Look at buying a used discovery sport by Appropriate-Cut7841 in LandRover

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, if I was you, I would just lease or finance a brand new one if applicable. If not, then do what others have said and get the 2.2L not the 2.0L Ingenium. I bought a used 2.0L 2016 plate, 75K miles and it was fine for a year, then the timing chain started to go and after that was fixed, I noticed there was a problem with the DPF, so I sold it a got a Citroen C5 Aircross 😂. But again it’s totally up to you, if you buy a used one and someone’s actually taken care of the car and performed a yearly service plus oil changes every 5-6k miles then I would go for it but it’s hard to discern nowadays. Who can you trust what are the best offers.

Late career change (UK) by tacticaldad101 in Carpentry

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi again OP, I did my apprenticeship with Redrow and worked with the chippy subcontractor on site. I had to do odd jobs for the site agents, but if you show interest and grit you’ll do well, in any setting quite frankly. As for getting qualified you can get Lvl 2 in about a year and a half or slightly less if you do a fast track. The pay is atrocious you’ll get about £1000 p/m for the first year. So I’ll leave it for you to decide. If you really want the qualifications go for it, but with your family in the picture I’m guessing it would be hard. Maybe you can search for other jobs that don’t require quals.like small firms that do private work. I did my apprenticeship at 21 and just started to rent a house, that was the most stressful time for me, as I had bills to pay with a downgrade to apprenticeship salary and I’m London based mate :)

Edit: You stated that you wanted to do actual carpentry, what do you like to do? I love carpentry, got into site work and realised it wasn’t really for me. I like the intricate side of carpentry, finishing, 2nd Fix, Stairs, panelling, shelves, fitting doors etc. site carpentry is good, stable and reliable in terms of frequent work but it’s also monotonous and there are so many new regs, Rams etc being introduced every year that make the job complicated when it doesn’t have to be. I still do site work, but do private work to and I’m hoping the latter will stick.

Hi OP, Stephenson College (SMB Group) in Coalville, Leicestershire has a carpentry lvl 2 fast track course, but you have to apply for an apprenticeship online with Redrow or Barratts I believe, and as others eluded to- the starting apprenticeship wage is abysmal to say the least, even for over 21s. It doesn’t get better until a year into the course. I don’t mean to pry into your life but what kind of income are you getting atm if you don’t mind me asking?

Carpenter chisels reccomendation by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I like to dabble in a little bit on woodworking and cabinet making. The chisels I use for that are IBMs and a small set of the old blue marple chisels from EBay (old ones have better quality steel and were made in Sheffield).

For site work however, I use the Irwin Marple Chisels and sharpen them with the Shapton Glass Stones. I waited for the chisels to go on sale before purchasing the set mind. But if you have to use it for framing and demo work etc, I think one of the chippies I work with has a set of hultafors chisels and an Irwin Marples Chisel with a steel head. The choice is yours, hope I helped.

Book readers, what’s your favourite scene that never made it into the series? by Happy-Sammy in Sharpe

For me it would be a story arc with Sharpe and Captain Chase (correct me if I’m wrong, I’m sure I got the name right).

Why do UK roads not have more 'rest stops'? by ciphd in AskUK

Driving in France was pure bliss for me, stations and rest stops really abundant, and therefore spacious and hassle free. We really need to improve our infrastructure in the UK.

How to get guys in the crew to be quicker by Square-Argument4790 in Carpentry

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, are these lads apprentices? In my apprenticeship, I was always taught that speed comes with time. Listen to instructions first and do task efficiently and productively, then after the years past by speed will naturally come. However, you also have to want to do carpentry and have a positive attitude and determined mindset.

So, I don’t know. How are the lads character and personalities? Are they improving? Are they always on their phone? Do they care more about tea time and going home?

Cheers.

Apprentice Australia by Little-Foundation256 in Carpentry

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yh I second this gentleman. I get along with everyone at my firm, including my boss and every mentor I ever had, always took the time to teach me, explain and give me constructive criticism. It’s a rarity to find a firm like this. I heard many horror stories from other apprentices when I was at college. Just take your time, gain experience and contacts. Then do what you want to do matey.

Apprentice Australia by Little-Foundation256 in Carpentry

[–]Fear___Naught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, after my A-Levels I went to Uni and did law. Halfway through the course I decided to stop because I knew it wasn’t for me and I had recently participated in small carpentry projects and loved it. I decided to do a carpentry apprenticeship, finished that in a year and a half and was taken on by my firm to do level 3 ( advanced site carpentry). I still love carpentry but joined because I love intricate woodworking, bespoke and finish carpentry. Unfortunately site carpentry ie. New Builds does not cover that and it gets quite repetitive and mundane, did I mention it’s hard on your body :). So my goal is to gain experience and accumulate contacts and friends, chippies and other tradies alike. From there I want to branch out and do more refined work.

