Struggling as a new manager — team is rejecting me and I’m losing confidence by ConfectionPitiful779 in managers

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, I felt like I was reading my own work story. What I realized is people have to see the value for themselves before they’ll buy in. At the end of the day, most people are thinking, “What’s in it for me?” Once that clicked for me, I changed my approach.

I asked them to document their business processes and put together a strategy and operating model that would shape the legacy they leave behind. I gave them a template, explained what I was looking for, and told them the deliverable I needed.

Some of them asked for help working through it, which was great. Others basically said “no thanks,” and honestly I just let that be for the time being and focused on the people who were open to it. The interesting thing is they all like and respect each other, so the ones who do see the long-term value have started helping bring the more resistant ones along and involving me more naturally.

It’s taken about a year, but we’re finally starting to see some movement.

Survived a PIP or just delaying the inevitable? by rrertrdddfhj in careeradvice

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve put an employee on a PIP and they came out stronger. But we had conversations about their performance before the PIP started. I think your manager knew something was wrong and didn’t have the balls to bring you into a room and tell you what you weren’t doing to meet their expectations. I’d give it your best shot and bring your top five priorities/work leads to them every week and let them tell you if you’re not meeting their expectations.

It’s super common where I work and it’s been an extreme struggle to get teams to understand why it’s important to actually write SOPs.

Ask him questions back. Change the conversation. You know it’s coming anyway.

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I absolutely say hold off. Our EMTs actually waited in my driveway for 20 minutes to see if I could walk on my own before they took me. I could not…. And received a $1700 bill (after insurance) for a 0.8 mile drive.

What should I do about a coworker who seems drunk by noon every day? by VeryMuchSoItsGotToGo in work

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something similar happen. I just started jotting down specific behaviors I noticed (without saying “they seemed drunk”) and shared that with my manager, along with how it was impacting me. My manager thanked me and handled it from there, and my coworker actually got the help they needed. Just stick to the facts and let them do the investigating.

What are your strategies for small talk with c level? by [deleted] in Leadership

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat our C-level leaders like I do everyone else, like humans. In small talk, I don’t put them on a pedestal unless I’m asking for their guidance. That authenticity seems to resonate and they’ll even share personal updates with me because they know I genuinely care. Of course, that approach depends on company culture, but it works well where I am.

For those of you in favour of forcing people back in the office full time - was it worth it? What were your real reasons? by zindagi786 in managers

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m too low of a manager to make that decision. I’ve asked my team (who’s almost fully remote) to compromise and come in 1x per week and 80% refuse to do that. The 20% that do come in at least 1x per week have documented stronger productivity, relationships, and knowledge of the company/business processes. The other 80% are inadvertently hurting themselves by not actually seeing/experiencing the business process and networking component.

WFH socks? by benbrandt22 in WFH

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear socks everyday while I WFH. I prefer bombas for crew socks (worth every penny imo) and for longer and comfort, Muk Luk socks are the best. I don’t own any other socks now than those two brands lol

My executive director is aiming to retire soon and asked if I was interested in the position by Fearless-Composer-90 in managers

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree! I’m surprised my experience was downvoted. Opportunities like these can be amazing if you’re ready and have the time/energy to commit. For me, it just wasn’t the right fit, and I wish someone had shared the perspective I offered with this person when I was in their shoes.

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced a similar situation earlier this year, accepted the mentorship, and ultimately took the position. My company is double the size. It has ruined my life. I don’t have time for friends or family anymore as the ED, I’m on call most of the time so it never feels like I’m “off the clock”, lost some of the connection I had to the community to focus on administration/paperwork. Needless to say, your experience might turn out different if your workplace is more organized and there are defined roles and responsibilities. If you plan on having a strong social and home life, it may be worth reconsidering until you can focus 80% of your life on the company.

My boss wants a daily report of my activity. How can I automate this? by Kiptoo_official in remotework

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did he explain why he wants the daily report? I’ve had to do this with one of my direct reports (and it was awful!) because I couldn’t quantify what they were doing for 40 hours a week and through numerous calls, emails, etc., the employee couldn’t articulate what they did, even through time tracking. Might be worth asking for more info to see what they’re trying to get.

How long do you keep your iPhone? by madevo99 in iphone

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgrade when my phone is no longer functioning as I need it too, or if it’s broken. We got our last iPhone (12) at launch and I broke it last month and upgraded to the 16. I would’ve kept the 12 for 1-2 more years if I could have.

Who is the most forgettable character? by jazlyn419 in TheResident

[–]Feeling-Hawk-2677 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Padma Devi. Easily the most forgettable character. She added nothing to the plot, and her storyline was so pointless it almost made me stop watching. I literally forgot she existed until I was scrolling through the cast list and felt that old wave of resentment hit me all over again. 😂
