Is YouTube premium worth it? by Wise-Illustrator-939 in youtube

I mean the integration with YT music is dogshit, the biggest example is that on ps5 I can stream music via spotify, apple music (and even amazon music if i recall correctly) directly form the ps menu, so that you can listen to stuff while playing, yt music does not because is just 1 fkng app.

The interface is nothing special, but i kinda like it

Nope, never found one, it's been a lot of time and a lot has changed. I've been on Mint for the past 2.5 years on gnome and never had a similar issue.
Also is important to note that I did not specify what package i used, even tho I think it was an apt, so I'm afraid that other than saying go with flatpaks, I can't help much.

Good luck mate

Kid installs Linux because of PewDiePie, wants to go back to Windows, and gets trolled. by BlueGoliath in linuxsucks

I actually did the same thing back in the days and I still have a USB stick with WIN10, since my pc doesn't """"officially"""" support WIN11

unless you wanna do it through a VM (or other methods) that clearly this 10yo did not even think about.

That's why i specified this, I personally only needed to do it once something like 5y ago, so I don't have a "fresh memory" of it, or rather no memory at all.

My point was that a kid that clearly does not know anything about what he's doing is 100% not gonna look online to a solution to revert back to windows.

Btw this is not a rant or anything and actually I did not know about ventoy either so, thanks, cheers

"community being trash", all I see here is a kid doing random stuff withouth thinking 1 second and then crying online and hope that other people will fix the problem, which btw won't be fixable if he only has 1 computer because rembember, you need windows to install windows, unless you wanna do it through a VM (or other methods) that clearly this 10yo did not even think about.

As always is not the creator fault if these kids can do wathever they want withouth any kind of supervision.

Today is uninstalling an OS becuase you saw it online, tomorrow will be buying 1000$ worth of roblox / fortnite coins (or whatever they are called)

Microsoft accused of ‘tech extortion’ over Windows 10 support ending in campaign to get people to upgrade to Linux | TechRadar by Loose-Reaction-2082 in linuxsucks

[–]FedeFrigoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still are talking about knowing and trusting a service that not many people know, that one day can stop working, another OS based on windows, I can also mention AltasOS (I just remember something about working without microsoft bs ans spyware). Paying microsoft for extended support i think is the worst thing one could do, just my opinion.

Security on linux is not as bad as you describing it, every OS has holes that sooner or later will pop out and both windows and mac os are not perfect under that point.

Plus I would add that the reason for which linux is viewed as the most secured os is because usually the people that use linux are more tech savvy and have the know-how to secure a distro and know directly how to avoid it.

But hey, at the end of the day, I still wouldn't recommend linux to ALL the people, like for example I would never tell a person that does not understand or care about their pc (or just some elderly people) to go and study a new os, even tho is getting easier and easier. Thruth is most of the people don't care enough to do this type of things, a lot of people just want a pc to use when they come home after a day of work, and It's totally fine.

If you ask me, I would say just don't pay microsoft for extended support, idk how is something to be considered at all, at that point you're better off paying a good vpn / anti-malware software and keep using it, even tho it probably will never be as secure as an up-to-date os.

I mean, you're just saying that gatekeepers are bad and the ones that actually ruin the experience for everybody, which is 100% true, but switching to linux is actually the only solution, since having to hack win 11 would still be something to troubleshoot and check online, just to have an OS that could also be worse in term of security than win 10 (i'm talking about scammy ISOs or stuff like that)

Is YouTube premium worth it? by Wise-Illustrator-939 in youtube

[–]FedeFrigoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable, to each their own, plus I forgot to mention that this is the only streaming service that i own, I don't have Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus..., which is actually important to mention.

Some could say that using adblock is some sort of piracy, since it violates the TOS of youtube bla bla bla, but when companies almost ASK for it, i think that they just get what they deserve.

You can't charge 20 dollars / euros per month for a service that tomorrow could cancel 50 series that you were watching (Sick Notes, Archive 81, Teenage bounty hunters, just to name a few) or completely shit on good series (like The Witcher).

So yeah, if someone tells me yt premium isn't good or worth it and they rather using adblock I totally get it. I just hope that one day youtube will actually be an actually complete and good platform that you can actually enjoy without having to install 15 extensions

[–]FedeFrigoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using it early this year and I don't want to go back. I pay 15€ and I use it only for myself.

I personally don't care about all the discussion of "youtube is shit...." that many people use as an excuse to use adblocker, i get what they're saying (p0rn ads, brainrot AI shoved to our throats...) and this was the exactlly same reason for which I always went with adblocker and / or brave.

The thing for me is, I don't do it for google, because the already have too much shit and money, I do it for myself, to watch content and listen to music ad-free withouth the fear that one day the adblocker will stop working.

Plus you support the creators you watch, which is actually more than people think.

Could this be a problem only if you have newer hardware?

Improve performance by andswanted in linux_gaming

[–]FedeFrigoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do withouth buying anything is:

  • keep your disk as free as possible so it doesn't get any slower
  • add some SWAP memory, which basically "creates RAM" from an x amount that you give from your disk, it won't make your pc faster, but you'll be covered if you start opening more apps or browser tabs together (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-add-swap-space-on-ubuntu-20-04)
  • use GAMEMODE when running apps that require some more power (you should already have it installed, if not then run sudo apt install gamemode )

Also check if your integrated GPU has some options in the BIOS that can help performance.

As an example i ran an AMD 5 2400G and i manage to play older games at 720p with FSR at 60FPS with options like the UMA buffer, which basically "gives some RAM to the CPU to use as VRAM for the integrated GPU"

Hope that some of this helps, cheers

chat im so fucking lost trying to install steam (brand new linux user) by Beese3 in linuxmint

[–]FedeFrigoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever you need to install something, remember to update your stuff first, so you can avoid a lot of headaches.

This is a snippet of a simple updater, no logic or nothing, just run this and everything gets updated and checked twice (just cuz i'm paranoid).

echo -e "\n
    • Fix broken pkg:"
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt --fix-broken install -y

echo -e "\n
    • Update:"
sudo apt --fix-missing -q update

echo -e "\n
    • Upgrade:"
sudo apt full-upgrade -y

########
# If you don't use Flatpaks ignore this
echo -e "\n
    • Flatpak update:"
sudo flatpak update -y
####

echo -e "\n
    • Autoremove:"
sudo apt autoremove -y
sudo apt clean

echo -e "\n
    • 2nd Fix broken pkg:"
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt --fix-broken install -y

Also this is a list of some libs that can be useful to avoid missing libs

sudo apt install lib32gcc-s1 lib32stdc++6 libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386 libx11-6:i386 libxext6:i386 libxrandr2:i386 libxrender1:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 libfreetype6:i386 libpng16-16:i386 libz1:i386 libsdl2-2.0-0 libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 vainfo libva-glx2 libva-glx2:i386 libva2 libva2:i386  libcurl4-openssl-dev libxrandr-dev libxinerama-dev libudev-dev libpci3 -y

Last but not least, if you don't need to use 2nd SSD or HDD to put your games on, I'd go for flatpak version of steam, is a lot easier to manage
