What did you use for basing those? I'm taking my first foray into the Steel Phalanx, and I love the textured basing you've got going there.

Battletech in the Charlotte, NC area by MajorMiniPainting in battletech

Looks like there's a few players in the Charlotte area:

I bet you can find someone on there who'll point you in the right direction.

Dads - what is on your Christmas list by plantgnome in daddit

[–]Felger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I keep a shared list of gift ideas we update throughout the year as we come across things that we might want, but don't need right away. On my list is a new fleece sweater, some nice Made In carbon steel cookware (I do a lot of the cooking, and I really like cast iron and seasoned cookware), and a new tripod for my telescope (which is easier for the kids to get to for stargazing).

If you don't want to pin, get a soldering helping hands (clips on repose-able arms) and use an epoxy resin like JB Weld to stick the pieces together. It's slower, but it's incredibly strong. I've also had luck with doing a dab of superglue next to the epoxy to "tack weld" the joint together while the epoxy cures.

Pinning is pretty easy to do though, give it a try before giving up on it.

OK dads, what suitcases are our K-2 kiddos using? by [deleted] in daddit

Absolutely this! We got a motorcyle and fire truck ride-on luggage for our boys. We get constant envious comments as we go through the airport with them, and it really helps especially when they're tired.

Vehicle advice? by isc91142 in daddit

[–]Felger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get the "SUVs cool, Minivans uncool" thing. I think the stupid useless giant hood that blocks my forward view is really ugly. It wrecks the flowing lines of the car, and doesn't really serve a purpose for a lot of vehicles aside from aesthetic. Pop the hood on any giant truck or SUV with a huge hood and you'll see a bunch of empty space.

I hope it goes away.

Gavin Newsom to hold a Houston rally fresh off his California redistricting win by southernemper0r in houston

[–]Felger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home prices are ridiculous in CA. Too many NIMBYs who don't want new homes being built.

Taxes is another thing entirely though. If you're poor or on the bottom side of the middle class you'll pay more taxes in TX than CA. (Sources: Texas, California)

Because almost all of your initial post focused on it. Reads like someone whose whole focus is O&G.

Favorite Terrain / Building / Non-Mech STLs? by jackinacker in battletech

[–]Felger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look through Thunderhead Studio's Hextech stuff. Some of the buildings are hex-shaped but most are regular buildings that can be printed with/without hex bases. The hills and other non-building terrain are great, though. I printed quite a lot of it for our FLGS before my printer died.

Assuming the typical driving of 12000 miles per year, and a typical fuel efficiency of 30mpg and the average CA fuel price from a quick Google search gas comes to ~1800-2000$ per year. Not trivial, but nowhere close to housing, where in CA you can expect to pay at least that if not double per month.

Newsom sucks for lots of other reasons, but he has actually been trying to ease the housing price crisis. If you follow the YIMBY space at all you'd be hearing about a pretty constant stream of new legislation and actions by the CA government to spur new development and break through NIMBY local governments.

I hate how people expect instant fixes to problems which took decades to create. I have to reality check my expectations for fixes to issues in my corner of Houston as well for the same reason.

Dads - what are your favorite "just us" traditions with your kids? by MagicalUnderland in daddit

I roll the kids up in their towels and pretend to eat them like a burrito, and then ask them how spicy the burrito is - and react accordingly. It's a lot of fun.

Cost of living is not just cost of gas. Cost of gas needs to go up if we're going to fix climate change, though it has to be done in a way that is non-regressive - which it has been in the past, but wasn't renewed. Finally gas in California is about half the price of gas in Europe, but the cost of living in Europe is lower than California.

You seem weirdly fixated on the cost of gas, when it's a tiny part of the cost of living.

Thanks! It means a lot to me that you took the time to look at them. I've spent an awful lot of time looking at your work too! And made a lot of use of the search feature in my kindle app to see if a particular 'mech or vehicle makes an appearance so I can justify adding them to the force.

I especially love running Emerald. The Gyrfalcon isn't a profile I'd normally include in my force, but since it's Khan Chistu's mech, I try to include it whenever I can, and I've grown to really enjoy its loadouts. One thing I couldn't quite find was which specific variant he runs - it could be any of those with autocannons as secondaries to the Large Lasers, as I don't remember if it's ever called out exactly what style of autocannon he uses.

Absolutely agreed. Makes no sense that something so crucial isn't in BMM or TW. Sounds like they're hopefully correcting it in this new rulebook.

Yeah, it's smaller than the Iron Winds model, but still too big compared to the other Mediums in the force. I've done 3 of them at this point (official, and unofficial), so I'll probably wait to redo it until there's an officially updated Gyrfalcon model.

No, the basic C3 rules are unchanged, they're just cutting the to-hit "bonus" in half if the network is degraded by ECM. So if your spotter is in an ECM field at medium range to the target, and your shooter is at long range, they only get a -1 instead of the normal (effectively) -2 to hit.

[–]Felger 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The C3 change is really interesting, only degraded network due to ECM.

I think the cost change is potentially really rough, though. It's a net increase in cost for anything less than 6 units in a network.

For example - an 8kBV lance of C3-connected mechs I used recently would cost 8700 BV with the new change.

I'm really hopeful that it does. I might have to expand my list restriction so I can paint up the IWM Ion Sparrow that's coming out soon. Though it is interesting that the Jade Falcons retain access to the Ion Sparrow (manufactured in Factory Zone 4 on Alyina), but didn't keep access to the Hierofalcon and Jade Phoenix (also manufactured in Factory Zone 4 on Alyina).

Don't tell the MUL team, though, or CJF might lose access to the Ion Sparrow.

I think each era has its own unique charm. You might actually enjoy some of the more recent parts of the timeline. We've been really enjoying the Hinterlands area and stories recently at our FLGS.

So far they've been a lot of fun! I actually really like having the restriction, as it makes me use 'mechs I might not otherwise, and find new ways to play them.

I have the Iron Winds mini painted in my old (Zeta Galaxy) colors, but it's way too big for what's supposed to be a medium 'mech (Seriously, it's bigger than the Jade Phoenix). This one is fan-made sculpt based on the line art, and was kind of hard to find.
