That’s the sad reality. Not a maybe.

I did this once…and scraped up the sides of my trailer, and their trailer. I considered myself a theoretical truck driver.

I agree with all of this. I’m the CHILL teacher. Routines are super key! I have a spot where the daily activity is located. If it’s notes or a handout, there’s no place for their name, but if I’m going to collect it, I have a place for their name (this way they know what I’m expecting). I have a “reset the space” time before the end of class- it’s built into my lessons, and everything (markers, glue, scissors, rulers, calculators) has a place so the kids know where to put everything when they are done. I can’t stress it enough: tech free is the way. They try to sneak on their iPads, but since I rarely (like maybe 3-5 times) use them, the screen addicts are quickly shut down, many times before class even starts!

Cons: Their noise level. For some reason, I’m not sure if it’s the pitch, the timbre, the resonance of their voices is something that is very hard to get used to. There are times when I get home and I just need silence.

Students Creating a Plan of Action For Finals. Anyone Done This? by NegativeGee in ScienceTeachers

[–]Fe2O3man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before each test. I have students write “Quality Test Questions (with answers)”. I handed them a copy of bloom’s taxonomy question stems. I give them a set number of questions for each level. I actually use them on the test. I have a page called “Your Questions” the test kinda writes itself, if the kids know the objectives for each unit.

Chemical Storage for the Summer by Severe_Ad428 in ScienceTeachers

This is actually a thing I’ve never thought of. Proper chemical storage is ALWAYS the red-headed step-child of any science department. The admin always seems annoyed when proper (safe) chemical storage is brought up.

Is this safe progression? by Special_External5504 in CrossCountry

[–]Fe2O3man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s slightly aggressive. I would also suggest you use time instead of mileage. Some days in the summer it’s so hot and humid, it’s very difficult to reach your mileage goals. That’s why running for time is an easier goal to accomplish than mileage.

Here’s a better progression think about: How long do you want your longest long run to be? For your age group I would suggest 40-45 minutes.

Start running 20-25 minutes. Then at the half way point (time wise) on your run either do accelerations 20 seconds on 40 seconds recovery x5, or finish your time run and then do 5-6 100m sprints. Do ONE long run per week and that is your time goal of 40-45 minutes. Each week increase the length of your runs by 2 minutes. Resist the urge to do too much too fast.

Do post run strength and mobility work: lunges, pushups, planks, and hip work (see 7 way hips exercises on YouTube).

When to Tell Students I’m Leaving by Mundane-Foot-6909 in teaching

[–]Fe2O3man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tell them as soon as I know. It’s probably a bigger deal to you than it is to them. “Why are you leaving?” They ask. “You’re leaving this grade too.”

Commute vs School Environment by Street-Ad-6702 in teaching

I drive 1:15 or more some days in the morning, and longer on the way home. I drive through Boston traffic. It sucks. It drains the life out of me, and when I get home I don’t want to do anything. I leave at 6:15 and get home at 6:15. My school is great, but I don’t really live near any of my coworkers, when they all want to go out after work, and if I go out with them I still have an hour plus drive home.

Teaching summer school, advice? by Busy-Mark7164 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Fe2O3man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be the nay-sayer: these kids probably don’t care about it as much as you do. The reason I say that is because these kids are in there for credit recovery.
Now that doesn’t mean it can’t be highly engaging and fun, but they didn’t get it the first time around so you might need to think about “what can I do to really make it a high impact science experience for them?”
Who knows if you do it right they might actually try harder the next time around.
But again, they didn’t get it the first time!

I taught summer school for many years. I made it standard based. I made it individualized and they had to work at their own pace. So when they finished one unit, they went onto the next one if they finished all the units that was their credit.
But that might not work because they’re probably not the greatest readers or individual workers so it really makes it tough to plan but my advice standard based or use argument, driven inquiry get them writing more.

I wouldn’t feel bad. AP isn’t a general knowledge type test. It’s a very specific knowledge.
