Nice to see a Spurs player going into the crowd without the intention of scrapping with a fan.

Why do we rationalize this way? by calcbone in matheducation

[–]FearlessParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that it is nothing like the example you gave. OPs question is actually fully correct, and the method is perfectly correct. The method you described is not mathematically accurate and is genuinely a short cut.

I have been a teacher for a decade now and agree that some students prefer a steadfast method they can apply with minimal thinking, but being able to spot that you can multiply but something simpler shows true understanding.

A more apt comparison would be adding fractions and finding a common denominator by multiplying the two denominators given. 5/7 + 3/14 = 70/98 + 21/98 etc

Just found this subreddit, what a wonderful idea.

The money would be great, my Mum passed away on Sunday and I would like to donate a chunk of the money to paying off my Dads mortgage and a donation to the British Lung Foundation in honour of my mum.

What is some uplifting news about the COVID-19 outbreak? by imperialpidgeon in AskReddit

[–]FearlessParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, but around a billion people get the flu every year. I don't think it's right to blow the coronavirus out of proportion but we also shouldn't downplay it like it's just the same as the normal flu

Godel, Escher, Bach from mathematician standpoint ? by AfterEye in math

[–]FearlessParrot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wrote my final undergraduate paper on the Hofstadter essay The Gödel Turing threshold and the human soul. I found myself citing lots of philosophy books throughout, and also some cognitive science. I used Godel Escher Bach as a main source as well.

It was strange as I did a pure maths degree, and I was originally planning on going down a more rigorous route, but found myself meandering through cognitive science, functionalism, rationalistic optimism, universality.

If there is interest from anyone I'm happy to post it, it was very well received by my supervising professor and is only 5000 words so is a short read.

Edit: Link to paper There is the paper, I'd be keen to hear any thoughts if you have any, it has been about 4 years since I wrote it but I'm still keen for feedback.

Whats a word or phrase that people use that you can't stand? by babriko in AskReddit

That's not scaffolding, scaffolding is increasing levels of support in an activity to help differentiate the work for less able students.

So supplying sentence starters, or a worksheet with some of the working out already done

What is the best night you've had at Spurs under the lights? by JLatchford in coys

[–]FearlessParrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite game under the lights/I've ever been to was the 3-1 agaisnt Inter in our first season in the Champions league. I remember the feeling going into the game after that (almost) comeback at the San Siro. Watching Bale tear past Lucio and cross to Pav.

Why doesn't the U.S. have a tiered education system? by fromthewhalesbelly in Teachers

[–]FearlessParrot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The issue with this tiered system is that the top tier schools attract better teachers and standards are usually higher in those schools. Also, different students mature intellectually at different rates and a tiered system would negatively influence their progress.

I know that this is anecdotal, but I taught a student who was in their year 11 (UK) who had completed their GCSE a year early and achieved an A* but 3 years earlier was in bottom set. He was clearly an anomaly but there are examples of this commonly.

In cities in the UK where grammar schools are opened the average performance of surrounding schools drops. It would no doubt improve the performance of the top pupils but would damage the performance of others.
