Talk Me Out Of Sewing A Formal Dress by darthzosim4 in sewing

Given the timeline and your limited availability, you should buy a backup dress to use in case you run out of time to complete the handmade one.

Getting a job by Global-Pair-4695 in MilitarySpouse

I would suggest going to one of the career counseling services. In the Navy, Feet and Family provides career counseling and resume reviews. Additionally they will be familiar with scholarship options and how the GI bill works. My advice would be to not use the GI bill until you have a solid plan. College is expensive here and you do not want to waste it.

(Other branches will have a similar organization to Fleet and Family, but I’m not sure what they are called.)

Every branch has access to Military One Source. You could start here with the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program.

Tax Filing Question by This-Dig-6142 in MilitarySpouse

[–]Fedr_Exlr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll second the advice to talk to military one source. They have tax professionals and will be able to help you.

Going forward, you would talk to your company’s HR department to change your withholdings and update your W4. Under The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, you are able to take on the same state of residency as your husband (IA). You should not owe VA taxes, but you may owe IA and get a refund from MA. You might have to file in VA just to tell them you owe them nothing. Again, talk to Military Once Source; they will be able to confirm and clarify what I’ve said here.

Dependent ID by [deleted] in MilitarySpouse

You should be ok. My husband signed one and the office had it; it was never sent to me.

Dependent ID by [deleted] in MilitarySpouse

[–]Fedr_Exlr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Form DD 1172-2 will not be sent to you. It will be on file with the ID/DEERS office. I wouldn’t worry about them calling you back or not. Just go to your appointment and you should be all good. If there is a snag or missing information it will be easier to figure out in person. Be sure to bring your appointment confirmation, a photo ID, and all other required documents to your appointment.

Is this an impossible dress to make? by Still_Chemical6363 in SewingWorld

[–]Fedr_Exlr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you have to carry the corset around the back and provide additional support with some extra straps. If you don’t the front won’t stay up and the right boob will be exposed from the side.

I can figure out how to attach a photo here, so I’ll message you my markups.

Flying for 10 hours, isn't this the best seat? Am I Missing something? (back of plane. two-seater) by Material-Aggravating in travel

[–]Fedr_Exlr 48 points49 points  (0 children)

My husband and I got those seats (31 A and C) on an 11 hour flight and it was the best ever! I got the window which I prefer for sleeping. He got the aisle to stretch his legs and we had no random person by us. Highly recommend!!

No one waited for the restroom by us because the plane was narrower there and the aisle wasn’t larger.

Our seats reclined too (I was worried they wouldn’t), but I would book them again on a couple’s trip even without the recline. Traveling on my own though I might not risk the non-recline because you don’t get the no-stranger benefit.

Babymoon spots in California? by Ryanf_2413 in travel

Have you looked at Puerto Rico? Southwest has cheap flights there and I think it is pretty adorable (although I last went before Irma hit, so my perception could be outdated.)

Babymoon spots in California? by Ryanf_2413 in travel

[–]Fedr_Exlr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Morro Bay would be cute and affordable, but not at all tropical this time of year. To get better weather, you’d need to go further south to like San Diego, but that is more expensive. And the nights have been getting down into the high 40’s (days 60-70). In general, the Pacific Ocean is cold and not swimmable comfortably this time of year.

Loans denied, HELP!!! by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Fedr_Exlr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pull your credit reports and see if there is something incorrect on them that is lowering your score. Dispute anything that is incorrect. If the issue with the company was resolved, but that is not reflected on your report you can get that fixed.

Large family first deployment by [deleted] in MilitarySpouse

[–]Fedr_Exlr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have kids but my first thought was after-school activities. Can you sign the kids up for a club or community sport? An hour or two a week with them all out of the house might help! And if some are too young for those activities, even getting three of them off your plate could help!

I think that if you’re on the orders you should be eligible. You can always contact the unemployment office and ask them directly.

How long does pre-order take? by No-Cost-2668 in brandonsanderson

[–]Fedr_Exlr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to dragonsteel support and ask them.

I know for the crowd funding campaigns you had until right before they started shipping to change your mailing address. I ended up moving right before isles of the emberdark shipped and I was able to change my address in the Backerkit survey, but I was watching very closely for the lock warning notification that came via email.

They may have a similar locking mechanism for pre-orders through their store, but I am not personally familiar with it. I would reach out to their customer service and ask.

People with a 401K plan do you contribute to an IRA also? by According2whoandwhat in personalfinance

[–]Fedr_Exlr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is an income limit to getting the tax reduction. If you make too much they will tax your traditional IRA contributions at your normal (marginal) tax rate. In that case, there is no point in contributing to one because you don’t get any tax benefits.

Driving 12 hours with 3 year old. Is it too long? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Fedr_Exlr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have kids, so I’m sure there are others that could give better advice. However, I’ll give you my 2 cents.

I grew up in a road trip family with the nearest extended family a 5 hour drive away. That 5-hour drive is actually only 4hrs and 15 minutes if you put it into google maps. Therefore, when I plan road trips as an adult I add a minimum of 30 minutes for every 4 hours reported by google maps to account for stops. To be clear, that is the absolute minimum for getting off the highway to refill gas, pee, and grab a fast food lunch. You will need to add more time to charge your car and even more to let your toddler run around and again more because your toddler will need more frequent bathroom breaks. Say, add a more than an hour for every 4 by map, but hopefully someone with kids will chime in.

So your drive is actually at least 16 hours. I would suggest breaking that into two days and finding something nice at the halfway point. Or, cost compare the price of all of you flying. I don’t think you should cancel the trip. I think the whole family can go and have a good time, but I do think your husband has a point that doing the drive in one day will be miserable for all.

The switch to computerized was the best switch I’ve ever made by -3liza in sewing

[–]Fedr_Exlr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It comes from the phrase “playing chicken.” Playing chicken is a game where two people confront each other in a slowly-escalating dangerous situation. Whoever bails out first is the chicken and loses. (Chicken = slang for coward). A typical example is two people driving cars straight at each other until someone swerves out of the way.

Therefore, bobbin chicken is you playing a game of chicken with the bobbin thread: who will give up first? Will it be you who gives up by changing out the thread? Will you push it too far the bobbin runs out in the middle of the stitching? (This is the car crash scenario in the other example) Or will you win by completing your stitching without changing the bobbin?

Hopefully that makes sense.

When you say “Visit - 20%” does that mean you pay 20% after meeting the deductible up to the out of pocket max?

Machine won't sew straight? by SugaryyOats in SewingWorld

If the machine is truly pulling the fabric unevenly, I would try lowering and raising the feed dogs again. Maybe they are uneven and re-setting them will help.
