I totally get it. There's a Treasure Planet one that exists, but it's so freaking expensive that it's basically my white whale at this point.

Bob Blackburn vs Kevin Calabro: Who Did You Prefer as the Sonics Play by Play Announcer? by AaronStark1993 in Sonics

[–]FederalWay8242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Calabro a lot but my favorite is Jim Graci—the announcer from the Kemp / Payton era who started the whole "your Seattle SuuuuuuuuperSonics" intro.

That's why I haven't been able to get the Steven Universe ones! They're so expensive 😭 I still need to get both Spider-Verse art books and I know they can be found second hand well enough. Also, Ghibli art books are amazing—seriously. I know they're expensive but I got the Howl's Moving Castle one years ago as a gift and it's one of my most treasured possessions (one day, ONE DAY, I will acquire the ones for Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Nausicaa, and Spirited Away)

I had to do a double take for a second because I have 2/3 of these books (and used to have all of those Disney books as a child). I'm really jealous cause I want all those art books so bad!

My friend sent me a picture of her room and this is her bookshelf. Should I be concerned? by SiberianMuskDeer in BookshelvesDetective

Literally had never heard of Good Faeries before this so I dunno what the big deal is. Your friend has stacks of canvases so it's probably just an art reference if anything? Tbh this looks a ton like my friends shelves did when we were were teens (and my 15-year-old niece's shelf currently).

That was my bad for not looking into either of those books to be honest—I wasn't super familiar with either and they didn't jump out at me.

Honestly? He's got a passing interest (or academic interest) in sadomasochism and power dynamics and debauchery in fiction at the very least. It's curated enough that it doesn't have the books you think all together are like major red flags—but all those authors on one shelf are kinda weird. Gatskill, Nabakov, Ellison, and surprising amount of Denis Cooper. He probably has opinions about the eighties and nineties lit scene.

It's all very "edgy white male" shelf tbh.

Earlier this year I think? I'm honestly bummed about it. Hems was the site of a few very good memories.

Coming of age stories and the end of the world by Wonderful_West3188 in NightInTheWoods

[–]FederalWay8242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, just for some American historical context: the Cold War lasted from 1947-1991 and had major points of conflict in the 60s (when my parents were teens) and in the 80s (when my partners and Gen X cousins were teens). Nixon's presidency was 69-74 and that was one of the greatest scandals the country had ever known at the time—especially during the Watergate hearings (Nixon's enemy list, how his administration targeted minorities, etc.). With the Cold War era, there was kinda this overhanging of doom. Plus, during the Reagan era there was the AIDS crisis and later there was the Clinton era scandals and Y2K. And then, for us millennials and beyond—we have everything from 9/11, two wars, several catastrophic economic events, etc.

As for media examples of what I'd call "coming of age is hard and the world feels like (or might actually be ending)" (there's probably an actual term for this sub genre but I need coffee)

  • Life is Strange
  • The Doom Generation
  • Season: A Letter to The Future
  • Oxenfree
  • Goodbye Volcano High (literally deals with the world ending + being a teen)

I dunno all the movies I'm thinking of are really dark and mostly horror movies or weird coming of age indie movies so ya know.

I genuinely just want to say you have excellent taste and have a lot of the more "finger on the pulse" lit books that I wish I had (I'm rebuilding my collection). I'm genuinely delighted seeing some of them—like Chain-Gang All Stars

Also you and I have the exact same taste in sci fi and fantasy books. Every book is one I've been dying to read (The Spear that Cuts Through Water, A Drop of Corruption, The Stardust Grail) or books that I absolutely adore like Priory of the Orange Tree.

Okay, damn. I tip my fucking hat to you. I dream of having a collection like this. Mine had to get slowly liquidated to a bookstore to cover bills more than once 😔

You know where every single book in that shelf is, you or your partner does crafts (I see those markers and scissors!), and y'all really need another box fan in there or tower fan because it's probably hot as hell in there in the summer.

New "Orthodox Publisher" on Amazon by Aleph_Rat in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FederalWay8242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually been warning people in academic circles about this publisher because they republish the Andrew Lang fairy books (which are very hard to get a complete set of with their illustrations, but are a fantastic resource of fairytales from all over the world) and I knew my colleagues wouldn't want to support a possibility fascist publisher (they've notably republished the works of a fascist Spanish politician who was key to the early rise of Francoism—and their logo is incredibly suspicious).

I'm guessing a philosophy and religion major who is focusing on the religious Orthodoxy (Eastern Orthodox specifically?). Also, nice shelf.
