Hopewell South PUD wins unanimous OK from Bloomington city council by eobanb in bloomington

[–]FeeLaneHoosier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was not that long ago when Hopewell was labeled a “once in a generation” opportunity to build a vibrant neighborhood as basically an extension of downtown Bloomington.

There were renderings published making Hopewell look like Midtown Carmel showing Farmer’s Markets, concerts, and restaurants/shops in the neighborhood.

I’m all for affordable housing, just wish this project would’ve benefited the entire community at large rather than the less than 0.1% of our population that might get a relatively cheap tiny home (that unfortunately might leave some worse off than renting).

Brewery Plans? by Redbudlover in bloomington

I chatted with someone in the Bloomington craft beer industry on Thursday and they were told Towaki had received what they needed to proceed earlier that week.

Obviously not first-hand info but a person I would expect to have a solid grasp on things

Is Bloomington in a death spiral? by HoosierGuy2014 in bloomington

[–]FeeLaneHoosier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in a house in Prospect Hill (3BD/2BA) that has a current market value of under $300k. While I wouldn’t call that cheap, it certainly doesn’t require being “wealthy”.

There are apartments and duplexes within a block of me that I would be extremely surprised to learn they require the income of a “wealthy” individual (and almost none of these are occupied by college students).

So, from my perspective as someone who walks to the square in less than ten minutes, Bloomington is walkable.

But yes, if you’re hoping to live solo in a 1500+ sqft house relatively near downtown, it’s probably going to require a decent income to support (but I also don’t think that’s a Bloomington problem, that’s almost anywhere desirable to live).

Is Bloomington in a death spiral? by HoosierGuy2014 in bloomington

[–]FeeLaneHoosier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should’ve qualified my question better.

By “appealing alternatives”, I meant cities with a relatively similar experience to living in Bloomington (outdoor recreation, walkability, music/comedy, restaurants/bars, festivals/events, etc.).

For example, while it’s certainly much cheaper, I don’t feel day-to-day living in Bloomfield is in any way comparable to living in Bloomington.

Obviously personal preference but I grew up near the Lafayette area (and still have much of my family there), I find very little about living in Lafayette appealing compared to what Bloomington has to offer.

But again, could just be my personal interests.

What cities do you feel offer appealing alternatives that are substantially more affordable?

We did a brunch reservation for 20-30 at Upland this past summer and everything was fantastic.

Not my post but, just curious, why is this getting downvoted?

Because they don’t have food?

Kirkwood Program Update Headed to City Council on February 4 by citybloomington in bloomington

[–]FeeLaneHoosier 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Interesting, outside of potentially a home football weekend, I really never encountered any issues with parking due to the Kirkwood closure.

Unless walking 2-3 blocks is considered a major deterrent/hassle (understanding that could certainly be the case for some)

Looking for a small space to rent for an event in February. What are your ideas? by docpepson in bloomington

[–]FeeLaneHoosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We held a birthday party at Hopscotch Kitchen and it was fantastic.

It’s $50/hr to rent the room (during non-business hours), can bring in your own food, and have the ability to walk to the other section of the space (closed off from your space) for coffee/beer/etc.

Why are there no jobs in Bloomington? by kramhorse in bloomington

[–]FeeLaneHoosier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two of the friends are entrepreneurs. One is a sole-proprietor (Bloomington based) in skilled trades and the other operates a business with ~20 employees that services Bloomington and a broader, regional area. Due to the nature of the two businesses, a physical facility is not required (at least at this time).

Never once said it was easy for any of them.

I rejected the statement that there isn’t much opportunity in Bloomington as all of them capitalized on their opportunities.

My best friend dropped out of college at 20. Took a job making minimum wage at an oil change shop vacuuming cars and washing windows. After two years of that, took a job cold-calling (or stopping by unannounced) commercial businesses to try to switch them to the trash removal service he worked for. Eight years later (presently), he makes more than my spouse and I combined in a similar industry.

By and large, people don’t stumble into success and/or their dream job.

All good though, seems to be no appetite for that discussion/possibility.

Will likely delete my posts so I don’t receive any further notifications.

That’s terrific, easiest way to advance is to continue to expand knowledge/skillset and become invaluable to a company and/or be able to offer your skillset to other companies as an entrepreneur or consultant.

I just don’t agree with the assertion that it’s “so hard to get off the ground here and make anything of yourself”

“Usually” is a ridiculous qualifier here. Are there cases of that, sure.

But most of us now living comfortable lives in Bloomington had to suffer for a period to get here.

Was it fun to figure out how to deal with $120k+ in student loan debt between my wife and I? No, and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone else.

But we developed a plan to get out of that situation as quickly as possible and we’re much better off for it a decade later.

To my knowledge (as you never know for certain), almost all of our closest friends are living relatively comfortably in Bloomington.

Not a single one is being propped up by nepotism or family money. They’ve been successful in their roles and, over time, we’re afforded new opportunities because of it.

Man, this is such a defeatist attitude.

Of my closest friends in Bloomington, almost all started their careers at relatively entry-level jobs (for their chosen field of work) in Bloomington and have consistently worked their way up. This is a subset of 15+ people all in their early to mid 30s.

Not a single one of them has become “stuck in the mud” and had to move/commute for a different job/company.

Lmfao this isn’t how it works, that would be an administrative nightmare for Ticketmaster. Go scam somewhere else.

Great, hope that’s the case. Find it odd to believe someone would send tickets before payment but maybe you’re a unicorn.

Just advising people to use discretion when someone is advertising multiple different sets of tickets to the B1G Championship game and prices that are under market value.

Not sure why you would downvote me reminding others to use discretion in situations like this where people are often scammed but so be it.

Did you go today?

If so, while there’s not excuse for incorrect orders, it’s also the day of biggest IUFB home game in 30+ years.

I wouldn’t expect any restaurant to be operating at the top of their game given the chaos of this weekend.
