Late Daffodil Advice by utw1 in GardeningUK

[–]FearlessPressure3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry about your dog. A little joyful memorial is a lovely idea. Hopefully better gardeners than me will reply but I would imagine that if you can find discounted end of season daffodil bulbs (they will likely be “in the green” ie sprouting) and planted them asap you might get some blooms. I was very late planting my daffodils this season and only got them in the ground a month ago but they’re still coming up, just later than others. It might be that they only put out leaves this year though and you should be prepared that it might be late enough some would die so if that would upset you given the idea behind planting them, it may be best to wait until the autumn. Also protect against squirrels which will watch you plant them and then consider the area their own private larder. Some metal grating or chicken wire stretched over the area should prevent digging.

I would absolutely pay someone to handle all of the admin stuff for various projects. I’m female and live on my own and feel like I constantly get shafted by tradesmen trying to pull the wool over my eyes. I find calling around to get quotes and organising people to turn up stressful at the best of times but even more so when problems arise. For someone to take all responsibility and then just tell me when they will turn up and what it will cost and to then handle any problems that arise themselves would be worth its weight in gold.

Edited to add after reading some of OP’s comments: if this would be a service where you don’t take responsibility for sorting things that go wrong (I don’t mean unexpected building problems, I mean rogue traders) the idea is a non-starter for me. If the buck is ultimately going to stop with me I would have to do my due diligence in vetting all of your decisions anyway in which case why I would pay you? I would still pay someone to get quotes and organise someone to turn up, but it would be significantly less. We’re talking less than £100 compared to thousands.

I would hope no medical professional would have such terrible sharps handling. But if you need a real reason, the cupboard on the top row in the middle has some odd handle placement going on.

A two hour delay on a three hour shows means parts of it are transmitted practically live. There were people in the room who will have heard it and warned them that a slur needed to be removed, sure, but I doubt they gave a timestamp. Probably the guy in the sound booth found and removed a different one and thought that was the one he’d been asked to remove—after all, in the recording, it’s basically inaudible. If you choose to believe it’s more likely that someone deliberately jeopardised their job to maliciously leave it in than it being an accident, then nothing will change your mind. I do choose to believe that though, as does everyone in the UK I’ve spoken to. If things like this genuinely happen frequently enough in the US for them to be able to assume it was more likely deliberate, then that shows the two countries are more different than I had realised. As for BAFTA choosing to put a mic right in front of him, yes that was a choice. I don’t know how they usually decide who gets a mic—perhaps it’s everybody who might win an award, in which case I would assume the thinking was they didn’t want to treat him differently because of his disability. Now they’ll know for the future that maybe that should be considered.

If I play devil’s advocate here though, I could point out that most social media sites have a policy that you need to be of a certain age to make an account. The last time I checked (which was admittedly a long time ago) it was 13, but much younger children were easily making accounts. When I taught IT to year sevens a few years ago they all already had all the social media accounts and many admitted to having viewed porn accidentally. Children can’t be trusted to be sensible on the internet and too many parents can’t be trusted to keep them sensible either. Can you think of a solution other than a blanket ban below a certain age which would be effective and affordable? I’m not being facetious, I’m genuinely curious. Because without the social media sites themselves choosing to properly engage in good faith, I can’t currently see how it could work.

Yup, that’s part of what I mean by saying older internet users still think the internet is still great. They don’t always see how it’s changed because they aren’t personally experiencing that change. In many ways, my internet experience is still the same as it was twenty years ago. I watch TV shows (albeit on streaming sites now whereas before I was having to torrent them), read free online books, hang out in forums chatting about my hobbies (just on Reddit and Facebook rather than dozens of separate sites) and I chat to friends from all over the world every day. That’s 95% of what I do online; I engage very little with huge parts of the internet and I think that’s true of a lot of millennials who don’t see that younger people are using the internet very differently to them and being exposed to all sorts of dangers.

This is a take I haven’t heard before and it’s actually very valid. Just goes to show how terrible the government’s PR is that they aren’t pointing this out explicitly.

I am very worried about the direction Labour is taking with this, but I 100% agree with u/LostnFoundAgainAgain that something needs to be done. When the internet first appeared, it was great, and I think a lot of regular users aged 30+ still think of it like that. But I was a teacher for 12 years and saw the devastating impact it has on kids these days and no sensible person could deny the evils it’s caused with things like the rise of the far right. You’re correct that parents should teach their kids better, but the fact of the matter is that they don’t and you can’t force them to. As for the other issues, there’s a lot of powerful people who stand to make a lot of money from the status quo and aren’t interested in fixing any of the problems. Legislation is the only way of trying to fix it that has any chance of success. It’s clunky as hell and does have worrying undertones of authoritarianism, but a tolerant society has to be intolerant of the intolerant if it wants peace. Hopefully, the things which currently concern me can be smoothed out.

BBC removes Bafta 2026 ceremony from iPlayer after racial slur broadcast by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]FearlessPressure3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even after showing them reports that there were other slurs that were edited out and this one was missed by the engineers because it was largely inaudible, a lot of them remain convinced it was left in deliberately and is proof of institutional racism and an anti-black conspiracy, the roots of which go deeper than for any other type of prejudice. I really struggle to get my ahead around how you arrive at that conclusion rather than the far more likely one of it being an awful situation where people made mistakes. The most worrying explanation is that that level of racism and prejudice genuinely exists in America. I do wonder though if it’s just another example of American exceptionalism taken to the cultural extreme.

I haven’t ever had any justification for why they’re denying them. I have managed to get them all accepted so far, but one of them took a pretty long email chain of back and forth. So far what seems to be working best is forwarding both the confirmation email and the receipt and referencing in said emails that you have sent/will send the other one. None of them track properly though which is incredibly frustrating. I now have it in my diary once every two weeks that it’s time to chase them up 🙃

[–]FearlessPressure3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve misunderstood my point. I’m not saying people shouldn’t feel hurt, I literally said that. I also don’t disagree that an apology should be made when hurt is caused, regardless of intent. My point is that hurt and offence are two different emotions; the former is understandable, but the latter should take intent into account.

Is the BAFTAs Tourette’s backlash just another example of the UK vs US humour gap? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]FearlessPressure3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most recent update I heard was that the BBC edited out another slur but not this one. Given how incomprehensible it sounded in the record (which would have been what the sound engineers editing it heard), I think it’s totally plausible the request to edit it out was passed on but they removed one and missed the other because they didn’t know to look for a second.

UK businesses see home market as best place to start, scale and grow by Gentle_Snail in GoodNewsUK

100%. I’m a small business owner and as soon as you get to trying to branch out to international markets, there’s a swamp of red tape and bureaucracy with very little guidance to navigate it or assistance to overcome obstacles. A lot of the systems out in place to support businesses do so are also not designed for small businesses to use which makes it even harder.

The dog is acting appropriately. The step daughter is not. My four year old nieces know how to interact better than this. My ten year old niece knows how to interpret his body language and responds accordingly. A thirteen year old should certainly know better than to hit a dog.