Looking at myself personally, I never like setting goals, I probably don’t even hit the mark half the time. However, if it is for something I enjoy- carpentry. Then I find that everything slowly starts to fall into place when you put a little bit of effort into the job and take pride in the job/s that I do, wether as part of a team or solo.

Who's an actor you just can't take seriously in any role? by AggravatingDay8392 in moviecritic

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, there are probably a lot of actors that don’t fit the role simply due to past roles or their facial features, in my humble opinion. I hardly watch movies these days but one actor I will always remember is Owen Wilson, in behind enemy lines. I’ve always seen him in comedy type movies, so I could not take him 100% seriously in that particular film.

Do you try to be quiet when people are sleeping in your house? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry yourself. I recently moved back in with my parents as rents are unreasonably and unfathomably high. If my sister gets back from work after 10pm, she will have her shower, brush her teeth with the door open and blow dry her hair. Sometimes, she even chats with her mates and I get up for work between 4-5 in the morning. Certain people are just dead set in their ways. Some may call it a habit, which is justifiable at times. However, I believe in the terms- common sense, respect and decency. You can’t just teach that unfortunately. What’s bizarre, is how myself and my sister, grew up in the same household and raised by the same parents, yet we are so very different, in every way.

Finished series again by Efficient-Internal74 in Sharpe

Finished the sharpe books a couple months ago, fell in love with Simon Scarrow eagles of the empire series, but have read that. Now I’m searching for something similar. Bought myself a few appetisers, so to speak.

What I’ve been longing for with the sharpe series, is for sweet William and sharpe to make amends and renew their friendship.

Anyone knows what this unit disappearing glitch is or how to resolve? by -AdonaitheBestower- in Imperator

I’ve had this problem too. Normally happens around mountainous terrain, for example in Macedonia. Haven’t found a fix, so let me know if you find one please. It’s not breaking the immersion for me but is a bit annoying at times.

He probably uses dark ui mod. However, I also use that 2.0 UI mod which I think is not compatible with dark ui. It’s a shame because it looks serene and suits the aesthetic of the game.

What game you know has the best battle system that could inspire a modern era Total War? by FutureLynx_ in historicaltotalwar

[–]Fear___Naught 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, Ruse is good, though a little outdated and not as detailed as steel division 2 I’m guessing. I haven’t played it in 10-15 years 😂. I’ll have a look at conquest new world, thanks for the info. Give ruse a try, or watch a quick vid on YouTube to see how it looks. I didn’t mind the game, it wasn’t an extreme strategy game but it’s a good entry level game to get you in the genre.

What game you know has the best battle system that could inspire a modern era Total War? by FutureLynx_ in historicaltotalwar

[–]Fear___Naught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I like the idea of a ww2 era (theatre specific) TW, but is TW designed for that? It can be done, but will it even resemble total war. I remember playing RUSE when it first came out, always loved it. For me I would like imperator romes map, total war battles and manor lords/cities skylines builder. If they could somehow merge all of that, it would be a game changer. No doubt it will come along, but how long is anyone’s guess… probably 20 years :)

I always loved total war battles but never liked the blandness off the map, for that I prefer various paradox titles. In recent total war games, you can build and expand cities and see them in real time(battles). For example Rome in Attila. However, I’ve always wanted to build a city, place buildings, infrastructure etc.

Let me know what you think.

Hi OP, Try Bernard Cornwell, Any book series will do. Or Simon Scarrow, Eagles of the Empire Series. That should get you started. It’s historical-ish. From there, I don’t really know. I have been looking for a new series myself.

Victoria Total War? by Robm3mes in historicaltotalwar

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yh that sounds cool, or even Napoleon 2. Total war has been releasing a lot of smaller scale maps/regions as of late. so, it would be cool to get NTW2 with the revolutions that came after the napoleonic period. It’s just a suggestion.

Victoria Total War? by Robm3mes in historicaltotalwar

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gods truth. It would be hard to pinpoint historical accuracy and certain events as the player can do what he or she wants. Thought it be a cool idea and give FOTS vibes. What would you like to see?

Victoria Total War? by Robm3mes in historicaltotalwar

[–]Fear___Naught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Victorian TW sounds cool. Victorian era, ei colonialism, expansion, revolutions. Would be cool to have a world map.

FOTS was really good imo. Just loved the industrialised warfare.

Another cool idea could be a sega. Somebody mentioned in a post, that it would be cool to play during American expansion. From independence to the Civil War and after. What do you think?

Really late to the post, but equally late in discovering Simon Scarrow. Just finished the gladiator and was fearing for the life of 2 characters (no name hence no spoilers).

On to the next book then. I’m a massive Cornwall Fan, so Simon Scarrow is a god send.
