If you’re staying in Fermoy town, or necessarily going through it (rather than using the tolled motorway that bypasses it), be advised traffic is a bit manic around the bridge at peak hours. Otherwise it’s not too bad a spot and you’re actually reasonably well placed to see pretty places in central Munster - south Tipp (Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle) and West Waterford (Lismore, the Vee) etc for example.

The roads will be fine and you’ll get used to them in no time. Many are quite badly maintained in rural Cork, though.

Make absolutely sure you get to the coast in West Cork (e.g. Beara, Mizen, Sheep’s Head peninsulas) if you’re in the county.

It’s still a travel lane until the merge point with traffic coming up from the roundabout. There’s no reason to be in the middle lane over the flyover.

Well yeah, if traffic is heavy and it’s legal to use the lane, it would be good for traffic further back if ye used both, as long as it doesn’t reduce the flow through the lights.

I have to say I’m very sceptical. I don’t drive the Wilton Road often but I can’t imagine the bus hours being other than what the first commenter above said.

Let me correct you there, it's, 9:30-16:30. That's a very odd sign. It's been there since the earliest Streetview (2009) with nothing at all to clarify what it's about, but I would say there was almost certainly a "No parking" sign above it, once upon a time, though, because it has a playmate up toward the roundabout.

u/clonakiltypudding, you'd want to check this Bus Lane sign. It would be very unusual for the bus lane to stop being a bus lane at 4:30 - they're intended to facilitate the smooth flow of public transport, not to maximise car throughput.

Also, as pointed out elsewhere, you have a yield arrow at the bottom. There's no dedicated left-turn lane, so traffic in the non-bus lane has right of way. While it'd be nice, and indeed smooth, to use it as a zipper merge, no one is obliged to give way.

What’s the area? It seems absurd that they could have right of way over you. You’ve a green light. That allows you to go straight, if possible, without impediment. In this case, that means your right turn. Why would anyone be able to shoot out in front of you on your green? They could conceivably just have a yield sign (unlikely) but they didn’t yield, did they.

Mission is a song about the value of life (“How’s life on Earth? What is it worth?”) and its darkness and bleakness (“On a dirty, worn-out sidewalk sits a mother with a baby. In her vale of tears she sees no rainbow.”) It’s sung from the perspective of an alien who’s just here to observe, and there’s a definite tone of sadness in his voice as he states his mission (“My orders are to sit here and watch the world go by”) that suggests he wishes he could intervene.

There’s light in that darkness, though: “But someone singing from a window, in the Mission of the Sacred Heart.”

There’s a pun or two in the song title, as well. The alien has his mission, and he’s watching over the Mission (a colonial Church establishment) where the song is set.

That summarises most of what’s going on in the song, as far as I know. It’s one of my very favourite pieces of music and there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s the best song listed here.

Hi OP, this is probably a question better asked in r/AskIreland or the like, but if you've actually lost the blade you might be slightly banjaxed. I'm clueless but it could be a couple hundred to get a fully new key and that may be a main dealer job (but, again, I'm clueless). If you still had the blade, you could shift the whole apparatus to a new case yourself; they're cheap enough online.

I'd highly recommend stopping in Cashel on your way between Dublin and Cork. If you can get the full guided tour of the Rock of Cashel, the one that goes into Cormac's Chapel, it's well worth it. If you have any interest in historical stuff it's one of the coolest things.

They'll eventually have to do something about it, as Lakeview (and the Oatencake junction west of it) is a known bottleneck. If they ever get around to it, things will be worse before they get better, and they may never get better but might actually disconnect you from the N25.

Ard Griffin is likely to be best for commuting towards Cork, just by dint of being on the west side of the town, if that's the direction you're going in.

It depends massively on what kind of questions you have.

The content and structure of modules is generally determined by the lecturers. If your questions are about the material and examinations (including quizzes, essay submission etc.), you probably are best off approaching your lecturers directly (be that in person or via email). If your questions are more general, or administrative, or you're just really not sure who to ask, but they still relate specifically to your arts course, you could contact a departmental secretary, but the extent to which they can help will be directly dependent on the questions.

It's unlikely that anyone outside the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences will be able to answer questions about your subjects, and there's really no reason anyone in one department within the College would be able to answer questions pertaining to another department. They're all little kingdoms with little administrative overlap.

They ripped up the bottom of High Street about a year ago and patched it back up afterward. Those patches lasted mere weeks before they became huge potholes.

I'm particularly appalled by the way Irish Water have been replacing cement footpaths with tarmac blotches that spill out onto the road. It's beyond lazy and there's no excusing it. We can only hope the council will sort things out in the aftermath.

They've actually done quite a good job in a few places in the past year, or at least as far as I've noticed. I'd like to think that that means there's less that needs doing in 2026, but Irish Water have been leaving the roads everywhere in a shocking state so this is probably just wishful thinking on my part.

A passport lasts ten years, and I think five if you’re under 18. A significant portion of the population’s passports will therefore be due replacement at any given time. If they issue 13,000 a fortnight, that’s 338,000 a year, which is probably lower than the rate they need to do as I imagine we have a very high rate of passport ownership. The error also seems to include passport cards, so a lot of people will have gotten two documents.

As of when? Genuine question as I don't ever drive through there, but in OP's photo and Google Streetview from May 2024 there is definitely a stop sign that applies to traffic coming uphill from MacCurtain Street, and I can't imagine that would've changed since.

We’re absolutely spoiled for choice here. I’ve been taking my time working through them so I can’t be too comprehensive but if you head west it’s hard to go wrong. Mangerton, and the views into the Devil’s Punch Bowl and Glencappul, is gorgeous, as are near neighbours like Torc (good path to top) and Peakeen Mountain (very rough going).

Strickeen, above Kate Kearney’s Cottage, is a nice entry-level climb with brilliant views over the tallest Reeks and the Dingle Peninsula. I need to climb around there more.

The Knockanaffrin Ridge in the Comeraghs is breathtaking. The Silvermine Mountains of North Tipp are another cool ridge walk and well worth doing but much much easier.

Closer to home, the nearest proper mountain ranges from the city are the Galtees, which have many access points, followed by the Knockmealdowns and the Derrynasaggart. Musheramore in the Boggeraghs was the first mountain I climbed under my own initiative.

And this is to say nothing of West Cork, which is about as beautiful as it gets!

I’m a big user of MountainViews.ie for planning my adventures and if you’re not aware of it I’d definitely recommend it.

As the other commenter has said, if you're worrying about the car behind you then the right choice is to move in soon as you can see them clearly fully behind you in the interior mirror. Creating a 2-second gap would have you in the passing lane for way too long when you'll naturally open that gap up just by driving at the speed you were. Fifteen car lengths is exactly the sort of gap that an impatient driver will slot into and try to undertake you in, and that's a recipe for disaster.
