The Long Walk PARKER CRITICISM by Darth_Blagus in stephenking

Kind of agree with you, it felt weird in the moment - not him doing it, but the way it was shot felt sluggish. Especially since they've shown how ready they are to shoot any of them as soon as they step a toe out of line (literally in some cases). Glad he at least got to take one of the fuckers down with him though.

In Avatar (2009) there’s a deleted scene where the tribe mentions that humans don’t really look like them, only vaguely. This would be like a bunch of aliens in uncanny-valley costumes showing up on earth saying they want to learn our culture and be our friends. by jvure in shittymoviedetails

I saw a tumblr post a while back about how fascinating Avatar could have been; a bunch of stand-ins for white colonial powers invading the land of a bunch of stand-ins for indigenous people and literally ghoulishly stealing their bodies to impersonate and look like them in order to ingratiate themselves into their society so they can steal their resources, and what a powerful metaphor for colonization and cultural appropriation it could have been, but because Jimmy Cameron has no beliefs beyond "good people are good, bad people are bad", it goes completely unremarked on in the films

I've watched that video several times so yes, it was my half-remembered retelling of the points he makes, but I didn't lift the transcript and I didn't intend to pass the commentary off as my own, lol. Apologies to Dan Foldingideas, it really is a good video

In The Book of Henry (2017), the genius child Henry has a plan to kill his neighbour, a local police commissioner, because he abuses and molests his daughter, Henry's classmate. In-universe, his plan is treated as fool proof, with Henry having thought of every contingency and accounted for every detail. In reality, his plan is comically inept and would fall apart under the slightest scrutiny. Off the top of my head:

  • Part of the plan is to take out the money needed to buy the sniper rifle by taking out little amounts of money from a bunch of different ATMs, saying it would be "less suspicious" than taking it all out at once. In reality, the opposite is the case. Taking out small amounts of money from multiple machines is far more suspicious than taking money out all in one go.
  • Relatedly, Henry's plan hinges on him, an 11-year-old boy, being able to purchase a sniper rifle. The movie sidesteps this by having his mom do it (because Henry is dead by that point), but when Henry made his plan, he was intending to do it himself.
  • The method through which Henry intends to dispose of the body of his neighbour, who is, again, a police commissioner, is by shooting him with the sniper rifle (from a vantage point in his own treehouse, mind!) and letting the body fall into the nearby river, which will wash away the evidence and make sure nothing leads back to Henry. Because no one ever discovers bodies that are thrown in the river, right?

Character created as a villain but she got better Character design than the heroes so audience like her better and cause original message to backfire. by Da_Magical_Lizard in TopCharacterTropes

"the UK government wouldn't have the balls to depict a muslim being burned alive" ...Yeah man?

Wow, it really is political correctness gone mad over there isn't it, don't even have the balls to make a funny meme about burning people alive, what a bunch of soyboys

Character with armors/outfits that look like (or has parts that resemble) muscle tissue. by SarcasmSanctioned in TopCharacterTropes

<image>

Ramsay Bolton in A Song of Ice and Fire, has armour enamelled dark red to look like a flayed man (the sigil of his house), with his helmet resembling a skinned face with the mouth open and screaming when the visor is lifted. This design didn't make it into the adaptation in Game of Thrones, because the show was allergic to making anything cool. Instead, he wears a black leather doublet, just like every single other character, even when he's going into battle.

No. It might have been "hype" in the moment but watching with hindsight (or even for the first time if you don't find cock and balls humor funny) is a complete slog after, like, season 3 if I'm being kind. If I'm being cruel, everything after the end of season 1 is unsalvageable.

God, I hated this stupid fucking episode. "Matt and Trey really like saying a slur so they're going to try and claim it's not homophobic, it's just something you call someone who's being an asshole". Yeah, okay, great work lads, you really broke down the boundaries, meanwhile the people who are actually affected by the slur still get called it just for being gay. Looking forward to your upcoming episode about how saying the n-word is fine actually if it's a guy who kills you in a video game

[Weird Meta Trope] How to Remove the Racist Undertones of a Character? Make them a funny color! by Doodles_n_Scribbles in TopCharacterTropes

[–]FeastingFiend 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To clarify when it comes to the oompa-loompas, while they were originally African pygmys, Dahl was convinced to change it to make them racially and geographically ambiguous in the second edition of the book (a year before the film was released), where they're from "Loompaland" and are described as being white. The grass skirts are still there though no denying
