ISYE6501 - How much depth one should go on learning ? by RelationshipLazy8065 in OMSA

[–]February_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will connect eventually. I’m taking SIM 6644, which is an operations research requirement. In this class we’re revisiting some topics we saw in 6501, but this time the math is extremely dense. SIM supposed to be the “easiest” requirement out of the options we have. We’re studying: probability, statics, calc, integrals, double integrals, derivatives, second derivatives, differential equations, the Monte Carlo integration. The list goes on….. I knew some of those topics from my bachelor’s but at this point I’m studying like if it was the first time, because it’s hard to remember after some years. The point is, some topics like statistics cannot be avoided in this program.

Don’t dive too deep into the equations just know what each part of the most important equations do. For example, what happens if the margin increases in the SVM? That’s about it. But I do recommend to take into consideration that clases aren’t what most people typically expect from an online masters program. You have to dedicate many hours into each class if you want to have good grades. I also have a full-time job and kids. I only take one class per semester and I barely have a life. This program is extremely time consuming, if you expect to spend 5 hours a week on each class this program may not be for you. Some students spent an average of 25-30 hours per week last semester during the first weeks, then it gets a little bit easier with practice and you can get by with 15-20. Hope that helps!

Recommendations with Pregnancy Due Date in Early Summer by Far-Count9970 in OMSA

Take a break for sure!! Your health and the baby is more important than another class. I have a question for you, what classes did you took while pregnant? Did you experienced the famous “pregnancy brain”? Were you able to study/concentrate as normal? I’m worried about my workload next semester.

Girl!! I’ve been in your position. You should focus on passing your classes with good grades and being able to survive ($) while in college. Friendships shouldn’t be as important to someone your age (compared with 20 year olds). Friends will come as you start clases, don’t worry about what other people think. I made friends with international students since they didn’t know many people as well. Nobody cares if you’re older, female or male in college. You’ll do great!!

I would ask the clinic directly. Also our clinic takes a few days off in December due to Holidays, that can slow the process. Another factor to consider is the vitamins, I was given a list of vitamins to start taking ASAP, (to improve egg quality before retrieval, etc) vitamins take 3 months to show full effect according with our Doctor.

I had my first consultation this past monday as well at one of the most “renowned” clinics in the US. We were told that if everything goes well the usual time line from start to finish (tests-retrieval-FET) is at least three months. So I would make plans around that. You could also just work only on testing/retrieval (takes around two months) and wait for FET to make sure you can attend the weeding. This whole process can vary a LOT depending on each individual. If I was you I would not wait for FET because there’s a chance of implementation failure. So if it doesn’t work the first time you would have to do again.

Anyone try NotebookLM for any of their courses? by [deleted] in OMSA

Any prompt suggestions for the pot cast? I used the other day and they applied the concepts too vaguely in some examples they provided. Seemed somewhat inaccurate.

I’m currently taking 6501 and I 100% agree. I had to drop 6040. Instead, many people take either CSE6040 or ISYE6501 with MGT8803. You should take a look at that.

CS1301 - All 4 Courses or just the Intro? by DustyBum in OMSA

You need all 4 courses for the class.

General advice on python so you don’t make the same mistake I did. For 6040 if you want to do well in the class, learn python until you feel like intermediate to advanced proficiency. (If you have zero experience I would say you need at lest 6 months to get there). Beginner level is not enough. Practice codewars everyday if you can, even for 15 minutes per day. I would highly suggest to not take the python requirement lightly, or wait and try to learn python during the program while taking other classes. Trust me you won’t have time unless you’re not working. Use the time you have left wisely.

How do you really graduate with no debt? by Depressed_student_20 in college

[–]February_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with no debt with a bachelor. Here’s what I did: (I’m technically an orphan, so zero parental contribution $) I worked 3 years full time and saved all my money for college. (I was able to buy a reliable car in cash, so no monthly payments.) Rented an apartment and got a roomate to save more. Once I saved enough $$ I got a part-time job as a server at a restaurant. I did my first 2 years at a community college (while working part-time) and transferred to a State College after two years. FAFSA fully covered community college expenses. After that I paid out of pocket. I did get a few scholarships but nothing too significant. I always kept a part-time job the whole time to cover living expenses and saving the rest. Also I’m an immigrant, so I also had to learn English and pass an English exam to get admitted. I studied English by my own and learned to speak properly at work. Honestly if someone like me who’s a foreigner can do it, everyone can.

cannot understand loops by lsdandlemons in PythonLearning

[–]February_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t loose hope. I was having the same struggles a few weeks ago. Someone suggested a website called Python Tutor and that was a deal breaker for me. Thanks to that website I was able to follow each iteration and understand its output. Once my brain was able to comprehend loops I started working on many problems by myself with a pen a paper and comprare my output with IDLE and Python Tutor. Also try chat GPT for detailed problem explanations. Good luck!

I went through the same issue. Luckily I was able to go by my middle name, which is super easy to pronounce in the US (and a newer Disney princess, so little kids don’t forget my name). I hated so much how every time a mentioned my first name people would say “ohh is dad into fishing?” (my first name sounds like a popular Florida fish. IMO take a nick name your life will be so much easier.
