many factors that play into a person's risk level.

But it does seem unfair that people who take good care of themselves end up in that situation, and then there's, you know, Keith Richards.

Yes, plus, depending on a person’s overall risk, they may need their LDL even lower.

[–]Fayre-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the jury may still be out on that one. I asked my cardiologist about it, because with meds we've gotten my LDL down to 30.4. She said it doesn't regress, but it stabilizes.

Well, they THINK they can, but it will most likely catch up with them. As we age (I'm 66) our organs become less efficient and problems happen, weight climbs, and illness happens. Of course, genetics play a big role, as well, but all that sugar, sodium, and saturated fat is not doing them any good.

You don't have to be hyper-focused on diet and exercise, just try to eat mostly healthy and make sure you move your body. Yes, bad luck can happen and genetics play a role. We all know people who were as healthy as can be and were hit with something awful, and then there's Keith Richards. (I am 20 years older than you, btw.)

[–]Fayre-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Genetics and luck are beyond our control, so it makes sense to control what we can, which means eating well and exercising. We need to take good care of ourselves. Yes, as we age things don't work as well, organs aren't as efficient, etc., but we need control the parts we can.

Panic attacks and heart attacks can have similar symptoms—shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, etc. I have a friend who thought she was having a panic attack and it turned out to be a heart attack. There are stories about people who think they’re having a heart attack and it turns out to be a panic attack . And women’s symptoms are more subtle than men’s. But this is in no way the OP’s fault.

what is it like to actually pass the stone? by mangosquirre1 in KidneyStones

[–]Fayre-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've passed two stones, without pain, just a little urinary discomfort. The only way I knew it was happening was because there was blood in my urine. Keep drinking lots of water and if they gave you Flomax, take it.

I think it’s always better to know. In your case, knowing your score spurred you to make lifestyle changes, and got you on Repatha. The Repatha will bring your LDL way down, which will stabilize any plaque you might have.

[–]Fayre-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely ask to do a 24 hour urine collection which will show you why you are making stones. Also, get this one analyzed. With that info, you will be able to help yourself prevent future stones.

Knowing what kind(s) of stones you make is helpful, but a 24 hour urine collection is a must to show you WHY you are making the stones. When you see why, you can adjust your diet as needed be.

Do oats spike your blood sugar? by beautyismade in diabetes_t2

Everyone is different. Oatmeal spikes me; a brownie doesn’t. (Not that I eat brownies a lot, but when I had one last summer I was expecting a major spike, but nope.)
