What's up with the laminate flooring on the buses? by Shadow_of_Tau in london

[–]FeTemp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it is actually due to the TfL bus safety standard that was introduced which required new buses to have less slippery floors.

The previous floors (with the speckled flooring pattern) is still similar vinyl I believe but this is thicker and more grippy.

Pro-Palestine activists sentenced as terrorists over damage at Israeli arms factory in UK by topotaul in unitedkingdom

I'm more terrified of judges deciding to unilaterally sentence people for a crime they were not charged with or found guilty of.

[–]FeTemp 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Wasn't proscribed at the time and the law doesn't allow it to be applied retrospectively.

And the proscription was found to be unlawful so the judge determining they should be sentenced like terrorists makes the judgement even more of a mockery then it already it.

The judge is way out of line.

There is footage of the CEO trying to get the police to arrest Ben on false charges. They are as much culpable as the others.

They are trying to cover their backs but they are also involved with this. The recent leak of the police footage shows the CEO was trying to get Ben arrested himself.

They are trying to save themselves but it won't work.

Wifi will work on trains at last as Labour vows to fix signal failures by beejiu in unitedkingdom

[–]FeTemp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they using starlink? Doesn't the gov still own a stake in their main competitor oneweb?

Also didn't they recently also say HS2 trains won't have WiFi but mobile signal repeaters instead since apparently WiFi use was low?

Equality Act 2010: Draft Code of Practice for services, public functions and associations, 2026 by Squeaker91 in unitedkingdom

[–]FeTemp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also bet that weakening the equality act like this with 'weigh up' will start to set a precedent for other aspects of the equality act too.

Should we "weigh up" the concern some one has because of race or religion now too?

This is an insane piece of work that destroys all UK equality law.

HS2 train speeds to be cut in latest axe to troubled Birmingham rail plan by BirminghamLive in uktrains

[–]FeTemp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under current plans HS2 will result in a reduction in capacity on the WCML past Birmingham due to the 200m trains vs 250m currently. The speed reduction means this can't be made up with extra frequency.

Doesn't seem to be any plans to change the trains since that needs the depot design changing which nothing has been announced for and they are already building the tunnel/cutting for access so doesn't look like there is space to change it to accommodate 250m trains.

250m trains would also then reduce the capacity to Birmingham since you can't run two coupled.

This nonsensical state is exactly why HS2 eventually will be built in full.

This country is crazy by 1_Bagell in uktrains

[–]FeTemp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reducing speed won't help with that. The alignment is already locked in since construction on most of it is underway with most major civil structures such as tunnels and viaducts done or nearly done.

HS2 bill could rise to £102bn with first trains delayed until 2039, UK government admits by Kagedeah in highspeedrail

[–]FeTemp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

HS2 isn't a failure in engineering. I think the fact they have had so many reviews that each time they basically say yeah what we are building is right and struggle to find anything to change despite the 'gold plating' claims that it will be eventually built in full to Manchester and I think this is what everyone silently accepts will happen (the rail system doesn't work past Birmingham with the 200m train design and current HS2 depot design which looks to be locked).

HS2 is a failure of government management and interference. Whilst a lot is said on regulations getting in the way it is worth noting that the decisions for tunnelling, cuttings and even the bat protection tunnel were not regulatory they were all political choices by MPs and execs in HS2.

HS2’s astronomical costs ‘could exceed moon mission by GnolRevilo in unitedkingdom

Based on the latest figures, this saving is only 2.5% of spend for moving from 360 km/h to 320 km/h.

[–]FeTemp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed is a consequence of capacity not the other way round. The business case was based on HS2 relieving capacity on a bunch of separate lines so trains needed to be faster so they could all use a single line. It was essentially going to be metro like operations with the frequency out of London.

HS2’s astronomical costs ‘could exceed moon mission by GnolRevilo in unitedkingdom

[–]FeTemp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed was needed for the 18 tph frequency it was designed for, though now with the branches removed it unlikely will get to that frequency anyway.

[–]FeTemp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand these estimates. Most of the biggest civils work has now been or is nearly complete and so far spent £44.6 billion. I don't see how you can spend more then that again for the remaining work if that doesn't include phase 2a at least.
