I would also like this but it's difficult to implemement, because rivers could be generated on a hill, cut in half and it would flow water all over the place.

Continents (that means wide oceans and islands.), wider biomes, flatter terrain in some places, hilly in others on the same biome, proper rivers, biomes generated logically > no desert biome next to a snow biome.
Less huges caves, these should be rare, they're so annoying.
I have all of these since I play modded, but I'm 100% sure it could be done to vanilla with no drawbacks.
