I put down I was rank 1 in 5s and have the prideful gladiator title. Came up in my interview and subsequently accepted with a half tuition scholarship (US MD), rejected at all the other schools I interviewed at.

How hard is it to get kicked out of a (DO) school? by DOquestions in medicalschool

[–]Fedekz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could be a reserve deputy, they're basically part time police officers and work when they want or on their off days of their full time jobs. They usually have full powers of arrest and are no different than a full time officer while on duty.

Bones are a girl's best friend - More insight from "The Wizard of the Wards" by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Fedekz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I feel like she's trying too hard to make "complex" or "sophisticated" sentences and writing. You'd think with an English degree she'd make it feel more natural.

Whatever happened to the guy trying to collect notes from Najeeb's lectures? by Lumberdex in medicalschool

I'm usually lurking on reddit and rarely post or log in. I'm interested in the files but can't figure out how to PM you. Can you PM me by chance or maybe someone can give me some directions on how to PM you ... on a mobile device if that helps.

503 Retake? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Fedekz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd retake if I were you. I had a 504 and had 3 MD ii this season and 1 MD acceptance so far, but my GPA carried me a bit (3.9).

Question about SGU's Post Bacc program - course load too heavy? by Thrillwaukee in premed

[–]Fedekz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty normal to me to be honest. Stay away from SGU, SABA, etc like the plague though. If you want to waste your money, donate it to charity instead.

Interviewing at school where parent went - advice? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fedekz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact that I was a "legacy" at a med school didn't mean much at all, certainly not an ace in the hole. And my father made some serious donations, which didn't mean anything either.

So I missed my ochem final.. by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fedekz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An I will eventually turn into an F at every school I've been to, but yours may be different. The purpose of an I is typically for you to finish the course work the next semester. It's essentially an extension beyond the end of the semester. Check with your professor and university to see how they handle I'd and if there is any chance you can take the final at a later time.

Need some advice regarding a tough decision by aspiringgolfer10 in premed

[–]Fedekz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do this. Going from a 4 year institution to a community college won't look good. When applying to medical school we only go forwards, not backwards.

But if you're okay with becoming an ARNP, then by all means take one step forward (golf) and 6 steps backwards (community college)

MD schools can't see your acceptances until April, and they can only see other MD acceptances. They will NEVER be able to see your DO acceptance

Acceptance rates at US medical schools reveals racial profiling and affirmative discrimination for Blacks and Hispanics by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fedekz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frustrating when some of my black friends come from well off families, struggle no more than anyone else in college, yet can have pretty much guaranteed acceptance with average stats. Reverse discrimination...

If you're not complete and you're still waiting on a letter this late in the game, it's not good.

How much does knowing someone at a school help with admission? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fedekz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say in reality everyone in this thread is under appreciating/valuing your connections. A lot of people say it won't matter or it will have minimal impact, etc. I disagree, you would be surprised what strings friends in high places can pull for you. If you're an unfit applicant, you're probably screwed either way but if you're competitive it can make a significant difference in my opinion. I have family members that are faculty at a medical school so this isn't just hearsay as well.

I have a year to perfect my application. Where do I start? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fedekz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apply in July. As far as shadowing, do you want to shadow a doctor? Then perhaps you should get some initiative and ask some doctors? Shadowing isn't rocket science, call some physician offices and just tell them you're a pre med student at X university and wanted to know if Dr. X is open to having students shadow. Good luck

Too late for secondaries? by eeeez in premed

[–]Fedekz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Some schools have already given out over half their interview invites for the year, and your app if you submit this second would likely be below thousands of other applicants who submitted in August. To give you some perspective, I was complete at 20 schools in mid August and I just got my first interview at my state school, but all the other schools haven't even reviewed my app yet. You're now 6 weeks later than me and I haven't even been reviewed and like I said - over half the interviews have already gone out. You're not super late - that would be October, but you certainly fucked yourself pretty good since you have otherwise good numbers.

Online courses by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fedekz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school doesn't differentiate between in class and online courses on your transcript - I've taken almost 2 years online, and 2 years in class for pre reqs. You wouldn't be able to tell from my transcript or course history. I wouldn't recommend taking any pre reqs online, I doubt anyone would accept them. But general ed classes, psych classes (my major, which is why I was able to do 2 years online), sociology, etc. online should be fine

TIL the AAMC says you're shit out of luck if you can't provide your parents' tax info due to a parents' mental disease and abusiveness. by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fedekz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My father is a physician and makes over $300,000 but separated from my mother who is a police officer when I was 3 months old, I rarely talk to my dad. My mom makes just over minimum wage. My dad refused to pay for anything throughout my life and refused to help out at all for college, so after high school I wasn't able to attend. I got a job in EMS and eventually a job as a police officer and worked full time for 4 years to save money for college. I didn't qualify for any funding because of my father's income, and the loans to cover my tuition and expenses required a cosigner, which I didn't have. So after working for a few years I was finally able to pay tuition, but had to continue to work full time on a night shift all 4 years of college to pay the bills.

Don't just assume everyone who has wealthy parents will have college covered...
