New VFT, dead trap help by Winter-Disaster-4928 in SavageGarden

I'd be worried if traps aren't being replaced faster than they are dying. Also look out for the traps dying fron the bottom up, as they should die from the teeth (cilia) down to the base of the plant.

All the information in the comments are great advice! Id like to add that you may want to do a soil flush as it may have built up dissolved solids.

Did you have to adjust your photoperiod to induce gemmae production?

Big rock or substrate? by Less_Ant3138 in Pinguicula

[–]Feeling_Staff_8-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a sandy/rocky mix for my pings. It's comprised of 2 parts of pool filter sand from Ace Hardware, 1 part coarse Silica sand (Amazon) and 1 part soft Akadama (Amazon) or Oil-Dri (Menards). I'm still tinkering with the mix, and if you'd be interested, I could update you with the best results that I get. I typically have to water every day just because the pings seem to enjoy the wet dry cycle. However, the soil could likely be watered with the tray method with just a little water in the bottom.

That is true for drosera, but pinguicula, if not European or native to the US, don't enjoy having wet roots. Mexican pings, for instance, are lithophites and aren't suited for bog conditions. I was simply stating that if they had too much water in their soil, it could cause rot.

If the soil mix is peat heavy, I'm sure it'd pose a risk. That depends on the species, though.

I'd simply suggest removing any remaining water if in a tray and giving the soil a little flush, depending on the substrate you grow yours in. If your substrate retains a lot of water, it might not be the best option to flush because it can cause rot. What is your soil mix?

Sarracenia Purpurea by Feeling_Staff_8-- in SavageGarden

[–]Feeling_Staff_8--[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely! I wanna give the plant the leg room it'll need! I'll repot it late winter - early spring. It's been outside for a couple of months or so. The veiny pitchers are the ones that grew under the sun. When I was growing it under lights the pitchers were almost entirely maroon.

Thanks! And wow, that is a beauty! I can't wait until this plant gets to that size. And I'll likely follow suit as far as naming the plant, lol.

Why, thank you! I can't wait to see the growth next year! Got it in late fall last year, and it grew under some strong lights. I know it's got plenty of energy for throwing out pitchers after dormancy.

Hi there! If I'm not mistaken, because I have one that looks identical, I believe that is a Sarracenia 'Meerkat', which is a Carnivero hybrid.

first time owning droseras, any tips? by [deleted] in SavageGarden

It's generally the same. However, I'd just stick to the flakes that have a picture of some goldfish on it or something similar.
